Female Genital Mutilation is cultural practice that seeks to control women and girls. Because of the health risks that plague the practice of FGM, cultures should seek alternate cultural practices to celebrate womanhood.
Widows’ Perception of Widowhood Hardships in Patriarchal Society of Benue Sta...AJHSSR Journal
The study investigated widows’ perception of widowhood hardships in patriarchal society. The
study was conducted in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria; and adopted survey design.
Two research questions and one null hypothesis guided the study. A sample of 210 widows, comprising 123
widows each with male children, and 87 widows with only female children, was selected randomly. The
instrument was developed by two professionals, one in Sociology of Education and another in Measurement and
Evaluation. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS IBM version 20. Research questions were answered using
means and standard deviations, while the null hypothesis was tested at P<0.05 level of significance, using t-test.
The study found that widows are often accused of practising witchcraft and for being responsible for the killing
of their husbands. Widows are among the most neglected set of people, and are deprived of their husbands’
incomes. In addition, they are ejected from their matrimonial homes, and also forced to marry their husbands’
brothers. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended that Government should enact laws that prevent
the male counterparts from falsely accusing widows of witchcraft practices and for being responsible for the
killing of their husbands. Also, the national government, non-governmental organizations and wealthy
individuals should provide widows with economic support to alleviate their sufferings.

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) has been performed in various forms for millennia and involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. In this systematic review we addressed harm occurring during the cutting or alteration modifi cation process and the short-term period
The statutory guidance 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' published in April 2014, asks schools to ensure that they raise awareness of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Staff should be aware of FGM and it should be included in your school's safeguarding policy where the different types of abuse and neglect are set out.
Female Genital Mutilation occurs mainly in Africa and to a lesser extent, in the Middle East and Asia. Although it is believed by many to be a religious issue, it is a cultural practice. There are no health benefits.
Communities particularly affected by FGM in the UK include girls from:
Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Sudan,
Egypt, Nigeria, Eritrea, Yemen, Indonesia and Afghanistan.
In the UK, FGM tends to occur in areas with larger populations of communities who practise FGM, such as first-generation immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. These areas include:
London, Cardiff, Manchester, Sheffield, Northampton,
Birmingham, Oxford, Crawley, Reading, Slough and Milton Keynes.
In England and Wales, 23,000 girls under 15 could be at risk of FGM.
Key issues:
Not a religious practice
Occurs mostly to girls aged from 5 - 8 years old; but up to around 15
Criminal offence in UK since 1985
Offence since 2003 to take girls abroad
Criminal penalties include up to 14 years in prison
Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision, is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. The practice is found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and within communities from countries in which FGM is common.
This presentation describes all the aspects of the FGM (types effects prevention)etc .

Over the past two decades, there has been increasing recognition that runaway and homeless youth (RHY) constitute a vulnerable population that faces a multitude of problems while away from home and, often, difficulties of equal magnitude in the homes they have left. Many of these youth are thought to have been victimized by sexual abuse and to have left home as a means of escaping abusive families. Although risky behaviors are now well documented, relatively little is known about the scope and prevalence of sexual abuse among the families of origin of RHY, the extent to which such abuse may exceed that of comparable youth in the general population, and the role that sexual abuse plays in the youth‘s decision to leave home. The overall purpose of the study was to begin to delineate the scope of the problem, to stimulate further discussion, and to make recommendations concerning research and policy. This report presents the results of each of these initiatives, synthesizes findings, and presents recommendations. The directed study aims to look into the issues related to sexual abuse in adolescents and recommend remedial and preventive measures.

The invisible People
Transgender people are individuals who experience discomfort with their biological male or female gender. The term transgender is used to refer to a broad range of nonconforming gender identities. Their gender identity and expression are different from those that society expects, especially with it comes to binary rules. Trans people are the “invisible people” in the world that get unrecognized. It is estimated that there are 15 million trans people globally. Due to the fact that trans people undergo a transformation that is not understood by most of society, they face discrimination and hate their entire life.
Transgender people in our society are also a population that are at a high risk for health problems. I will discuss how a high population of transgender individuals have to engage in survival sex. I will also focus on risky prostitution and sex work throughout the world in the transgender community. The high risk and percentage of HIV is growing within the community due to prostitution. I will also discuss further on how discrimination leads to these acts due to being denied employment and poverty.
The difficulties of meeting basic needs such as finding a job, housing and healthcare are due to others hating against them. Stigma and discrimination are faced on a community level and global. Society feels as though trans people are a threat and do not demonstrate the patriarchal idea of the “norm”. With that being said, many people are not comfortable and do not understand the condition that trans people are in so they turn them down in the workplace. According to The Fair Housing Act , discrimination because a person fails to confirm gender stereotypes is sex discrimination under federal civil right law. These laws protect sale of housing or condominiums and rental housing on a private market. Still, there is no national housing law that prohibits discrimination.
According to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS), transgender people are four times as likely to have an income under $10,000 and they are twice as likely to be unemployed as the typical person. More than 90% of trans people have either been denied employment , harassed or have gotten fired due to being that they are this has led many to not being able to turn to regular employment for income. Economically disadvantaged transgender people are forced to turn to homelessness and eventually engage in unprotected survival sex.
Survival sex is a global and life threatening issue for those who have to survive on the street. As a consequence of vulnerability to violence within communities, a large percentage of runaway or abandoned youth are transgender, lesbian, bisexual and gay. Pimps recruit those who are transgender due to the fact that they know it is easy to maintain control by manipulating them into believing that the pimp accepts them. Surgery to transform cost thousands of dollars. It is also expensi.
Perceptions of the Social Consequences of Rape in EzinihitteMbaise, Imo State...AJHSSR Journal
Rape is a criminal act of obtaining sexual consent or submission forcefully or by use of threat.
In many places, the scar of rape is perceived to be permanent and the female victims are usually stigmatized.
The paper examined the perceptions of the social consequences of rape in Ezinihitte-Mbaise, Imo State, Nigeria.
The paper is anchored on feminist theory, Marxian theory and rational choice theory. The sample size and study
participants were 324 adult residents of the area. They were selected using multi-stage sampling procedure and
purposive sampling technique. Questionnaire and In-Depth Interviews (IDIs) were the quantitative and
qualitative instruments of data collection used in the study. Quantitative data were analyzed using Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and interpreted in tables of frequency/percentage distributions.
Transcription of the recorded electronic and field note interviews provided data for the qualitative analysis. The
result amongst others revealed that 20.3% of the respondents were of the view that stigmatization; withdrawal
from social activities (18.6%), delay in getting married (25.2%) were notable social consequences of rape.
However, the paper concluded that stigmatization or possible avoidance of marrying rape victims sustains the
trauma and would also serve as a secondary victimization. It therefore recommended amongst others that
government in partnership with NGO's should embark on adequate sensitization campaigns in rural areas to
discourage stigmatization and thereby reorientate many on the wrong notion that rape scar remains with the
victims for life. Females should avoid walking unaccompanied in the night and visiting of acquaintances at
lonely places.
Sexual violence occurs throughout the world Available data suggest
that in some countries nearly one in four women may experience
sexual violence by an intimate partner and up to one third of
adolescent girls report their first sexual experience as being forced
Sexual violence has a profound impact on physical and mental health
As well as causing physical injury, it is associated with an increased
risk of a range of sexual and reproductive health problems, with both
immediate and long term consequences

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
1. Sexual Violence & Exploitation in Indonesia Created by April WS 420 September 2nd2010
2. Introduction My name is April and I’m a junior here at MSUM. I am majoring in Psychology and one day I would like to become an eating disorder psychologist. In my free time I enjoy spending time at the lake, water skiing and photography.
3. Introduction The country I selected for this presentation is Indonesia. I will talk a little about female genital mutilation, trafficking, rape, prostitution and sexual abuse.
4. Sexual Violence & Exploitation Trafficking is currently defined by the United Nations as the forced, coerced, fraudulent or deceitful entry into prostitution, entry by abduction, or entry into such work under age 18 years. Trafficking in persons for purposes of sexual exploitation, termed sex trafficking in this report, is considered to pose tremendous risks for health ranging from trauma and poor mental health to sexually transmitted infection (STI), including HIV.
5. Sexually Transmitted Diseases The prevalence of HIV among trafficking survivors was 5.7%. 1 in 7 trafficking survivors tested for at least one of 4 sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, were infected. Slightly less than half of sex trafficking survivors were exploited under the age of 18 years.
6. Genital Mutilation Most females who have undergone mutilation live in 28 African countries. The guarantee of virginity and fidelity to the husband are the motivational factors sometimes cited as reasons for the practice. One of the most frequent explanations for Female Genital Mutilation is that it is a local cultural custom and women are often unwilling to change this habit because of its long lasting use. Also, people using this kind of practice often ignore the true implications and the severe risks to health involved.
7. Current Status In Indonesia women continue to be discriminated against today. However, there is a movement for the improvement of the status of women and a drive for a more gender equal society.
