SHARING AMOUNTS INTO
RATIOS
Example 1:
Divide $250 in
the ratio 2:3
• Add: Find the total parts by adding the individual
parts in the ratio
• 3+2=5 parts
Divide: Divide the amount by the total number of
parts to find the size of 1 part
• 250/5= $50
And
Multiply: Multiply the Values in the ratio by the size
of one part
Now, 2 🇽 50= $100 and 3 🇽 50= $150
• So, $250 is divided into $100 and $150 respectively
METHOD 2
How to Solve:
Take each part in the ratio, divide it by the whole and multiply by the given amount that
you want to share.
There are two parts in the ratio 2 and 3. The whole is 5 (2+3)
Example 2: Share 30 mangoes in the ratio 3:7
• Add: Find the total parts by adding the individual parts in the ratio
• 3+7=10 parts
Divide: Divide the amount by the total number of parts to find the size of 1 part
• 30/10= 3
And
Multiply: Multiply the Values in the ratio by the size of one part
•
Now, 3 🇽 3= 9 mangoes and 7 🇽 3= 21 mangoes
So the 30 mangoes were shared in the ratio 3:7 and one person would get 9 mangoes while the
other gets 21 mangoes
METHOD 2
• How to Solve:
• Take each part in the ratio,
divide it by the whole and
multiply by the given amount
that you want to share.
• There are two parts in the ratio
3 and 7. The whole is 10 (3+7)
EXAMPLE 3:
Share $20
between Tom,
Tony and
David in the
ratio 2:5:3
IN THE RATIO, THE 2 REPRESENTS TOM’S
SHARE, THE 5 REPRESENTS TONY’S SHARE
AND THE 3 REPRESENTS DAVID’S SHARE
Add: Find the total parts by adding the individual parts
in the ratio
• 2+3+5=10 parts
Divide: Divide the amount by the total number of parts
to find the size of 1 part
• 20/10= $2
And
Multiply: Multiply the Values in the ratio by the size of
one part
Tom’s Share= 2 🇽 2= $4 Tony’s Share= 2🇽 5= $10 and
David’s Share= 2 x 3= $6
METHOD 2
Share $20 between
Tom, Tony and David
in the ratio 2:5:3
• How to Solve:
• Take each part in the ratio,
divide it by the whole and multiply
by the given amount that you
want to share.
• There are three parts in the ratio
2, 5 and 3. The whole is 10
(2+5+3)
