This document discusses scatter radiation in x-rays. Scatter radiation is radiation that is deflected from its original path during an x-ray, reducing image contrast. It is produced via interactions between x-ray photons and matter, including Compton scattering and coherent scattering. While scatter radiation carries no useful information for forming an image, it is important because it determines contrast resolution and is considered unwanted radiation due to safety and contrast reduction effects. However, its impact on image unsharpness is considered negligible in practical radiographs.

When photon beam interacts with
matter some of its part get absorbed ,
some get deflected to a new direction
and rest of its part is transmitted to
produce radio graphic image .
The part which is deflected from its
original path to a new direction is simply
know as scatter radiation .

Contrast resolution is determined by scatter
radiation
Text book on radiography consider the scatter
radiation as unwanted due to radiation safety
issues & effects of contrast reduction while
carrying no information
Additional it is stated that in practical
image unsharpness is given by inherent &
geometrical unsharpness only due to effects of
scatter radiation is negligible .

8. If you could image a long bone in cross section
area using only transmitted X-RAY the image will
be very sharp the change in od from dark to light
corresponding to the bone-soft tissue interface ,
would be very abrupt therefore image contrast
will be high
On other hand if radiograph were
taken with only scatter radiation & no
transmitted X-RAYS the radio graphics contrast
will be very low
Generally , image forming
x-rays contains both transmitted and scatter X-
RAY the image would have moderate contrast
