Phrasal Verbs with: out, up, together, on, down, through
Reading
Read the dialog. Then discuss the questions.
Derek: Thanks for backing me up in the presentation you guys! I seriously think the
deal would have fallen through if you hadn’t given all your support!
Janeth: We were great, weren’t we? I almost blurted that out as things were
winding up, Ha ha! It’s a good thing I have some self-control. I wanted
this deal so badly.
Derek: Now that we closed this deal, I seriously think business will pick up once
word gets out.
Masha: I’m so happy they didn’t turn us down. We’re going to have to celebrate.
It’s time to stock up on champagne!
Derek: Sounds good. Maybe Carl can set something fun up, but then we have to
knuckle down and show them what we can do.
Carl: Certainly. I’ll put something together for tomorrow night.
1. When someone blurts something out, do they think before they speak?
2. When someone backs someone up, are they supportive?
3. Do people work hard when they knuckle down?
What Does It Mean?
Listen and write the numbers 1-14 next to the correct statements.

Matching
Draw a line to match the phrasal verbs statements with their sentence “definitions.”
1. She backed down on the agreement. A. That circumstance doesn’t make
sense.
2. Everybody is getting along. B. In summary, she needs to work
hard to succeed.
3. I came across as being shy. C. He’s not who he pretends to be.
4. His life is looking up. D. He had a lot of emotional pain
when that happened.

Practice
Work with a partner. Take turns asking each other the questions below.
Answer with yes or no. Explain each answer.
1. Majid said he was confirming the proposal. Did he back down?
2. Lizzy is still bothered by her loss of friends. Did she get over it yet?
3. Chun Li calmly mentioned she was angry with me. Did she blow up at
me?
4. At the interview, Sofia impressed the interviewers and got the job.
Did she come across as the right person for the position?
5. Life boils down to love. Can the meaning of life be summarized as
being love?
Writing
Write the correct phrasal verb into each sentence. Pay attention to the verb
tense.
1. It all ___________________________ the date when everyone can come.
2. We knew she was mad when she _________________________ at us the other
day.
3. Things aren’t ___________________________ for the police officer who shot
the man in the back.
4. I stand my ground. I won’t ___________________________ on my views.
5. Why, Why! Why do you always ___________________________ my ex? Get
over it!
Statements & Responses
Write statements for each phrasal verb on one line. Leave the second line blank.
Examples:

Discussion
Many phrasal verbs have more than one meaning! Read the phrasal verbs. Can you
think of other meanings for any of the phrasal verbs?
Dialog Writing
Get a picture from your teacher. Work with a partner and write a dialog using 5 –
7 of the phrasal verbs.
