Bhopal Disaster
ASSIGNMENT 1 TITLE:BHOPAL DISASTER DATE: 30 NOVEMBER 2009 1. Abstract The
night of 3rd December marked an industrial disaster when more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate
gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India that instantly led to the death of approximately
3,800 people and causing permanent injuries for thousands more. The company involved
shamelessly tried to avoid its legal responsibility. Nonetheless, a sum of $470 million was paid as
compensation, a considerably small amount in comparison to the impact from the consequences of
this tragedy. The aftermath of the disaster indicated the need for international standards for
environmental safety and preventive strategies to sustain from similar accidents. India has... Show

Furthermore, the location of the plant being situated nearby a large lake guaranteed sufficient
water supple for the chemical processes. Electricity needs were also available in Bhopal to
supply enough electricity to the plant that enabled the plant to operate 24 hours. The origin on the
Bhopal plant was to supply pesticide in order to protect the Indian agricultural production. These
pesticides were made to cater to the Indian market and to gain the ability to transform its
agricultural sector into a modern activity. No doubt the benefits, the plant also had its perks. India
is still nonetheless a developing country which at current still lacks the infrastructure necessary to
support this chemical plant. Nevertheless, companies invested in the plant failing to realize the
flaws in the infrastructure. The impracticality of the plant s management brought the creation of
a low cost plant with minimal safety features. UCIL also had weak policies, procedures and
regulations for their workers. The management s goals and missions were set beyond the plant s
capability and this is said to be one of the main causes of the tragedy. 4. Industrial Processes and
Operation Union Carbide is a known plant that produces the pesticide plant in the Indian City of
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh for agriculture purposes in India. Using MIC as an intermediate, an

Nietzsche s Concept of Eternal Recurrence
Friedrich Nietzsche is a German philosopher who lived in 1844 to 1900, and his proposition on
eternal recurrence was one of his most discussed works. The concept states that the world is
eternally self destroying, then self creating, over time. He radicalizes the Christian concept of
eternity and combines it with simple reasoning to come up with an innovative concept. This
paper will discuss in detail what eternal recurrence is and the implications of such a concept on
free spirits, and whether adopting such a belief will make a person s life better or not. The paper
will then proceed to offer a response to criticism on Nietzsche s proposition. The text to be used is
the second edition of Existentialism: Basic Writings by Charles... Show more content on

For the paper to portray balance and respect to divergent opinions, it will offer an argument that
counters the chosen position, and then offer a response to this counter argument. Upon completion
of these, the paper will offer a conclusion that summarizes its contents and tie up all concepts
presented. Eternal recurrence is a notion that states that the world is recurrent and will continue in
such manner to form a self similar and infinite time. It was founded in ancient Indian and Egyptian
philosophy and was heavily employed by Nietzsche, who used it as a central faucet of his
philosophy. If such a concept was indeed true, and man lived a constantly recurring life, then its
adoption would result in a better life. This is because a person would try to maximize the number
of good experience, as every pleasure inducing experience will recur throughout (Guignon
Pereboom 2001). When a person believes that the same experiences will recur in other lives, then
one will want to ensure that most of these experiences are mostly gratifying, such that, through each
recurrence, the person will continue experiencing the same pleasure. The free spirit will aim at
engaging in activities that will result in a fulfilled life, meaning that a person will become more

Similarities And Differences Between The Wizard Of Oz Book...
Wisdom, Compassion and Courage
Throughout L. Frank Baum s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and the movie, directed by
Victor Fleming there are many powerful messages. Comparing bot the novel and the movie many
similarities and differences were observable. One dominant difference throughout the movie and
the book were the gifts from the wizard and how he bequeathed them to the scarecrow, the tin man
and the lion (Morris). The animals in the Wizard of Oz were self sufficient in wisdom, compassion
and courage; however, the animals did not have enough confidence to realize this throughout the
novel and film. The animals only portrayed these characteristics at the end. In the movie, the
scarecrow, tin man and the lion are given materialistic items; however, in the book they are told
wisdom, compassion, and courage are already inside each one of them and with help, these
characteristics are released.
The first character Dorothy meets while travelling to Emerald City, along the yellow brick road,
is the scarecrow. The movie and the book both compare the scarecrow stating he has no brains,
just stuffing. In the book there are times when the scarecrow seems to know what is right and
wrong and accepted behaviors for different situations. This is shown in the book when the Wicked
Witch told the bees to sting the scarecrow and the tin man; however, when the scarecrow saw the
bees coming, he told the tin man to help him take out all of his straw and spread it across the field

Control Mechanisms Paper
Control Mechanisms paper
RUNNING HEAD: Control Mechanism Paper
In order to understand control mechanisms, it is important to understand what control means in the
management world. Control refers to the workings of individuals being directed to achieve
organizational goals. This can be the way that managers keep their employees on track and focused
toward meeting their goals. The managers are controlling the employees. In order to meet the
organizational goals, there are certain control mechanisms that are used. In Wal Mart, four
examples of control mechanisms used include finance control, distribution control, audits, and
performance reviews. Finance control refers to the way that Wal Mart regulates their finances. This
refers to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be the most difficult part because you want your customers to be happy. Getting a poor
review is something that is inevitable, and should be handled as soon as possible because the
whole purpose of the review was to keep the company abreast of all things about the company. You
should regard your review as a learning experience, with this review you should be able to take
away valuable information that can hopefully help the company move forward Wal Mart
distribution control is the key to this company success. Wal Mart wants to take over the United
States services from suppliers in an attempt to reduce the cost of hauling supplies (Burit 2010).
This is a huge step in the right direction for this company because by Wal Mart doing this, they
have an advantage over the other competitors. Wal Mart wants to cut the time of delivery in half,
by having more fleets on the road, and by filling them to capacity, and dropping off directly to the
distribution centers and stores. The down side to the distribution control is Wal Mart will see an
increase in transportation costs. The control mechanisms are made up of the four functions of
management and this is considered the focused approach of Wal Mart. The four functions of
management are: planning and organizing, leading and controlling. These four functions play a
crucial role in monitoring to ensure compliance and providing control practices.

He is best known for the invention of the traffic signal light. Although he may not have been the
first to invent the traffic light, he was the first person to patent it. Morgan was born in Kentucky,
and was the son of former slaves. He only went to elementary school, but he continued to learn a
lot on his own, and became very independent. According to the book, Garrett Augustus Morgan:
Businessman, Inventor, Good Citizen, by Mary Oluyone, In 1920, Morgan went into the
newspaper business. He was very successful, and eventually bought a car. While he was driving
along the streets of Ohio, he realized how unsafe intersections were, and wanted to make driving
safer. Morgan created a new kind of traffic signal on November 20, 1923. This was the first
traffic signal patented, but not the first invented. His traffic signal was a T shaped pole with
arms (but with no lights) that had three signs, a red stop, a green go, and another red stop in all
directions. This last signal let walkers cross the street. An electric clock controlled it. This new
traffic signal became very popular, and was used all around the USA. Morgan sold his device to
the General Electric Corporation for $40,000 (a huge sum at that time). His device was used until

Heroes In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
When you think of heroes and villians you think comics. You think Batman and the Joker, Thor
and Loki, or some other pair like them. However, there are heroes and villians everywhere else
too; they are in real life, movies, and other literature like Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet is about two starcrossed lovers that fall in love, get married in secret, and
eventually fall to the fate of death too early in their lives. Juliet is a 13 year old girl who belongs
to the family of the Capulets. Some say she s very sweet and innocent and may put her into the hero
category, but others, like myself, think that she falls into the villian category. She is is a villian
because she is very manipulative and bratty at times, and she can ultimately be to blame for the

Led Zeppelin And Rush Research Paper
Led Zeppelin and Rush are two of the most legendary, Billboard topping, Grammy award
winning, Rock n Roll bands in the world. They both are very similar in many ways. The two
bands play similar genres and have been compared to each other a lot. Their likeness in sound has
even gotten them mistaken on the radio one time. When a Rush song was first debuted on the
radio, people were calling in asking when the new Led Zeppelinalbum was coming out. As being
award winners and legendary, both bands have been inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

They are though, even through their many differences. Both groups play a similar genre, which
is Rock n Roll. They both have even been mistaken for each other at times. Even though they are
both associated as playing the genre of Rock their styles are different. Rush has longer songs and
are more progressive, but Led Zeppelin plays Harder and more Metal like Rock. Also, both
bands being legendary Rock bands, have been into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Rush was
inducted in 2013 and Led Zeppelin in 1995. Led Zeppelin though was inducted by Aerosmith,
but Rush was inducted by the Foo Fighters. Rush s and Led Zeppelin s members are also similar.
Both Geddy Lee and John Paul Jones, the bassists of the two bands also play keyboards.
Although, Geddy sings and sometimes plays a foot keyboard. Also he uses Synthesizers to
create melodies for songs, but John Paul Jones plays electric pianos to add a back up to a sound.
Even though both bands are legendary, alike sounding, and award winners, they are still very
different. Rush and Led Zeppelin have been compared to each other, and have both one Grammy
s and topped the Billboard 10 list, but as Geddy Lee once said about musicians and bands, I guess,
we were just dedicated to trying to get better.

Censorship In Art
Since the beginning of time art has been an important aspect to our lives. We learn from it,
admire it, and some even relate to it in different ways. Art comes in many different forms it could
be sculptures, photography, paintings or music. Some forms of art could be inappropriate and
offensive to some people. Should all art be censored? A great deal of controversy has been
provoked by this. Although you may not think that different forms of art are beneficial to our
every day lives, actually they are. If there was no art, we would not have any idea how people
lived in the past. We still do not know exactly how they lived, but the artifacts left behind gives
us clues. Some of the art may show nuidty and be innapprotpiate. The artist definitely had a
meaning behind their piece of art, and had symbolism to it. From that we can get an idea to how
life was back then. Due to pieces of art like this, many people argue that art should be censored.
This goes back to Plato s proposal to ban mimetic art for its moral and epistemological evil (
Aesthetic Censorship: Censoring Art for Art s Sake ). Artists in the East and West have had to
denounce and deal with the censor of their art since the twentieth century ( Aesthetic Censorship:
Censoring Art for Art s Sake ). Since then popular artists have been doing everything they can to
protect art s freedom and right to exist ( Aesthetic Censorship: Censoring Art for Art s Sake ). For
example Michelangelo s, The Last Judgement that was

Does Edith Wharton Use Juxtapositions In New Year s Day
In the opening of New Year s Day, Edith Wharton uses a combination of literary devices including
flashback and juxtapositions to show that social values and customs of the day had changed since
days gone by. The author is in the present time and uses flashbacks to show how things were
looked at differently in the past. The author uses juxtapositions to compare the dissimilar past and
present to help add vividness to the given image. Throughout the passage, Wharton would flashback
to how people were feeling and the atmosphere of the past. Beginning in the first paragraph,
Wharton explains that his mother said, they used to meet at the Fifth Avenue Hotel (1 2) and that
she dropped the words in a hiss that might have singed the snowy baby blanket

Henry Of Livonia And The Baltic Crusades
Henry of Livonia the Baltic Crusades
Missions to the Baltic are a little known aspect of the Crusading era. Although these missions
clearly fed off of and fostered the crusading zeal, there is some debate as to whether or not they
should all be considered crusades. While the campaigns against the Wends and Prussians were
authorized by papal bulls and officially recognized as crusades, it is unclear whether the campaigns
to Livonia and Esthonia in the 13th century can be rightfully called crusades. These campaigns
seem, in some ways, motivated more by economic than religious concerns. They received only
unofficial and inconstant papal endorsement, and never enjoyed the same number and status of
pilgrims as the crusades to the Holy Land. Yet they were missions organized to convert the Baltic
to Christianity and, as such, did receive some level of papal support. Can they, then, be considered
crusades?
Indulgences throughout the Crusades
It is important, first, to consider the nature of the crusading ideal. The First crusade was preached
on the basis of two ideals, one concrete and one symbolic. The first was that Christian pilgrims
were being physically harmed in the Holy Land. The second was that the Holy Land was the land
of Christ. Thus, it was imperative to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims. To anyone who
would do this, Pope Urban granted remission of sins.
It was not until the Second crusade that the first papal bull regarding the crusades was issued.

Women s Right To Abortion In The United States
The 27 year old Salvadoran garment worker and single mother had miscarried without ever knowing
she was pregnant....hospital staff had suspected her of inducing an abortion and reported her to the
police.. A judge sentenced her to the maximum punishment for murder: 40 years in prison
(Albaladejo, A Witch Hunt Against Poor Women,27). This tragic story is sadly not the only one that
has happened in countries where abortionlaws are not as free as those of the United States, which
since the Roe vs. Wade has confirmed women s rights to abortion. Domestically, the United States
seems to be progressive compared to other countries such as Nicaragua, Chile, and Haiti who

The impact...is clear: preventing low income women, especially women of color, from making
their own decisions about what is best for their families and their lives (Albaladejo, A Witch
Hunt Against Poor Women,32). What is intriguing is that the U.S., an active member of the
United Nations, international policy does not correlate to the standards set by the U.N.
International standards set by the United Nations requires states to at least provide access to
safe and legal abortion in cases of rape, incest, or threats of the life of or health of the mother
(Albaladejo, A Witch Hunt Against Poor Women,32). How is it that the United States
international policy then does not give funding to clinics in less developed countries? How can
the United States policy makers decide that people such as an 11 year old Chilean girl...raped
and impregnated by her mother s boyfriend (Albaladejo, A Witch Hunt Against Poor Women,32)
can be denied access to a safe abortion and expected to be a mother. This reminded me of Hester
Einstein s discussion on SAPs and how the policy s intent does not always equal the outcome.
Because most of their food production is consumed within the family or traded in local markets,
women usually do not have the resources to switch to the export crops

Indonesia Globalization
Intro: Indonesia is the sixteenth largest economy, the largest economy in the South east Asian
economic region with the world s fourth largest population (263 million in 2017). It is an
emerging economy that has increased its international integration, trade liberalisation and diverted
from policies of import substitution towards export led development. Indonesia is a member of
the Group of 20 (G20) major economies and has been an active founding member of the World
Trade Organisation (WTO). The impact of globalisation has benefited Indonesia as quality of life
indicators and economic developments have improved but it also presents the challenge of
improving regulations, building more competitive industries, increasing investment into education
and infrastructure to remain competitive. Consequently, Indonesia has introduced numerous
strategies to promote economic growth and development. Body 1 (Impact of Globalisation
policies on trade) Globalisation as a catalyst for increased trade has led to Indonesia adopting
policies targeting economic growth and development. Indonesia represents 0.8% of global trade
value which has grown 240 times larger in 2016 compared to 1967. Globalisation has increased
international demand for Indonesian goods and services as their top trade partners are China,
Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea. As a result, Indonesia has joined the Association of

Helicopter Parents Essay
Within the past several years, I have seen many new ideas and theories as to how children should
be reared. One change that I have witnessed firsthand is the difference in the role a parent plays
in their child s life. In the article called Helicopter Parents Stir up Anxiety, Depression, the ideas
expressed were not the same my parents had when raising me. Some of the ideas expressed in
said article I resonated with as a child whose parents leaned towards being helicopters while others
I did not agree with as wholeheartedly.
One point made by the article was that being a helicopter parent causes the child to become to
dependent once they move away from home. While this is an issue, it does not appear to be as
big of a problem as the article implied. Of all the people I know, the worst form of dependency is
an individual being too financially dependent on their family. I personally believe that there can be
a healthy level of guarding your children. For example, while growing up, my family never allowed

they are able to find a job in the field of their degree. I have one friend in particular that had her

In this stage students are learning how to be moral, intellectually curious, and independent. The
third plane, from twelve to eighteen years is a psychologically unstable place where the
adolescent is trying to form the person they will be as they enter into society. This period is
creative, but students also express difficulty in concentration as they try to relate to peer groups
and the outside world, to find self esteem and define who they are. The fourth plane is when a
student enters the world and hopefully becomes a social aware and monetarily successful member
of society. To Maria Montessori her final and real goal was a student population that graduated her
program with a sense that they had a duty to society, to be strong moral leaders and increase peace.
Teachers, she said, must set a good example if there is to be a good humanity (Montessori, 1949).
Although the philosophy of Montessori education intersects greatly with progressivism, the schools
were often placed at odds with one another. A contemporary, collaborator, and student of John
Dewey, William Kilpatrick, orchestrated a series of lectures and writings that discounted
Montessori s teaching philosophy as egocentric and restrictive. He said that the learning materials
created hindered the imagination of the teacher and the emphasis on the individual would lead to an
entire generation of ill behaved egomaniacs (Shortridge, 2007). His critiques in combination with

What Is The Central Idea Of The Black Cat
The black cat is a story by Edgar Allen Poe. Some say he s a psychopath, or he s a loony, maybe

story unbelievable things happen because of his imagination. He was married, he had a good wife,
they didn t have children, but they were very fond to animals, they had much love for many

fifth child and the raise my husband had received was now starting to leave with all of our
children. It didn t matter because we had fought bigger storms than that and managed to make it
through. I loved my husband and what he wanted pretty much made sure that I complied with it.
Our family was expanding and I was happy and I felt great about it. Then sure enough, two years
later I had my sixth child. It was another girl and that was my true blessing, because I wasn t
ready for her and I had considered having an abortion. I asked Maurice to take me to get an
abortion in St. Louis because I was so far along I had to go out of state to where they could meet
my needs. We arrived at the clinic and I just couldn t do it. I had prayed about it and I just could
not go through with the abortion. I m glad that I didn t, she is just amazing to me. However,
things were starting to change all over again for my husband and myself. Maurice was back to
his old tricks of physically abusing me and cheating. I was home with the kids one day and one
of his mistresses had come by our house looking for him. I was livid and mentally crushed after
the lady had told me she was sleeping with my husband. When Maurice came home I told him what
had happened and of course he wormed

Renting an Apartment Is a Better Option Than Buying a House
Renting an apartment is a better option than buying a house I.Introduction
Many people may think that renting an apartment is a better option than buying a house, but there
are many things to take into consideration before deciding. If one were to know the advantages of
buying a house, one just might change his or her mind. Some people think that renting an apartment
is a better option than buying a house because they do not have to worry about the upkeep of the
property or have to pay for costly repairs; however, buying a house gives the owner extra money in
his or her pocket, the ability to modify, and stability.

If pets are included in a person s lifestyle, owning a house would be very beneficial, as many
landlords do not allow pets on their premises, or they charge an extra deposit if the tenant were
to have pets. There are many rules that come along with renting an apartment or house, whereas
there are no rules inside of ones home; however, some subdivisions may have ordinances about
certain things and that can be checked out before deciding your home s location. In one were to
need an extra room, one could simply add an addition to the house if the lot in which the house
is on is large enough instead of searching for a new place of residence. Many people enjoy
landscaping and gardening; however, there may not be any room for landscaping or gardening
while renting an apartment because multiple tenants will share a backyard. Sure homeowners are
responsible for lawn care and snow removal, but renters sometimes get stuck having to be
responsible for them as well because they get tired of waiting for the landlord to have the work
done. Purchasing a home with a fixed loan gives the homeowner a sense, as the monthly
mortgage payment will remain the same during the term of the loan as long as it is purchased at
a fixed rate. Rent is not guaranteed to stay the same and is often raised yearly. When starting a
family or raising a family, it is better to have a stable residence to call home

Sumerian Religion Research Paper
Sumerian Religion:
The Sumerian religion was very important to the world in many ways. They believed that after
you died, you would go to the underworld from your grave. Some of the rules for entering were:
You must not make noise.
You must not wear clean clothes.
You must not wear sandals.
You must not douse yourself with good oil.
After this, Utu would judge you soul. If you passed, you would live a happy new life in the
underworld.
Each city had a temple, or ziggurat to worship one of the gods. Some of the jobs of temple
workers include priests, priestesses, musicians, and singers. The priests had a job to keep the gods
happy, and were the doctors. In the center of the temple, there was a statue of the god that everyone

They were usually from other tribes that Sumer beat in a battle. Most slaves were owned by the
royal family. If you were wealthy, you could buy one. They had a hard and sometimes unfair life.
Government:
Each city state had its own ruler, who was called a lugal, en, or ensi. They were like a king or
governor. One of the most famous kings was named Gilgamesh. One of the oldest things ever
written was the Epic of Gilgamesh, which was, of course, about King Gilgamesh. The king was an
important part of the Sumerian government.
Besides the king, there were also government officials. They organized projects and helped keep
the city running. They had lots of laws that everyone had to follow or they would be severely
punished. Some people say that government was invented by the Sumerians. The government
officials had an important job.
The temples, or ziggurats, weren t just a place to worship the gods. They were also a place for food
and art storage, as well as a home for many people. The ziggurats were in the middle of the city
states. Each one had a certain god to worship. The temples were used for a lot of jobs.

The Pharmacognostic Characteristics between Spermacoce...
Spermacoce hispida L. is one of the important medicinal plants used in traditional systems of
medicine. It is observed that, several times it is difficult to differentiate the plant from the other
allied species from the same genus, Spermacoce, especially, when they are in drug form. Therefore,
the present study aims to document the differences in the pharmacognostic characters, preliminary
phytochemical analysis and polyphenolic contents from the leaves of four speciesbelonging to the
genus Spermacoce, viz. S. hispida L., S. mauritiana O. Gideon, S. stricta L. and S. ocymoides
Burm. Transverse section passing through the midrib with lamina on either sides, epidermal
characters, leafconstants, organoleptic characters, physicochemical analysis, extractive values
and preliminary phytochemical analysis were carried out for all these species. Total Phenolic
Content (TPC) by Folin Ciocalteu method and Total Flavonoids (TF) by AlCl3 method were
also estimated from the leaves of all these species. The results indicated that S. hispida can be
clearly differentiated from the other selected species on the basis of size and number of
epidermal cells, size of trichomes, leaf constants, physicochemical analysis and extractive values.
However, it is also found that S. hispida possess TPC at 6.88В±0.34 mg CAE/g and 9.17В±0.46
mg TAE/g. TF was at 5.98В±0.30 mg QE/g. The study will provide information with respect to
identification and differentiation selected species of genus Spermacoce.

Importance Of Learning A Foreign Language Essay
Learning a foreign language involves developing new skills and going through different stages.
The four skills you need to develop are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You need to be
able to understand when someone speaks the language you are learning. In addition to that, you
need to be able to express yourself in that language. Most of the time, the written language is more
complex than the spoken language. You want to be able to understand a text you read. Moreover,
you want to be able to express your ideas in writing, with the right words and correct grammar.
Acquiring these four skills requires various study patterns.
Building Vocabulary
First of all, you need to build vocabulary. Building vocabulary involves learning the meaning of the
words, their spelling, and pronunciation. Unlike in English, each word has a gender in many
languages like French, Spanish, and German. You need to memorize the gender of a word in order
to use it correctly. You also need to learn the conjugations of verbs and adjectives. That is where
you cross the border between the vocabulary and grammar.
Studying Grammar
In order to learn a foreign language, you need to study its grammar, the structural rules of a
language. Most of the time, grammar is a complicated subject to understand, to learn, and to use
correctly. To make things even more complicated, you will need to memorize the exceptions to the
grammar rules you learn.
Reading
If you have sufficient vocabulary and a good

Christian Symbolism and Chivalric Ideals in Sir Gawain and...
Upon first Reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, I noticed that it comes off as a romantic
normative poem about chivalric ideals and traditions of the ruling class with covertly Christian
Images. The protagonist character Sir Gawain stands out as the role model of the chivalric ideals of
the 14th century while displaying Christian images on his armor. The combination of Gawain s
armor and actions throughout the poem exemplify his characteristics of Christian perfection and
chivalric ideals. The very first scene with Bertilak of Hautdesert known as the Green Knight begins
to mold your perception of how chivalrous Sir Gawain is by portraying him as valiant, humble, and
virtuous knight to Arthur. I felt that the interruption of Arthur... Show more content on

Even the armor without the pentangle had a religious importance in medieval literature because
to be adorned in armor was to be strengthened in the lord, in the might of his power ... [and with]
the armor of God that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil (Green 126),
which comes into play when Bertilak s wife tries to seduce Gawain. In this instance Bertilak is
representative of the devil and he is using his wife to test Gawain to see if he would commit
sodomy and break his religious and knightly code. This scene is extremely important since he has
been divested of his armor, relived of his helmet, horse and his coat (Ashton 60), basically
everything physical that reminds him of his faith. However, even without his armor being a
constant reminder of his faith and honor he proves he is truly faithful and chivalrous by turning
down Bertilak s wife. To get a better understanding of the meaning and importance of the pentangle
we must analyze the author s description of the meaning of it or lack thereof. The author does give
examples of the meanings of the symbol being explained as Gawain being faithful in five ways
which he describes. However, the author doesn t tell us what he means when he talks about the
things we call meaning (Arthur 221), this gives the assumption that either at the time readers would

Melting Point Chromatography
Experiment 3: Identification of an Unknown Mixture by Extraction, Recrystallization, and Melting
Point Determination Abstract In this experiment, an unknown compound was identified using
extraction and recrystallization techniques. This was followed by a determination of the melting
points of the extracted and recrystallized substances. Each unknown compound consisted of two
substances that were either a carboxylic acid, a phenol or a neutral. In this particular experiment,
unknown compound three was identified and was found to consist of the carboxylic acid 2
chlorobenzoic acid, as well as the phenol 2 naphthol. This was determined using the melting
points of the substances. The first substance had a melting point of 134.0В°C, which is very
close to the literature value of 138 140В°C1 for 2 chlorobenzoic acid. The other substance had a
melting point of 126.5В°C, which is also very close to the literature melting point of 120 122В°C1
for 2 naphthol. Out of the 1.001g of the original unknown sample, 0.456g of carboxylic acid and
0.448g of the phenol were recovered. This gave percent yields of 91.1% and 89.6%. These high
percent yields and melting points indicate that the extraction and recrystallization performed in this
experiment were successful. Introduction... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Offences Against the Person Act 1861 Essay
There has been much discussion on the Offences against the person act (OAPA) 1861. Many see
the act as outdated and clumsy, its wording unclear and as being difficult to explain and
prosecute under. The OAPA is used in 100,000 prosecutions every year. The Law Commission
has attacked the OAPA for creating constant legal argument and delay because of unclear
wording and wasting thousands of pounds in taxpayer s money in appeals. Both the Law
Commission and the Government have looked at possible reforms for the act in order to improve
its position in English Law. The 1861 Act is widely criticised for being archaic and unclear, it is in

In some cases the words used are open to interpretation, which can lead to conflicting decisions
based on the meaning of a single word. There is no clear statutory definition of assault or battery,
this means that it is often left to a judge to decide his own meanings of the words and apply them
in a case. This could lead to injustice as he may decide more strict meaning than is widely
accepted as a definition. With the more serious offences the words are often antiquated and in
some cases misleading for example assault and maliciously . This is because it is an old piece of
legislation, and the vocabulary used in 1861 has evolved to have different meanings in modern
England. The wording has also lead to a gap in the law, with, in certain cases defendants getting off
a crime, which in terms of common sense he is guilty of. For instance if man in the street
threatens to kill you it would be seen as assault. But if he shouts that he is going to kill you
tomorrow in the eyes of the law that is not an assault, even though any reasonable person can see
that it is a clear danger to the person the threat is directed to.
Another area of criticism is the hierarchy of the offences; the offences are listed in terms of
seriousness with the most serious offences being first in the Act. There are major differences in the
sentencing within the sentences and this has lead to criticism. For

Analysis Of Teenage Wasteland By Anne Tyler
Parenting is a very tough job, and not all people are fully suited for it. It is an especially
burdensome job when the kid that is being raised is someone who does not perform well in
school and hinders authority. The task described here is one Daisy has to deal with in Teenage
Wasteland by Anne Tyler. Daisy, a mother of two, who is filled with a lot of tentative thoughts,
must make choices to raise her troublesome son Donny correctly. However, when she is
constantly doing all the wrong things to amend her son s demons, it leads him down a spiraling
path of trouble both academically and mentally. Daisy is responsible for both Donny s academic
and life failures as she does not grasp an understanding of her son s issues, lets everyone else parent
her son for her, and is too harsh on Donny which causes him to abhor authority.
Daisy is naive, insecure, and does not understand what Donny is going through, and her doubtful
thoughts influences all of Daisy s actions to be ones that would help Donny s failure. Daisy
sends Donny down a bad path by not having an understanding of her son which leads her to
employ people to fix her son for her. Daisy gives in to what the school told her is best when, It
was arranged that Donny would visit a psychologist. Mr Lanham knew just the person. He
would set this boy straight he said...Daisy held her stomach in and gave Mr. Lanham a firm,
responsible handshake (Tyler 288). Her self doubt and ignorance here allows other people tell
her what is best for her son, and she blindly listens. Daisy thinks to herself that she was a failure
earlier in the meeting, and it seems she wants to do whatever would fix her son. She even
physically displays insecurity when she gets up to shake Mr. Lanham s hand. She puts no
thought into what is best for Donny and lets other people arrange sessions for her son. In another
instance, Daisy s insecurities allows Donny to fail by letting other people tell her what the issue
with her son is, which they were mostly wrong about. After Daisy gets a call from Donny s
teacher Miss Evans about her son failing school, she calls up Cal for him to say that it was the
teacher s fault and grades come in time. To which Daisy thought, When she hung up, it was

The Pros And Cons Of Toxic Waste
Toxic waste disposal should be on everyone s mind in the United States. Even if this problem
does not affect our surroundings first hand, it may end up affecting us later down the road. The
way toxic waste is disposed of throughout America is not always the most legal way or the most
safe way. Toxic waste should be carefully watched, but it is always left to businesses to declare
what they want to do with it. Whether they want to dispose of toxic wastelegally or illegally, it s up
to them. No matter what produced the toxic waste, the waste itself is always the last thought on the
minds of the businesses. As long as the waste is disposed of and it doesn t cost them a significant
amount of money is all that matters to them. This should be a concern for everyone in the United
Statesand not just the people in the vicinity of the toxic waste. The people in the vicinity of the
toxic waste may be hit with the hardest problems, but we are all at risk. Toxic waste has the
ability to move freely and could easily move anywhere in the United States. Toxic waste also doesn

Although, Guatemala had size and power, El Salvador was able to resist takeovers but it left

Likewise, El Salvador has also had a history of violence because of the Salvadoran Civil War that
lasted from 1979 to 1992. This civil war took the lives of approximately 80,000 soldiers and
civilians in El Salvador (Wood, 1). The Civil War separated families as some were granted
temporary protection in the United States during the war, and while others lived as undocumented

Voltaire s Use Of Satire In Candide
In his novel Candide, Voltaire attacks a plethora of philosophies, religions, and groups. Through
the book s tragic adventure, Voltaire satirizes nearly every character that Candide encounters in
order to reveal the absurdities of the Enlightenment Era in which Voltaire lives. He uses several
means of satire to reveal the foolishness of various ideas and the absurdity of following any one
idea to an extreme extent. Through his work, Voltairehopes to expose the reader to the irrationality
and vices of the world in which he lives, while using literary techniques to illuminate his claims.
The most ubiquitous literary technique used by Voltaire is exaggeration. Voltaire includes plenty
of hyperboles that serve to subtly attack his adversaries by poking satirical fun at their beliefs. We

He does this to ridicule different people and ideas, while also providing historical context for the
reader to relate to. Voltaire became frustrated by the wrongdoing and unexplainable disasters that

horrific earthquake in Lisbon in 1755. Thousands of people died during this tragic earthquake.
Voltaire highlights the corruption of people in times of disaster, and the recurrence of Pangloss s

because everything is for the best (Voltaire 35). The sailor s actions and Pangloss s words articulate

Historical Context In Sonnet 90 By Francesco Petracca
When studying literature, understanding the context of the piece gives us insight into not only the
historical aspect of the piece but also the significance of the piece in relation to the composer. By
studying these texts we are further able to understand and interpret both society at the time and the
context in which the composer found influence for the composition. To give a complete response to
the compositions, we must know and understand how the composers were influenced by their
historical context. We must also compare texts to other of the same nature to truly discover how the
context of the time influenced both the composers and their compositions.
Sonnet 90 , by Francesco Petrarca is one such piece that, when compared with another, gives such
insight. The first instance of historical influence can be found in the piece itself. The literary
technique used was one that was prevalent during the 1300 s, and had a strong influence on the
form used by Petrarch in his poetry. Sonnet 90 , just one of many written by Petrarch over a period
of forty years and our first example of context, is the sonnet itself. The sonnet contains two
sections, fourteen lines in total, and uses two rigid and distinct rhyme schemes. The octave (first
eight lines) incorporates the usual ABBA ABBA rhyme scheme, but the sestet (last six lines)
diverts from this scheme using CDE FCE, a variation of the more common CDC DCD. This
technique had been considered a very elegant and suitable form for

Diarrheal Research Paper
Diarrheal is an intestinal disorder in which an individual is induced to frequently release fecal.
This consistent fluid loss leads to dehydration and nutrient loss. If an individual is not able to
replace the loss in due amount of time, this can eventually lead to death. Nevertheless, although it
may seem diarrheal (the constant release of fecal) is the cause of painful effects, it is not. Rather
diarrhea is a mechanism the body uses to get rid of the harmful bacteria(pathogen) inside the body.
The pathogen is typically presented in the water and food one consumes, and is injected in the
body. This infection known as amoebiasis is most prevalent in developing countries, because water

Dostoyevsky †Notes from Underground’ Critique Essay
Notes from Underground was published in 1864 as a feature presentation of his first 1860 issue
The Epoch . Notes from Underground was written by the author during a time when he faced
many challenges in his life. Dostoyevsky faced failure in the publishing of his first journal Time
, his financial position was becoming weaker and embarrassing. Moreover, his wife was dying
and his conservatism was eroded leading to a decline in his popularity with the liberal reading
Russians and consequently, he became the focus of attack by the radical and liberal press (Fanger
3). Therefore, this research seeks to find how the author presents the aspect of underground man
and how he approached Charles Darwins thoughts of man in Origin of the... Show more content on

By the time the author had completed writing Notes from Underground the society had moved to
liberalism and abandoned reasoning and enlightenment (Frank 35). This is clearly represented in
this novel since by the end, as the author concluded that there was more to man than enlightenment
and reasoning.
The underground man is an educated, literate, forty year old financially stable man, who, lives in a
modern society. As the novel progresses, the underground man remembers the days he used to work
without any affection. The man lives now alone in a place described as unattractive where he is
completely cut off from friends and family (Fanger 5). This situation provides an indication of the
troubles underground man is going through for they do not arise from work, money problems or the
lack of social interaction opportunities. This man has money, is educated and has plenty of social
interaction opportunities but he d rather remain in his solitude, Dostoevsky shows that in all respect
the man has reached enlightenment (Frank 36).
The problems of underground man are all concerned with what is happening to him from the
inside. This man is suffering from a disease that arises from his lack of feeling completely healthy.
Though the novel has depicted many medical discussions on doctors, liver problems, medicines, the
real disease is emotional distress. The entire first section of the book is about how emotionally
troubled the underground

Coach Carter by Jasmine Jones
As a student enters the gym doors of Smith Cotton they can see various trophies from our
athletic teams, along with our JROTC National Championship banners that hang up from the
walls. One can see by the quality of our gym that our sports are a main part of our school, but as
one wonders on into the hallways of our school, they can see how dull they are. By the plainness
of the walls, there seems to be no life, in the JROTC hallway you see the trophy cabinet full of
multiple national trophies and as you venture on you get to see images of what these teams do,
along with the bulletin board that shows newspaper articles of the success of the program. But as
you continue to walk toward the other side of the classroom, one can only see some bulletin
boards that do not have many things on them except for some advertising. Just by observing this,
a new student can see that our school has a great deal to do with sports, but what they cannot see
is how well this school performs academically. As we walk down the halls you rarely see a student
s work displayed. So one can assume what James Coleman thinks to be correct, that altogether, the
trophy case would suggest to the innocent visitor that he was entering an athletic club, not an
educational institution. This is a dilemma among many schools that is sometime not dealt with
adequately. There are some films that only display the glory of being on a team and winning
championship titles; there are hardly ever any films that display

Canadian Thanksgiving Research Paper
Canadian Thanksgiving English explorer Martin Frobisher hosted the first Canadian Thanksgiving.
It was held in what is now Newfoundland during his expedition s attempts to find the Northwest
Passage to the Orient in 1578 and marked their safe arrival to the New World. The festival
continued with the purpose of celebrating a bountiful harvest. With time, French, Scottish, and
German immigrants to Canadaadded some of their traditions to the harvest festival. American
traditions like turkey were added by the United Empire Loyalists around the time of the American
Revolution. The festival did not have a fixed date until the late 19th century, at which time it was
usually held on November 6th. In 1957 the Canadian Parliament proclaimed Thanksgiving... Show

The Wampanoag Native Americans helped the pilgrims cultivate the land and fish, saving them
from starvation. At harvest time the pilgrims were thankful that they had a good crop of food to eat
during the coming winter. They thanked God and the Wampanoags for teaching them how to grow
crops. In the United States Thanksgiving was observed on various dates but by the mid 20th
century most states celebrated on the last Thursday in November. On December 26, 1941
President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill into law making Thanksgiving a national holiday
and settling it to the 4th Tuesday in November. The day after Thanksgiving is also a holiday
giving many Americans a 4 day weekend. Traditional Thanksgiving food includes turkey, sweet
potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Pumpkin pie is sweet and many people make
sweet potato casseroles with marshmallows on top. Depending on where you are in the country
most stuffing is made with cornbread or oysters. Many American s spend Thanksgiving morning
watching the Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The afternoon and evening is spent watching a
variety of professional and college football

Introduction
In 1999, The Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide raised their cost by announcing their new
aggressive frequent guest program that was accompanied by a fifty million dollar advertising
campaign. The head of Hilton HHonors program, Jeff Diskin, recognized their competition and
realized Hilton would have to raise their costs to keep up with demand. Two entirely unrelated
corporations controlled Hilton brand: Hilton Hotels Corporation (HHC) and Hilton International
(HIC). At this point in time, Hilton was very well recognized, but was limited because of a varying
product from property. In return, this challenged customer expectations due to such a variety of
product offerings. Hilton s customers needed a standard of what to ... Show more content on

Some franchisees may be difficult to motivate/persuade to follow the new strategies and it can
affect the overall customer satisfaction %, since promised rewards/services are not properly
followed. That could do a serious damage not only to HHonors loyalty program, but to brands
name itself. Customer Service: The idea of HHonors program can be seen a little bit
discriminating towards majority of average customers. The idea is to pay as much attention and
recognition to top clients, since the most of the profit comes out of them. And that s why, when
a customer is interacting with a member of a staff, staff members are encouraged to check the
system to find the information of that specific customer to find out his/her importance to the
chain. And obviously, it can be assumed that the service quality will vary too, as soon as this
employee will establish the level of importance of this specific customer. Mission is to make sure
that staff recognizes the best customers, shown in HHonors program database, in order to make
sure that these guests get a personal welcome (p.543). It sounds to be very difficult to make sure
that staff always recognizes top guest in the database. There is a big chance that the guest whom is
highly rated in the system is visiting this specific hotel for the first time, so it is very difficult to

Definition of Agency Theory
Definition of Agency Theory
A supposition that explains the relationship between principals and agents in business. Agency
theory is concerned with resolving problems that can exist in agency relationships; that is,
between principals (such as shareholders) and agents of the principals (for example, company
executives). The two problems that agency theory addresses are: 1.) the problems that arise when
the desires or goals of the principal and agent are in conflict, and the principal is unable to verify
(because it difficult and/or expensive to do so) what the agent is actually doing; and 2.) the
problems that arise when the principal and agent have different attitudes towards risk. Because of
different risk tolerances, the principal and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Outside investors recognize that the firm will make decisions contrary to their best interests.
Accordingly, investors will discount the prices they are willing to pay for the firm s securities.
A potential agency conflict arises whenever the manager of a firm owns less than 100 percent of
the firm s common stock. If a firm is a sole proprietorship managed by the owner, the owner
manager will undertake actions to maximize his or her own welfare. The owner manager will
probably measure utility by personal wealth, but may trade off other considerations, such as
leisure and perquisites, against personal wealth. If the owner manager forgoes a portion of his or
her ownership by selling some of the firm s stock to outside investors, a potential conflict of
interest, called an agency conflict, arises. For example, the owner manager may prefer a more
leisurely lifestyle and not work as vigorously to maximize shareholder wealth, because less of the
wealth will now accrue to the owner manager. In addition, the owner manager may decide to
consume more perquisites, because some of the cost of the consumption of benefits will now be
borne by the outside shareholders.

Reaching Mastery Should Be An Important Part Of Most...
Reaching mastery should be an important part of most people s lives. There are things to consider
when trying to achieve and master something important. Daniel Pink wrote the book Imagine
talking about what really motivates us. I would like to focus mainly on chapter five out of the
book, Mastery. The main points in this chapter Pink covers are engagement, flow and the three laws
of mastery.
In order to make progress there needs to be meaningful feedback, this is known as autonomy.
The desire to be self directed and a lead to engagement, Only engagement can produce mastery
(Pink 109). The point Daniel Pink is trying to make is that in order for success and mastery, there
absolutely needs to be engagement. Humans have developed a way of doing things in which
they feel programed to do tasks in routine. In order for individuals to solve difficult tasks and
problems, it is important for them to be willing to experiment different ways of doing things.
This is where engagement comes in because it is important and essential for people to come up
with new solutions and it is the key to mastery. The amount of disengagement in work places has
been costing about 300 billion dollars a year just in the United States. Pink also believes that in
order to live a satisfying life we need to meet more than just simple demands, We have way too
much compliance and way too little engagement (Pink 110). Jonah Lehrer gives us a preview of
how the Pixar studio engages with their work, in his

Abstract The night of 3rd December marked an industrial disaster when more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India that instantly led to the death of approximately 3,800 people and causing permanent injuries for thousands more. The company involved shamelessly tried to avoid its legal responsibility. Electricity needs were also available in Bhopal to supply enough electricity to the plant that enabled the plant to operate 24 hours. The origin on the Bhopal plant was to supply pesticide in order to protect the Indian agricultural production. These pesticides were made to cater to the Indian market and to gain the ability to transform its agricultural sector into a modern activity. No doubt the benefits, the plant also had its perks. India is still nonetheless a developing country which at current still lacks the infrastructure necessary to support this chemical plant. Nevertheless, companies invested in the plant failing to realize the flaws in the infrastructure. The impracticality of the plant s management brought the creation of a low cost plant with minimal safety features. UCIL also had weak policies, procedures and regulations for their workers. The management s goals and missions were set beyond the plant s capability and this is said to be one of the main causes of the tragedy. 4. • 4. Nietzsche s Concept of Eternal Recurrence Friedrich Nietzsche is a German philosopher who lived in 1844 to 1900, and his proposition on eternal recurrence was one of his most discussed works. The concept states that the world is eternally self destroying, then self creating, over time. He radicalizes the Christian concept of eternity and combines it with simple reasoning to come up with an innovative concept. This paper will discuss in detail what eternal recurrence is and the implications of such a concept on free spirits, and whether adopting such a belief will make a person s life better or not. The paper will then proceed to offer a response to criticism on Nietzsche s proposition. The text to be used is the second edition of Existentialism: Basic Writings by Charles... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the paper to portray balance and respect to divergent opinions, it will offer an argument that counters the chosen position, and then offer a response to this counter argument. Upon completion of these, the paper will offer a conclusion that summarizes its contents and tie up all concepts presented. Eternal recurrence is a notion that states that the world is recurrent and will continue in such manner to form a self similar and infinite time. It was founded in ancient Indian and Egyptian philosophy and was heavily employed by Nietzsche, who used it as a central faucet of his philosophy. If such a concept was indeed true, and man lived a constantly recurring life, then its adoption would result in a better life. This is because a person would try to maximize the number of good experience, as every pleasure inducing experience will recur throughout (Guignon Pereboom 2001). When a person believes that the same experiences will recur in other lives, then one will want to ensure that most of these experiences are mostly gratifying, such that, through each recurrence, the person will continue experiencing the same pleasure. The free spirit will aim at engaging in activities that will result in a fulfilled life, meaning that a person will become more ambitious, more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Similarities And Differences Between The Wizard Of Oz Book... Wisdom, Compassion and Courage Throughout L. Frank Baum s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and the movie, directed by Victor Fleming there are many powerful messages. Comparing bot the novel and the movie many similarities and differences were observable. One dominant difference throughout the movie and the book were the gifts from the wizard and how he bequeathed them to the scarecrow, the tin man and the lion (Morris). The animals in the Wizard of Oz were self sufficient in wisdom, compassion and courage; however, the animals did not have enough confidence to realize this throughout the novel and film. The animals only portrayed these characteristics at the end. In the movie, the scarecrow, tin man and the lion are given materialistic items; however, in the book they are told wisdom, compassion, and courage are already inside each one of them and with help, these characteristics are released. The first character Dorothy meets while travelling to Emerald City, along the yellow brick road, is the scarecrow. The movie and the book both compare the scarecrow stating he has no brains, just stuffing. In the book there are times when the scarecrow seems to know what is right and wrong and accepted behaviors for different situations. This is shown in the book when the Wicked Witch told the bees to sting the scarecrow and the tin man; however, when the scarecrow saw the bees coming, he told the tin man to help him take out all of his straw and spread it across the field (Baum ... This last signal let walkers cross the street. An electric clock controlled it. This new traffic signal became very popular, and was used all around the USA. • 10. Censorship In Art Since the beginning of time art has been an important aspect to our lives. We learn from it, admire it, and some even relate to it in different ways. Art comes in many different forms it could be sculptures, photography, paintings or music. Some forms of art could be inappropriate and offensive to some people. Should all art be censored? A great deal of controversy has been provoked by this. Although you may not think that different forms of art are beneficial to our every day lives, actually they are. If there was no art, we would not have any idea how people lived in the past. We still do not know exactly how they lived, but the artifacts left behind gives us clues. Some of the art may show nuidty and be innapprotpiate. The artist definitely had a meaning behind their piece of art, and had symbolism to it. From that we can get an idea to how life was back then. Due to pieces of art like this, many people argue that art should be censored. This goes back to Plato s proposal to ban mimetic art for its moral and epistemological evil ( Aesthetic Censorship: Censoring Art for Art s Sake ). Artists in the East and West have had to denounce and deal with the censor of their art since the twentieth century ( Aesthetic Censorship: Censoring Art for Art s Sake ). Since then popular artists have been doing everything they can to protect art s freedom and right to exist ( Aesthetic Censorship: Censoring Art for Art s Sake ). • 12. Henry Of Livonia And The Baltic Crusades Henry of Livonia the Baltic Crusades Missions to the Baltic are a little known aspect of the Crusading era. Although these missions clearly fed off of and fostered the crusading zeal, there is some debate as to whether or not they should all be considered crusades. While the campaigns against the Wends and Prussians were authorized by papal bulls and officially recognized as crusades, it is unclear whether the campaigns to Livonia and Esthonia in the 13th century can be rightfully called crusades. These campaigns seem, in some ways, motivated more by economic than religious concerns. They received only unofficial and inconstant papal endorsement, and never enjoyed the same number and status of pilgrims as the crusades to the Holy Land. Yet they were missions organized to convert the Baltic to Christianity and, as such, did receive some level of papal support. Can they, then, be considered crusades? Indulgences throughout the Crusades It is important, first, to consider the nature of the crusading ideal. The First crusade was preached on the basis of two ideals, one concrete and one symbolic. The first was that Christian pilgrims were being physically harmed in the Holy Land. The second was that the Holy Land was the land of Christ. Thus, it was imperative to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims. To anyone who would do this, Pope Urban granted remission of sins. It was not until the Second crusade that the first papal bull regarding the crusades was issued. Eugenius ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

International standards set by the United Nations requires states to at least provide access to safe and legal abortion in cases of rape, incest, or threats of the life of or health of the mother (Albaladejo, A Witch Hunt Against Poor Women,32). In the article called Helicopter Parents Stir up Anxiety, Depression, the ideas expressed were not the same my parents had when raising me. Some of the ideas expressed in said article I resonated with as a child whose parents leaned towards being helicopters while others I did not agree with as wholeheartedly. One point made by the article was that being a helicopter parent causes the child to become to dependent once they move away from home. While this is an issue, it does not appear to be as big of a problem as the article implied. In this stage students are learning how to be moral, intellectually curious, and independent. The third plane, from twelve to eighteen years is a psychologically unstable place where the adolescent is trying to form the person they will be as they enter into society. This period is creative, but students also express difficulty in concentration as they try to relate to peer groups and the outside world, to find self esteem and define who they are. The fourth plane is when a student enters the world and hopefully becomes a social aware and monetarily successful member of society. To Maria Montessori her final and real goal was a student population that graduated her program with a sense that they had a duty to society, to be strong moral leaders and increase peace. Teachers, she said, must set a good example if there is to be a good humanity (Montessori, 1949). Although the philosophy of Montessori education intersects greatly with progressivism, the schools were often placed at odds with one another. A contemporary, collaborator, and student of John Dewey, William Kilpatrick, orchestrated a series of lectures and writings that discounted Montessori s teaching philosophy as egocentric and restrictive. He said that the learning materials created hindered the imagination of the teacher and the emphasis on the individual would lead to an entire generation of ill behaved egomaniacs (Shortridge, 2007). • 24. Importance Of Learning A Foreign Language Essay Learning a foreign language involves developing new skills and going through different stages. The four skills you need to develop are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You need to be able to understand when someone speaks the language you are learning. In addition to that, you need to be able to express yourself in that language. Most of the time, the written language is more complex than the spoken language. You want to be able to understand a text you read. Moreover, you want to be able to express your ideas in writing, with the right words and correct grammar. Acquiring these four skills requires various study patterns. Building Vocabulary First of all, you need to build vocabulary. Building vocabulary involves learning the meaning of the words, their spelling, and pronunciation. Unlike in English, each word has a gender in many languages like French, Spanish, and German. You need to memorize the gender of a word in order to use it correctly. You also need to learn the conjugations of verbs and adjectives. That is where you cross the border between the vocabulary and grammar. Studying Grammar In order to learn a foreign language, you need to study its grammar, the structural rules of a language. Upon first Reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, I noticed that it comes off as a romantic normative poem about chivalric ideals and traditions of the ruling class with covertly Christian Images. The protagonist character Sir Gawain stands out as the role model of the chivalric ideals of the 14th century while displaying Christian images on his armor. The combination of Gawain s armor and actions throughout the poem exemplify his characteristics of Christian perfection and chivalric ideals. This scene is extremely important since he has been divested of his armor, relived of his helmet, horse and his coat (Ashton 60), basically everything physical that reminds him of his faith. Melting Point Chromatography Experiment 3: Identification of an Unknown Mixture by Extraction, Recrystallization, and Melting Point Determination Abstract In this experiment, an unknown compound was identified using extraction and recrystallization techniques. This was followed by a determination of the melting points of the extracted and recrystallized substances. Each unknown compound consisted of two substances that were either a carboxylic acid, a phenol or a neutral. In this particular experiment, unknown compound three was identified and was found to consist of the carboxylic acid 2 chlorobenzoic acid, as well as the phenol 2 naphthol. This was determined using the melting points of the substances. The first substance had a melting point of 134.0В°C, which is very close to the literature value of 138 140В°C1 for 2 chlorobenzoic acid. The other substance had a melting point of 126.5В°C, which is also very close to the literature melting point of 120 122В°C1 for 2 naphthol. Out of the 1.001g of the original unknown sample, 0.456g of carboxylic acid and 0.448g of the phenol were recovered. This gave percent yields of 91.1% and 89.6%. In some cases the words used are open to interpretation, which can lead to conflicting decisions based on the meaning of a single word. There is no clear statutory definition of assault or battery, this means that it is often left to a judge to decide his own meanings of the words and apply them in a case. This could lead to injustice as he may decide more strict meaning than is widely accepted as a definition. With the more serious offences the words are often antiquated and in some cases misleading for example assault and maliciously . This is because it is an old piece of legislation, and the vocabulary used in 1861 has evolved to have different meanings in modern England. The wording has also lead to a gap in the law, with, in certain cases defendants getting off a crime, which in terms of common sense he is guilty of. For instance if man in the street threatens to kill you it would be seen as assault. But if he shouts that he is going to kill you tomorrow in the eyes of the law that is not an assault, even though any reasonable person can see that it is a clear danger to the person the threat is directed to. • 35. Historical Context In Sonnet 90 By Francesco Petracca When studying literature, understanding the context of the piece gives us insight into not only the historical aspect of the piece but also the significance of the piece in relation to the composer. By studying these texts we are further able to understand and interpret both society at the time and the context in which the composer found influence for the composition. To give a complete response to the compositions, we must know and understand how the composers were influenced by their historical context. We must also compare texts to other of the same nature to truly discover how the context of the time influenced both the composers and their compositions. Sonnet 90 , by Francesco Petrarca is one such piece that, when compared with another, gives such insight. The first instance of historical influence can be found in the piece itself. The literary technique used was one that was prevalent during the 1300 s, and had a strong influence on the form used by Petrarch in his poetry. Sonnet 90 , just one of many written by Petrarch over a period of forty years and our first example of context, is the sonnet itself. The sonnet contains two sections, fourteen lines in total, and uses two rigid and distinct rhyme schemes. The octave (first eight lines) incorporates the usual ABBA ABBA rhyme scheme, but the sestet (last six lines) diverts from this scheme using CDE FCE, a variation of the more common CDC DCD. Reproductive Rights Introduction There is a time bomb that is ready to go off, possibly within our lifetime; this device is constructed not by terrorist but by an ever increasing world population. In an effort to combat its own population problem, China has promoted policies with the intent of slowing down the growth rate of that nation s approximately 1.3 billion people. The population policies that are be ing adopted raise fundamental issues concerning human rights. Does a government have the right to place limits on the size of the family through official policies? The answer to that question is No! The Peoples Republic of China s adoption of a Two Child and its predecessor the One Child policy is a violation of basic human reproductive rights. Support of ... Furthermore, it is unlikely that China s official policy regarding family size will go away; more than likely the current policy will be replaced by another of similar content. Authors Final Thoughts I have seen firsthand the effects of China s, One Child policy. I was in China over the summer of 2015 attending a summer camp sponsored by the Confucius Institute at CCD on the campus of The University of Jinan. I encountered with a lot of students my age and I noticed that the majority of them are an only child with an exception of one who had two other siblings; meaning that the family had to pay the government for two extra children. The students and I were talking about our families and I mentioned that I have three other siblings and their reaction was that of shock due to coming from a large ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Diarrheal Research Paper Diarrheal is an intestinal disorder in which an individual is induced to frequently release fecal. This consistent fluid loss leads to dehydration and nutrient loss. If an individual is not able to replace the loss in due amount of time, this can eventually lead to death. Nevertheless, although it may seem diarrheal (the constant release of fecal) is the cause of painful effects, it is not. Rather diarrhea is a mechanism the body uses to get rid of the harmful bacteria(pathogen) inside the body. The pathogen is typically presented in the water and food one consumes, and is injected in the body. This infection known as amoebiasis is most prevalent in developing countries, because water sanitation may not be fully adhered to be taken action for. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the time the author had completed writing Notes from Underground the society had moved to liberalism and abandoned reasoning and enlightenment (Frank 35). This is clearly represented in this novel since by the end, as the author concluded that there was more to man than enlightenment and reasoning. The underground man is an educated, literate, forty year old financially stable man, who, lives in a modern society. As the novel progresses, the underground man remembers the days he used to work without any affection. The man lives now alone in a place described as unattractive where he is completely cut off from friends and family (Fanger 5). This situation provides an indication of the troubles underground man is going through for they do not arise from work, money problems or the lack of social interaction opportunities. This man has money, is educated and has plenty of social interaction opportunities but he d rather remain in his solitude, Dostoevsky shows that in all respect the man has reached enlightenment (Frank 36). The problems of underground man are all concerned with what is happening to him from the inside. This man is suffering from a disease that arises from his lack of feeling completely healthy. Though the novel has depicted many medical discussions on doctors, liver problems, medicines, the real disease is emotional distress. The entire first section of the book is about how emotionally troubled the underground ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Coach Carter by Jasmine Jones As a student enters the gym doors of Smith Cotton they can see various trophies from our athletic teams, along with our JROTC National Championship banners that hang up from the walls. One can see by the quality of our gym that our sports are a main part of our school, but as one wonders on into the hallways of our school, they can see how dull they are. By the plainness of the walls, there seems to be no life, in the JROTC hallway you see the trophy cabinet full of multiple national trophies and as you venture on you get to see images of what these teams do, along with the bulletin board that shows newspaper articles of the success of the program. But as you continue to walk toward the other side of the classroom, one can only see some bulletin boards that do not have many things on them except for some advertising. Just by observing this, a new student can see that our school has a great deal to do with sports, but what they cannot see is how well this school performs academically. As we walk down the halls you rarely see a student s work displayed. So one can assume what James Coleman thinks to be correct, that altogether, the trophy case would suggest to the innocent visitor that he was entering an athletic club, not an educational institution. This is a dilemma among many schools that is sometime not dealt with adequately. There are some films that only display the glory of being on a team and winning championship titles; there are hardly ever any films that display ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The head of Hilton HHonors program, Jeff Diskin, recognized their competition and realized Hilton would have to raise their costs to keep up with demand. Two entirely unrelated corporations controlled Hilton brand: Hilton Hotels Corporation (HHC) and Hilton International (HIC). Customer Service: The idea of HHonors program can be seen a little bit discriminating towards majority of average customers. The idea is to pay as much attention and recognition to top clients, since the most of the profit comes out of them. And that s why, when a customer is interacting with a member of a staff, staff members are encouraged to check the system to find the information of that specific customer to find out his/her importance to the chain. And obviously, it can be assumed that the service quality will vary too, as soon as this employee will establish the level of importance of this specific customer. Mission is to make sure that staff recognizes the best customers, shown in HHonors program database, in order to make sure that these guests get a personal welcome (p.543). • 44. Definition of Agency Theory Definition of Agency Theory A supposition that explains the relationship between principals and agents in business. Agency theory is concerned with resolving problems that can exist in agency relationships; that is, between principals (such as shareholders) and agents of the principals (for example, company executives). The two problems that agency theory addresses are: 1.) the problems that arise when the desires or goals of the principal and agent are in conflict, and the principal is unable to verify (because it difficult and/or expensive to do so) what the agent is actually doing; and 2.) the problems that arise when the principal and agent have different attitudes towards risk. Accordingly, investors will discount the prices they are willing to pay for the firm s securities. A potential agency conflict arises whenever the manager of a firm owns less than 100 percent of the firm s common stock. If a firm is a sole proprietorship managed by the owner, the owner manager will undertake actions to maximize his or her own welfare. The owner manager will probably measure utility by personal wealth, but may trade off other considerations, such as leisure and perquisites, against personal wealth. If the owner manager forgoes a portion of his or her ownership by selling some of the firm s stock to outside investors, a potential conflict of interest, called an agency conflict, arises. For example, the owner manager may prefer a more leisurely lifestyle and not work as vigorously to maximize shareholder wealth, because less of the wealth will now accrue to the owner manager. In addition, the owner manager may decide to consume more perquisites, because some of the cost of the consumption of benefits will now be borne by the outside shareholders. • 45. Reaching Mastery Should Be An Important Part Of Most... Reaching mastery should be an important part of most people s lives. There are things to consider when trying to achieve and master something important. Daniel Pink wrote the book Imagine talking about what really motivates us. I would like to focus mainly on chapter five out of the book, Mastery. The main points in this chapter Pink covers are engagement, flow and the three laws of mastery. In order to make progress there needs to be meaningful feedback, this is known as autonomy. The desire to be self directed and a lead to engagement, Only engagement can produce mastery (Pink 109). The point Daniel Pink is trying to make is that in order for success and mastery, there absolutely needs to be engagement. Humans have developed a way of doing things in which they feel programed to do tasks in routine. In order for individuals to solve difficult tasks and problems, it is important for them to be willing to experiment different ways of doing things. This is where engagement comes in because it is important and essential for people to come up with new solutions and it is the key to mastery. The amount of disengagement in work places has been costing about 300 billion dollars a year just in the United States. Pink also believes that in order to live a satisfying life we need to meet more than just simple demands, We have way too much compliance and way too little engagement (Pink 110).
