This document provides an overview of regional food hubs and their role in connecting local farms to institutions. It defines a regional food hub as an integrated food distribution system that coordinates production and the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution and marketing of locally or regionally produced food. Examples of existing, emerging and nonprofit food hubs in California are described. The benefits of networking regional food hubs include supporting sustainable regional food systems and increasing opportunities for small and mid-sized farms. Challenges around definitions of terms are discussed and solutions of transparency, traceability and education are proposed.
