For-profit colleges attract non-traditional students by offering specialized two-year programs to get students into the workforce quickly. However, some for-profit colleges like ITT Tech mislead students about job placement rates and offered expensive private loans above 16% interest. The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) is supposed to provide oversight but approved ITT Tech even though it had a below 60% job placement rate required. Questions remain about what the Department of Education is doing to regulate ACICS and whether for-profit colleges ethically target low-income students and should be required to repay students who don't find jobs as promised.
