Demurrage, detention, and per diem refer to fees charged by carriers and warehouses for containers or equipment that remain at a facility beyond the allotted free time. Demurrage is charged by shipping lines for use of their containers, detention can refer to charges by truckers for excess loading/unloading time or storage fees charged by carriers, and per diem is charged by carriers for use of equipment after it leaves the terminal. Importers and exporters can avoid these fees by clearing cargo on time, requesting extended free periods for large volumes, scheduling pickups in advance, and having facilities prepared to promptly load/unload shipments.
Commercial shipping began with Phoenician merchants in the Mediterranean. In the 1600s-1650s, the Dutch led in shipping activity. In 1930, Malcolm McLean invented shipping containers, modifying truck bodies to create the first containers. On April 26th, the first container ship, the Ideal-X, sailed from New Jersey to Texas. Today, over 90% of international trade by volume occurs by sea using container ships. The containerization revolution led by McLean made shipping more cost effective, reduced damage and theft, and increased flexibility.

Petroleum is the main source of energy in both Indonesia and Australia, making up 30% and 36% of total energy consumption respectively. Indonesia relies on cars and motor scooters for transportation while Australia relies more on cars, with public transportation more common in major cities. Water pollution is Indonesia's main pollution problem while air pollution affects Australia more. The average daily water usage in Indonesia was 38.4L per person in 1993, much lower than Australia's 340L currently. Both countries could benefit from developing alternative energy sources like solar, wind and hydro power to reduce their large ecological footprints.

The Captain is the highest ranking officer on board a ship who is ultimately responsible for the safe navigation of the ship and crew. They oversee all operations of the ship and are employed by the ship's owner. A ship pilot only has authority within a designated pilotage district and boards the ship to provide navigation instructions to the Captain. The pilot directs the Captain on the proper course and speed but does not assume command of the ship. Pilots are typically employed by a port authority or pilotage company rather than the ship's owner.

5. The Captain (or Master) of the ship is
at the top of all the ranks, holds the
highest post of the ship’s crew, and is
accountable to the owner of that ship.
He shoulders immense responsibilities
and presides over the activities
occurring on board.
7. Chief Officer/ first mate
Chief officer occupies the second responsible position after the
Captain of the vessel. He acts as the leader of the deck department
and mainly engages in the cargo affairs. He also supervises the
vessel’s crew and looks after the various deck operations. The Chief
Mate prioritizes the security and safe functioning of the vessel, and
is concerned about the welfare of crew and passengers (if passenger
ships) on board. Additionally, the correct working of the hull,
the accommodation section, the cargo gearing, the security
appliances and the fire prevention equipment is managed by the
Chief Officer.
10. Second officer/second mate
He is the primary officer behind the navigational
section of the vessel (Navigation chart preparation

11.
12.
13. Third officer
He is basically employed with the security
measures on board, and therefore is greatly

firefighting equipment, first aid and other security measures. Special
training is meted out to the Deck Cadets under the maritime law, and they
prove their worth in the navigational section, besides dealing with the
cargo. A newly appointed Deck Cadet needs to report to the Chief Officer
of the ship, from time to time. A Cadet must observe and lend a helping
hand, and try to gain as much of knowledge as possible. His ineligibility

the engine fitting jobs.

capacity of the ship (measured in gross tonnage) and
the speciality of the ship (cargo or passenger). The

adeptness and ability to perform well as a seaman
before finally acknowledging him as an able seaman.
24.
25.
26. Ordinary Seaman

department. An OS is usually busy with tasks such as buffing, scaling,
