Hi everyone. I have made this presentation for my college assignment as well as for a quick revision purpose. I researched from various books and sites, and here I am. Thanks for watching :)
Shivkar Talpade: The untold story of the man who flew India's first aircraftTeamT3Cars
The Wright brothers are widely credited with making the first successful manned flight in 1903. However, there is a lesser-known claim that an Indian scholar named Shivkar Bapuji Talpade had constructed and flown an unmanned aircraft in 1895, eight years before the American duo. Is this claim true? And if so, how did he do it?
Shivkar Bapuji Talpade was born in 1864 in Mumbai, India. He was a technical instructor at the Sir JJ School of Art and a member of the Arya Samaj, a Hindu reformist movement. He had an interest in Sanskrit and ancient Indian texts, especially those related to aviation. He was inspired by the Vaimanika Shastra, a Sanskrit treatise on aeronautics attributed to Maharishi Bharadwaja, one of the ancient sages of India. The Vaimanika Shastra describes various types of aircraft and their design, construction, operation and fuel. Talpade studied this text with the help of Pandit Subbaraya Shastry, who claimed to have received it through divine revelation.

Samartha Bharat Parva is the celebration of Strength of India, observed from 25th December - the first day of Swami Vivekananda’s meditation on Rock in 1892 to 12th January – Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary.

Probable technologies behind the Vimanas described in RamayanaIJERA Editor
In Sanskrit literature there is a prominent place for Maharshi Valmiki‟s Ramayana. This is one of the very few
popular epics which are translated to multiple languages across the world. It has seven kaandas (books), five
hundred sargas (chapters) and twenty four thousand slokas (verses) in it. The vimanas are described in various
kaandas of Ramayana. It is said that Ravana had the vimana which could appear and disappear, travel long
distances with high speed based on the thought power of the master. A few years ago in the year 2013
researchers from the University of Minnesota have designed a model quadcopter which can be flown by the
human thought power. As per Prof Bin He from the University of Minnesota, for the first time humans are able
to control the flight of flying robots using just their thought sensed from non-invasive brain waves. German
scientists from the Technical University of Munich under the leadership of Professor Tim Fricke have simulated
the flight of aircraft using thought power of the pilots. This makes us think if such an aircraft with an advanced
technology like this existed once upon a time during the era of Ramayana. Carvings of Ravana‟s vimana in
Ellora cave temples help us in comparing it with that of modern Jetpack. Descriptions on seating capacity of
Pushpaka vimana help us in comparing the same with Airbus 380-800 which can accommodate 853 passengers.
Concepts of invisibility of aircrafts make us think of camouflaging techniques and stealth technology used in
modern military aircrafts. All these features help us in analyzing the probable technologies behind vimanas
described in Ramayana.
3. Shivkar Bapuji Talpade (1864–1916) and
Subbaraya Shastry were two Indian
scientists, who have constructed and flown
modern world’s first unmanned airplane in
the year 1895 to a height of 1500 feet.
Wright brothers did it in the year 1903 (8
years later) and got recognized as the
inventors of modern day aeroplane.
4. Shivkar Bapuji Talpade Shivkar Bapuji
Talpade
Born 1864
Bombay (Now Mumbai), Bombay
Presidency Died 1916 (aged 51–52)
Nationality Indian Education Sir Jamsetjee
Jeejebhoy School of Art Children Three
(two sons and one daughter)
5.
6. Shivkar flew an unmanned flying saucer which
was an advanced Vedic Mercury ion plasma ,
imploding and expanding vortex noiseless
flying machine, which could move in all
directions.
Accelerated pressurised Mercury when spun
and thus heated gives out latent energy.
Infact mercury was the fuel of many ancent
vimanas,
7.
8. Talpade’s airplane was named marutsakha
Marut meaning stream of air and Sakha
meaning friend.
This was built under the guidance of
Pandit Subbarāya Shāstry.
It was airborne for 18 minutes
9. ‘Inside the circular air frame, place the
mercury-engine with its solar mercury boiler
at the aircraft center.
By means of the power latent in the heated
mercury which sets the driving whirlwind in
motion a man sitting inside may travel a great
distance in a most marvellous manner
. Four strong mercury containers must be
built into the interior structure. When these
have been heated by fire through solar or
other sources the vimana (aircraft) develops
thunder-power through the mercury.
10.
11. The mercury propellant is first vapourised
fed into the thruster discharge chamber
ionised converted into plasma by a
combination with electrons broke down
electrically and then accelerated through
small openings in a screen to pass out of
the engine at velocities between 1200 to
3000 kilometres per minute
12.
13. Talpade was able to use his knowledge of Vaimanika
Shastra to produce sufficient thrust to lift his aircraft
1500 feet into the air!
Talpade studied and consulted a number of Vedic
treatises like Brihad Vaimanika Shastra of Maharishi
Bharadwaja Vimanachandrika of Acharya Narayan Muni
Viman yantra of Maharish Shownik Yantra Kalp by
Maharishi Garg Muni Viman Bindu of Acharya
Vachaspati and Vimana Gyanarka Prakashika of
Maharishi Dhundiraj’.
This gave him confidence that he can build an aircraft
with mercury engines. One essential factor in the
creation of these Vedic aircraft was the timing of the
Suns Rays or Solar energy (as being now utilised by
NASA) when they were most effective to activate the
mercury ions of the engine
14. One day in 1895 (unfortunately the actual
date is not mentioned in the Kesari
newspaper of Pune which covered the
event) before an curious scholarly
audience headed by the famous Indian
judge/ nationalist/ Mahadeva Govin-da
Ranade and H H Sayaji Rao Gaekwad
Talpade had the good fortune to see his
un manned aircraft named as ‘Marutsakthi’
take off, fly to a height of 1500 feet and
then fall down to earth.
15. But this success of an Indian scientist was
not liked by the Imperial rulers. Warned by
the British Government
The Maharaja of Baroda stopped helping
Talpade. It is said that the remains of the
Marutsakthi were sold to ‘foreign parties’
by the relatives of Talpade in order to
salvage whatever they can out of their
loans to him
16. But his efforts to make known the greatness of
Vedic Shastras was recognised by Indian
scholars, who gave him the title of Vidya
Prakash Pra-deep.
Talpade passed away in 1916 un-honoured, in
his own country.
As the world rightly honours the Wright
Brothers for their achievements, we should
think of Talpade, who utilised the ancient
knowledge of Sanskrit texts, to fly an aircraft,
eight years before his foreign counterparts.
