Oggi la convergenza delle reti si sta facendo via via sempre più spinta: reti dati che trasportano anche l’alimentazione e consentono di ridurre i cablaggi, reti industriali accessibili via web e che dal web traggono informazioni per il funzionamento dei dispositivi, reti nate per il mondo ‘office’ o aziendale che si ‘trasformano’ per ‘scendere’ in campo e, doverosamente ‘modificate’ e irrobustite, vengono utilizzare anche dall’industria. Con l’avvento di concetti quali Industry 4.0 e lo svilupparsi dell’idea della ‘fabbrica interconnessa’, poi, era inevitabile che il fenomeno della convergenza si acuisse ancora di più. Con tutte le problematiche e criticità che esso comporta, da quelle legate alla sicurezza dei dati e alla privacy, alla necessità di dotarsi di soluzioni in grado di resistere alle difficili condizioni ambientali del mondo manifatturiero. Centrali poi si stanno rivelando i problemi legati alla standardizzazione dei protocolli e all’interoperabilità delle soluzioni impiegate, perché, per poter scambiare informazioni e costruire applicazioni ‘intelligenti’ sulla base dei dati raccolti, occorre che i diversi dispositivi in gioco ‘parlino’ la stessa lingua e possano quindi ‘comprendersi’. Cosa a oggi non scontata e alla quale gli organismi regolatori dovranno dare al più presto una risposta… Abbiamo cercato di capire con i maggiori vendor del settore dove ci porterà questo trend. Già ora vediamo affacciarsi sul mercato industriale nuovi player e soggetti il cui business era prima focalizzato su ambiti affini ma separati. Gli operatori Telecom, per esempio, cominciano a vedere nel mondo industriale un interessante ambito di sviluppo per le applicazioni che si basano sulle reti. Dall’m2m all’Internet of Things le reti di telecomunicazione potranno giocare un ruolo importante e le Telco intendono sfruttare a pieno questo business proponendo anche soluzioni proprie. È un mercato ancora tutto da costruire, dove mandano applicazioni e dove c’è spazio un po’ per tutti i soggetti per crescere. Vediamo dunque quali sono le impressioni raccolte da Fieldbus&Networks e quali le esperienze maturate in questo ambito.

TOP-IX is an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) based in Turin, Italy that is evaluating whether it should continue operating solely as an IXP or expand into new business areas. It has faced challenges in recent years as major carriers have left and revenues have declined. TOP-IX is considering reducing prices, offering new services like remote colocation, and operating more like a startup to attract new members and businesses. The organization is seeking feedback on its strategic options going forward.
This document discusses Telecom Italia's decision to depeer from Italian internet exchanges in June 2013. It led to negative impacts like slower new affiliations to exchanges, traffic decreases, and increased eavesdropping risks. In response, Italian internet exchanges aim to strengthen collaboration, attract new content providers, and raise awareness of the issue to prevent other large networks from adopting similar depeering approaches. The exchanges seek to take further actions to address the challenges created by Telecom Italia's move.
I. TOP-IX is a nonprofit internet exchange point (IXP) in Italy that has evolved since 2002 from a small local exchange to a larger regional and national operator.
II. The document discusses the potential role for IXPs to evolve into "InterCloud Exchanges" (ICXs) that allow for similar peering and interconnection between cloud providers as currently exists between networks at IXPs.
III. Some initial examples and challenges of creating an ICX are presented, including pooling resources across cloud providers through a trusted infrastructure and ensuring flexibility, neutrality, interoperability and SLA management as cloud systems integrate.
