  biography.

Frida Kahlo was a famous Mexican painter. She was born in
Mexico City in 1907, and she began painting when she was 19 years
old. She grew up in the tree-lined streets of Coyoacan. Her father was
Hungarian-Jewish, and her mother was Mexican. She had four sisters.
She had a very difficult life. When she was young, she had
polio. Then she had a serious bus accident when she was in high
school, and she almost died. She spent over a year in bed. She broke
her back, collarbone, ribs, and pelvis and had to have over thirty
operations. Although she lived, she was in constant pain for the rest of
her life, and she died from complications from this accident when she
was 47.
While the young Frida was in bed recovering from the
accident, she began painting. She painted a lot about her life and the
world around her. When she was 21, she met the famous muralist Diego
Rivera and fell in love. He was twenty years older than her, but she
adored him, and they were married in 1929. They lived in Mexico, the
United States, and France. Throughout her life, Frida continued painting.
She had her first solo exhibition in New York City in 1938. She was very
famous in the 1940s, but she became even more popular in the 1980s.
Since then her paintings have been seen all over the world, and many
books and plays have been written about her life. The Mexican actress
Salma Hayek starred in her movie biography.
