built the Wiryeseong defense complex in what is now Seoul. The stone walls were about 6 meters

capital. In the 11th century, the ruler of the Goryeo dynasty built a palace complex in the area of
Seoul known as the Southern Capital.
• From the end of World War II, after the Korean Peninsula was divided into two states, Seoul became
the capital of the Republic of Korea , and Pyongyang became the capital of the Democratic People's
Republic of Korea . During the Korean War, Seoul was briefly occupied by the communist occupiers,
and the capital of South Korea was moved to Busan .
• Seoul was almost completely destroyed during the Korean War. After the war, however, it was quickly
rebuilt with the help of Western countries, mainly the United States.

Hwanung, the younger son of the Heaven Lord Hwanin, wants to
come down to earth and rule the people. Hwanin chooses a place
for his son, assigns him an entourage and gives him symbols of
power: three heavenly seals. Hwanung descends to the top of

bear who is turned into a woman is flooding. The tigress, on the
other hand, fails the test and remains in her form. Then,
transformed into a female, the bear asks Hwanung for offspring.

heaven and earth follows. From this union is born Tangun, lord of

• This is the oldest written Korean myth, it comes from a
Chinese collection from the 1st century CE. It is the story of
the founder of the Kogurjo state. According to this myth,
King Kymwa met the daughter of Habek, the spirit of the
river, seduced and abandoned by Hemosu, the spirit of
heaven. Kymwa took her to his palace, and there she gave
birth to a large egg. The King tried many ways to destroy the
egg. When that failed, he gave them back to his mother.
Then Dzumong emerged from the egg. He learned the art of
war very quickly, which caused the envy of the king's sons.
They decided to kill Dzumong, but he managed to escape.
When he and his friends reached the river, he shouted that
he was the son of heaven and the grandson of the river. Then
the fish and turtles created a bridge over which Dzumong
and his companions crossed to the other side of the river.
When Dzumong reached Dzolbondz, he built a royal
residence there, established the foundations of a new
