SaaS and Cloud applications have been a huge help to businesses across the world, enabling organisations to be more productive and reducing the workload for IT departments providing complex systems – however, there is a hitch. Even though they can help individuals and departments, these systems, if they are not known about or managed, can cause serious problems for compliance, security, and bring unexpected costs.
These types of applications which are unknown to the IT department are often referred to as Shadow IT. Finding what SaaS / Cloud apps are in play is not an easy task as there are over 14,000 of them. Understanding more about what they do, how much they cost and who is using them is something every IT manager needs to get to grips with.
Far too often, legacy systems force companies to make decisions based off of history and without the assistance of today’s technology. Self Service Cloud Operations: Safely Delegate the Management of your Cloud ...Rundeck
Running Operations is not an easy job, especially these days. Ops teams have to ensure excellent user experiences, resolve incidents quickly and help developers stay productive. Yet at the same time, there is also the need to maintain systems security and keep downtime to a minimum.
While advances in cloud computing have helped address some of these challenges, many organizations find it difficult to leverage the cloud at scale because of bottlenecks that form around repetitive tasks, such as developers having to wait for provisioning infrastructure. Despite having access to abundant cloud resources, these speedbumps often make it difficult to achieve team objectives.
Join this talk to learn:
How to safely delegate the management of your cloud deployment (to developers and other end users) with self-service operations.
How to create powerful runbooks with guardrails that leverage existing scripting languages, infrastructure, and tools to remove bottlenecks that form around repetitive tasks.
Strategies for getting started with self-service.

The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.

Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
18. These will differentiate you in the
new age• Mindset
– Quality
– Better understand your user
– Embrace new technologies to help testing
– Seek opportunity to collaborate with your team
– Empathise
– Willingness to coach others and be coached
• Technical Skills
– Test oriented architecture and data analysis
– Test framework or automation tool
– Stub and/or service virtualisation
Agile seems to be a good way of delivering these systems with short cycles.
Big impact to the way we test - not just deliver in shorter cycles, but also collaborative, even do developer’s job!
In the world of developing products (mobile or service) using agile methdologies, Quality is the responsibility of the entire team – not just tester, test lead, or test manager
You already have the skills drive the quality conversation – clear, valuable requirements and acceptance tests. Ask developers - how do we test it?
It’s a matter of making sure that we adopt a quality mindset rather than a testing mindset.
Quality is – what the customer wants, not just whether code works
This requires you to understand what the business is doing (hence what the customer wants)
Talk to users
Testers now need to focus on a Test Oriented Architecture that enables us to collect and identify the right data signal.
Testers need to create tools to run the tests in production, monitor the data signal, and analyse this signal.
Whether scanning the production data signal or firing synthetic transactions, the tests we write now look a lot like monitors. Something Ops has been doing all along. The value test brings is in moving these monitors from heartbeats and simple scenarios to high context user affecting scenarios.
TDD approach – once you have acceptance criteria, you need to help the team to write tests before writing code.
There are plenty of tools – google it.
See what you have in your company – may be under-used licenses?
To code or not to code – it depends on your team dynamic. But if you work in an oiled agile team, you are expected to function just like any developer (and they are just like any tester). My view is knowing how code will be better for your career.
One of the key issues with cloud and mobile is connectedness. You can’t test integration or end-to-end until you have systems developed. Stubbing is more important than ever.
Again, plenty of tools on the market - IBM, CA, Parasoft, etc.
Keep an eye on new technologies and understand the implications of them
e.g. NoSQL database (not so new, but hey it was not popularised until recently), wearable technology
Subscribe to news feeds
Avoid handing off work
Spend time with developers – talk about defects instead of just bug report (even if it’s just 2 minutes)
Spend time with analysts/product owners to clarify functionality
Work with/manage your boss - they want to know status.
As testing professionals, we’re trained to look for flaws. Hold back criticism when people tell you their ideas.
Sometimes it’s how you said it, not just what you say
Make your peers feel important even if they made a mistake in something (or may not be the most lovable person)
Be mentor for others around the quality area
Learn from others to expand your knowledge
Seek out feedbacks, even from team mates and more junior people.
