Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a hereditary disorder caused by a mutation in the HBB gene, resulting in crescent-shaped red blood cells that obstruct blood flow and lead to various complications. The prevalence of SCA in Kerala is lower compared to other states in India, with higher rates among certain tribal populations, and recent efforts have focused on awareness, screening, and medical care. The Indian government supports management and prevention initiatives, particularly in regions with high prevalence, through health missions and dedicated research institutes.
