Archytas of Tarentum created the first crude rocket in 300 BC by filling a wooden bird with steam to propel it around a room. Over 300 years later, Hero of Alexandria created a similar steam-powered device called an aeolipile. In the 11th century, the Chinese accidentally discovered gunpowder while trying to create an elixir of immortality, which they began using for fireworks and weapons. Modern rocketry developed from improvements to fireworks in the 16th century and experiments with liquid-fueled rockets in the early 20th century, culminating in the first satellite launch by the Soviet Union in 1957.
