When the sound waves hit interfaces between tissues, some of the sound wave is reflected back to the transducer. The time it takes for the echoes to return is used to create an image showing the depth of the tissues and organs. Different frequencies are used depending on the depth needed to image. Doppler ultrasound can also measure the speed and direction of blood flow. The ultrasound machine processes the echo data and displays the images in real-time on a monitor.

Protable ultrasound
This document provides a final report on a project to develop a portable and affordable ultrasound device using a parallelized implementation of the quickhull algorithm on an FPGA. The quickhull algorithm was first implemented in Scheme for validation and then in Verilog. It was parallelized and optimized in Modelsim. The goal was to create a supplemental ultrasound device that could be easily carried to environments without full medical facilities. Previous related work on smartphone-based and laptop-sized ultrasound devices is discussed. The project approach involves using a transducer to collect ultrasound data, passing data through filters and thresholds to the quickhull hardware to generate convex hulls and create an image on a display. Ultrasound does not pass well through bone, and is scattered by air ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) – A philosophy of radiation use based on keeping exposure as low as possible. How Does Ultrasound Work? – Piezoelectric Effect Image Credit: Eric Shappell Loyola ‘13 When electricity is applied to piezoelectric crystals, the vibrations produce sound waves that travel outward. The waves hit objects and bounce back to the piezoelectric crystals, and the mechanical energy produced from the vibration of the crystal is converted into electrical energy. The ultrasound machine calculates the time it takes for sound waves to travel back to the probe and produces a gray-scale image on the screen.
