Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is a protein that plays an important role in the development of the nervous system. During development, Shh signaling helps establish dorsal-ventral polarity in the neural tube and patterns cell types along this axis. Shh is produced in the floor plate and notochord and forms concentration gradients that determine cell fates in the spinal cord and brain. Alterations to Shh signaling can lead to neural developmental defects and craniofacial abnormalities.
