REGULAR VERBS
• We form the past
  simple of regular   e.g. Yesterday I worked in the evening.

  verbs by adding
  the suffix –ed to
  the infinitive.
The Spelling rules
             for the past:
• Inf. + -ed:
      e.g. want- wanted
            like-liked
            play-played
• Inf. ending –e + -d
      e.g. arrive-arrived
           hate-hated
           love-loved
• Inf ending consonant + -y: -ied
       e.g. try-tried
• One- syllable verbs (CVC): double the cons. + -ed
         e.g. plan-planned
           stop-stopped
USES
 Actions that started and finished in the past

     e.g.I didn't go to the beach last Sunday


 Actions that happened one after the other in
  the past (like in a story)

     e.g.I went into the disco and I saw my
  favourite girl, then I asked her to dance,.........
The pronunciation of
    the Past of Regular Verbs
• /t/  when the infinitive ends in a VOICELESS Consonant ( /p/,
  /k/,/ks/, /s/ , /f/, /h/, /Í/, /S/ ).
         e.g. liked /laikt/
              watched /wQÍt/
              stopped /stQpt/
• /d/ when the infinitive ends in a VOICED  Consonant (/ b/,/g/,
  / l/ , /m/, / n /, /r /– /v/ , / w /, /y /, /z /) or in a Vowel
  sound.
          e.g. played /’pleId/
               loved /lVvd/
               answered /´ & ns@/
• /Id/ when the infinitive ends in /t/ or /d/
          e.g. wanted /´wQntId/
            decided /dI´ saIdId/
               hated /´ heItId/

                      form of the verbs in brackets.
• Shakira is perhaps the most recognizable voice in Latin pop/rock today.

  and national talent contests. By 13, she had signed a record deal with Sony

  She was chosen to represent her country at the Festival OTI in Spain. But
  she was under the minimum age of 16 and she ------(CAN NOT)

  • 2. REGULAR VERBS • We form the past simple of regular e.g. Yesterday I worked in the evening. verbs by adding the suffix –ed to the infinitive.
