1. NARENDRA MODI
Narendra Modi was born in a small town in Mehsana district of North Gujarat in September,
1950. His father’s name is Damodardas Mulchand Modi and his mother’s name is Heeraben. He
was the third of six children born to them. At present, he is the Chief Minister of Gujarat and
Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP in Lok Sabha polls 2014.
Education
He did his schooling from Vadnagar and was described as an average student but a keen debater
by his teachers. He completed his master’s degree in political science from Gujarat University.
Profession
• He ran a tea stall as a teenager along with his brother. Later, he worked in the staff canteen of
Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation till 1970.
• In 1970, he became the full time pracharak (Campaigner) of the RSS.
• During emergency era, he was in charge of ABVP (Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad) in Gujarat.
• Modi had joined BJP in 1985.
• He gained prominence during Murli Manohar Joshi’s Ekta Yatra (Journey for Unity).
• In 1988, Modi was elected as General Secretary of BJP's Gujarat unit.
• In 1998, Modi was promoted to the post of National Secretary of the BJP.
• On 7 October 2001, Modi was appointed the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
• Godhra riots took place on 27 February 2002 during the tenure of Narendra Modi.
• Following Godhra violence, demand for Narendra Modi’s resignation grew which led to his
resignation from the post. BJP led by Narendra Modi won the subsequent Gujarat assembly
elections with the margin of 127 seats in the 182-member Gujarat assembly house.
• 2002-2007, during his second tenure, Narendra Modi changed his focus from Hindutva to
Gujarat’s economic development. The financial and technology parks were started in the state.
• In July 2007, Modi made a record of the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat. The BJP won
122 of the 182 seats in the 2007 Gujarat state assembly election and Narendra Modi continued
as chief minister.
• In the 2012 Gujarat legislative assembly elections, BJP again came to the power in Gujarat
2. assembly polls with Narendra Modi as the chief minister.
• In March 2013, Modi was appointed to the party's highest decision-making body, the BJP
Parliamentary Board. He was also chosen as the chairman of the party's Central Election
Campaign Committee.
• In September 2013, BJP announced Modi as its Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok
Sabha polls.
Honours and awards
• Modi was the Asian Winner of the fDi Personality of the Year Award for 2009 by fDi magazine.
• Gujarat Ratna by Shri Poona Gujarati Bandhu Samaj at Ganesh Kala Krida Manch.
• Computer Society of India awarded him with e-Ratna award.
• Narendra Modi was declared the Best Chief Minister in the country in a nationwide survey
conducted in 2006 by India Today magazine.
• In March 2012, Modi appeared on the cover of the Asian edition of Time.
• CSI award for e-Governance, UN Sasakawa Award for disaster reduction, Commonwealth
Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM) award for innovations in
governance, UNESCO award.

Narendra Modi has authored the books called Convenient Action: Gujarat’s Response to
Challenges of Climate Change and Saakshibhaav.
Narendra Modi: The Man, The Times is a book written on Narendra Modi.
Contribution
He planned the Panchamrut Yojana which is a five-pronged strategy for an integrated
development of Gujarat. He is credited with the campaign called the Vibrant Gujarat that
succeeded in transforming Gujarat into one of the most preferred investment destinations. The
2013 Vibrant Gujarat Summit attracted participation from over 120 countries of the world.
Current news
Narendra Modi is contesting election from Varanasi and Vadodara as the Prime Ministerial
candidate of BJP.
