This translucent stream, flowing through
central Seoul, offers a walking trail ideal for
strolling at night. The tasteful and subdued
lighting along the stream illuminates the city’s

can also enjoy laser light shows at the Digital

Sejong Center for the
Performing Arts
Located off Gwanghwamun Square, the
Sejong Center is Korea’s top performing arts
venue open every day of the year, offering a
wide range of shows. The Center has a total of
three state-of-the-art concert halls, including
a Grand Theater that can seat up to 3,000
guests on three floors. An ensemble affiliated
with Seoul City (Traditional Music Orchestra,
Seoul City Dance, Opera, Orchestra, Chorus,
and etc.) offers an ongoing series of highquality performances at regular intervals.

The Stories of King Sejong and
Admiral Yi Sunsin
This exhibition hall showcases the lives and achievements
of two of Korea’s greatest figures: King Sejong, who
oversaw the invention of hangeul, the Korean alphabet, and
Yi Sunsin, the nation’s most celebrated naval commander.
Information is freely available in five languages: Korean,
English, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish. There are also
free hands-on programs for international tourists, including
card-making, letter-writing, and writing names in hangeul.

Pub of the Blue Star
This pub is located in a remodeled hanok
(traditional Korean home). Worn wallpaper,
old movie posters and antiques placed
here and there create a unique atmosphere.
The pub serves makgeolli (rice liquor) and
schisandra wine made using traditional
brewing methods from a farm house in
Gangwon-do. Sundubu (soft tofu) and jeon
(pancakes) are popular side dishes.

Around the Sejong Center

This bar, serving traditional spirits, is popular
for its pine dongdongju (rice liquor similar to
makgeolli), made using freshly-ground pine
needles. The interior is decorated like an oldstyle Korean home where guests sit on the
floor. There are also traditional Korean musical
instruments such as gayageum and daebuk on
display that further add to the vintage décor;
sometimes the owner even plays them for the
guests!

The Sejong Center is located near several
government buildings, the National Museum
of Korean Contemporary History, and several
newspapers. Catering to the many white
collar workers to be found here is a selection
of excellent restaurants in the alleys behind
the Center. Although some may look shabby
from the outside, they attract long lines during
meal hours filled with workers waiting to eat
kimchijjigae (kimchi stew), sundaeguk (blood
sausage soup), gulgukbap (oyster soup),
budaejjigae (army base stew) and the like.

This bar-restaurant serves traditional Korean
rice wines produced by the brewer
Kooksoondang. Menu items include
luxurious rice wine (or ale) and makgeolli
cocktails, served with traditional Korean

There was a full moon over the Cheonggyecheon Stream, where many
different people from different backgrounds were passing by and
enjoying one of the last warm nights of the year. There were office
employees who had come here to relax after a busy day. Children were
playing near the water accompanied by their parents, who were busy
worrying they didn’t fall into the gushing stream. Beautiful young
couples, completely in love, were engulfed within their own universe and
not paying attention to anyone besides themselves. Birds were flying in
the evening sky and even the fish could be seen in the lucid waters.

After midnight is when Dongdaemun Market
really comes to life, a time when business
seems to pick up in earnest. Because
Dongdaemun is the epicenter of Korea’s fashion
industry, any item related to fashion can be
purchased here. In fact, there are so many largescale shopping complexes in the area that it is
better to pick out one or two suitable to one’s
tastes rather than trying to see all of them.
The area is packed with simple meal choices
for late-night snacking, including topokki and
shish-kebabs. When shopping begins to take
its toll, then a massage at a 24-hour
jjimjilbang (Korean spa) or watching a movie at
an all-night movie theater is recommended.

(Whole chicken and noodles)

This is a type of baeksuk (boiled meat dish)
featuring an entire chicken boiled together
with potatoes, spring onions, and tteok (rice
cakes). In general, once all of the chicken
has been eaten, hand-kneaded noodles are
cooked in the remaining broth as a second
course. Koreans also like to add garlic sauce,
kimchi and other seasonings to the soup. The
restaurant Jinokhwa Halmae, open since 1978,
was included in the Michelin guide for Korea.

This canteen has received much fanfare over
the years, and is located on the basement
floor of Jeil Pyeong Hwa Market. It is highly
popular, with lines of people waiting to eat
its signature noodles with spicy and sour

Synonymous with easy-to-eat street food.
Popular with Koreans of all ages, topokki (spicy
soft rice cake), eomuk (fish cake) and grilled
shish-kebabs can be spotted frequently on
Seoul’s streets, where topokki is often eaten
together with eomuk soup. Grilled shish-kebabs
of chicken, rice cakes or dongaseu and other
options with spicy and sweet gochujang (Korean
chili paste) are especially recommended.

Straight from a 4-hour flight we are all tired and starving. So we started our
night with a street food stall hopping in and around the Dongdaemun night
market area. We had topokki (Spicy Rice Cake), one of the staple Korean
street foods. Rice cakes cooked in chili paste. It was so good and perfect for
the weather. Coming from a tropical country makes us limited to winter
clothes but it was never a problem because Dongdaemun night market has
the answers to all we need. Open til 4am the next morning, you’ll be going
gaga over the hundreds of shops to choose from.

beauty-related goods or services. Hongdae’s clubs and live cafés, Seoul’s mecca
for Indie music, are a must-visit. There are

culture. During bulgeum, the Korean slang

All the latest hip hop, electronic and house
music will be spinning for dancers all through

and small live music clubs where visitors
can enjoy Indie music. Musicians active in
this area are naturally seen as being “from
Hongdae,” and are for the most part highlyindividual artists offering an alternative to
the mainstream. Many are also independent
songwriters who perform their own songs.
Visitors to Hongdae can at any time enjoy
high-quality live performances along with
impassioned fans brimming with excitement.


Su Noraebang
This unique karaoke bar (noraebang) has
often been featured in international media.
The entire façade of the building is glass,
allowing passersby to take a sneak peek at
those inside, who sing and dance vigorously
as if they were on stage. For this reason, Su
Noraebang has since become a significant
tourist attraction. There are five branches of
Su Noraebang just in Hongdae alone.

The first time I visited Gangnam, it was immediately obvious that this
place is where it all happens. You could spend a whole day just walking
around Coex Mall, nevermind the tree-lined shops and galleries of
Garosu-gil, the department stores of Apgujeong, or the boutiques of
Cheongdam. Of course night time is when it really comes to life – when
there’s a restaurant and bar for every taste and a hundred new people to
meet each night. They say ‘Gangnam’ means ‘south of the river’, but it’s
definitely the center of the action for me!
