The document provides information for attendees of the Affiliate Summit East 2019 conference, including details about networking opportunities, sessions, speakers, parties and events, instructions for using the conference app and etiquette, and information on the next Affiliate Summit conference in January. Attendees are given tips on making the most of their time at the event by getting involved in sessions, networking, and using the conference materials and tools provided.
Welcome to Affiliate Summit East 2019 – I’m Shawn Collins, Co-CEO of Affiliate Summit and I co-founded the conference back in 2003.
While you are here you will likely be neglecting somebody back home, because you are immersed in an overwhelming 72 hours of networking and education. Get ahead of being in trouble at home and text that person or people now and tell them you are thinking about them.
You should have a copy of FeedFront magazine from when you checked in. Read the articles from people in the industry giving advice on a wide range of topics. And be sure to read my editor’s note on how working here in the city on 9/11 was a catalyst for me starting the conference with my partner, Missy Ward.
We’ve got free wifi all around the conference area – check your badge for the login.
I’ve found from a couple decades attending conferences that it’s easier to meet people when you are with people. If you don’t know anybody here, there are lots of networking activities going on. Take advantage to meet somebody to go around with to booths and parties and other conference happenings.
There is a group on Facebook for networking with other conference attendees – go there and search for Affiliate Summit East 2019 and join.
There is a networking lounge open during the conference on the 6th floor – go there for meetings or to meet people you don’t know, yet.
Speaking of networking. I am one of those people who airdrops pictures of their dogs when they board flights. That got me thinking that you could network with AirDrop – so go and pick a photo of you, put a call to action and share it with people at the conference – it has a range of like 30 feet, so they are likely conference attendees.
The Meet Market is the most busy the first few hours – the same goes for the exhibit hall on the first day. I’d suggest hitting Meet Market tables after 4 and the exhibit hall on Tuesday, so you have more time to chat and make things happen.
Get the Affiliate Summit app for Apple or Android phones to network, create a custom schedule, and more.
Conference badges hang down in a sort of inconvenient spot on women, so if you walk up and look at her chest to see her name it could get awkward. Instead, scope out her name from 5-10 feet away before you approach so you don’t get branded as the conference creeper.
We’ve got keynotes each day – please see the app or conference program for more details.
You’ll have lots of business cards handed out and given to you, so it’s a good idea to have a plan to manage them. What I do is to pick one pocket as the inbox and another as the outbox, so I don’t get things mixed up and can efficiently exchange cards.
Slides for the sessions are up at Slideshare.net – check them out to view online or download to follow along at sessions.
We rely on your feedback – each future conference changes a little based on what we hear from you. Don’t worry – we have thick skin. We want to make this the most useful conference it can be for you.
You are in the company of thousands of marketers from dozens of countries, so don’t go liking nonsense on Facebook and posting comments about funny dog videos on Reddit while you are here. Unless you need to be on your phone or laptop for work, please put it away and be present to meet all of these amazing people.
While you’re here and even afterwards I would encourage you to share your experiences, opinions, pictures, etc. on Twitter with the hashtag to network with others.
The same goes for Instagram.
Most people won’t do this, which is exactly why you should – when you get back home get yourself some thank you cards and write follow ups to the people you met here. Then drop them in the mail. Assuming you have their correct address from business cards or elsewhere you can expect somewhere around a 100% open rate.
Awin and Shareasale have a party tonight for attendees – hopefully you RSVP’d already, because it is maxed out now.
Tomorrow is Affiliate Ball and you can still RSVP at affiliateball.com
There are lots of opportunities to have fun. But remember why you are here and keep things in check. If you are out all night and miss meetings you are not a rock star, you are a jackass.
We hope to see y’all at the upcoming Affiliate Summits in Singapore, Las Vegas, and Amsterdam.
Thank you to the Affiliate Summit East 2019 sponsors.
Contact me at any of these places if you have questions. And finally, I want you to leave here with at least one new connection – please turn to a stranger to your left or right or back or front and ask them what they are doing tonight? Maybe you’ll find somebody to grab dinner with.
