CNN once stated that sleeping in Seoul is for losers.
With so much to do in Korea's capital after sundown,
they argued, hitting the pillow could only be a waste of time.
For Seoul is a new world at night: as its glittering lights pop on to
hail the onset of evening, a whole other urban landscape awakes
where shining shopping malls, steamy saunas, and lively clubs
and bars can be enjoyed round the clock. Relish the refreshing
breeze while cycling along the riverbanks at night, and when
hunger calls, enjoy a generous and delicious late night meal.
Seoul — the city that never sleeps — shows a beautiful new side
at night, and is full of shimmering and mesmerizing lights.

This bar, serving traditional spirits, is popular
for its pine dongdongju (rice liquor similar to
makgeolli), made using freshly-ground pine
needles. The interior is decorated like an oldstyle Korean home where guests sit on the
floor. There are also traditional Korean musical
instruments such as gayageum and daebuk on
display that further add to the vintage décor;
sometimes the owner even plays them for the
guests!

from the outside, they attract long lines during
meal hours filled with workers waiting to eat

Seoul, My Story
There was a full moon over the Cheonggyecheon Stream, where many
different people from different backgrounds were passing by and
enjoying one of the last warm nights of the year. There were office
employees who had come here to relax after a busy day. Children were
playing near the water accompanied by their parents, who were busy
worrying they didn’t fall into the gushing stream. Beautiful young
couples, completely in love, were engulfed within their own universe and
not paying attention to anyone besides themselves. Birds were flying in
the evening sky and even the fish could be seen in the lucid waters.

After midnight is when Dongdaemun Market
really comes to life, a time when business
seems to pick up in earnest. Because
Dongdaemun is the epicenter of Korea’s fashion
industry, any item related to fashion can be
purchased here. In fact, there are so many largescale shopping complexes in the area that it is
better to pick out one or two suitable to one’s
tastes rather than trying to see all of them.
The area is packed with simple meal choices
for late-night snacking, including topokki and
shish-kebabs. When shopping begins to take
its toll, then a massage at a 24-hour
jjimjilbang (Korean spa) or watching a movie at
an all-night movie theater is recommended.

Synonymous with easy-to-eat street food.
Popular with Koreans of all ages, topokki (spicy
soft rice cake), eomuk (fish cake) and grilled
shish-kebabs can be spotted frequently on
Seoul’s streets, where topokki is often eaten
together with eomuk soup. Grilled shish-kebabs
of chicken, rice cakes or dongaseu and other
options with spicy and sweet gochujang (Korean
chili paste) are especially recommended.

Seoul, My Story
Straight from a 4-hour flight we are all tired and starving. So we started our
night with a street food stall hopping in and around the Dongdaemun night
market area. We had topokki (Spicy Rice Cake), one of the staple Korean
street foods. Rice cakes cooked in chili paste. It was so good and perfect for
the weather. Coming from a tropical country makes us limited to winter
clothes but it was never a problem because Dongdaemun night market has
the answers to all we need. Open til 4am the next morning, you’ll be going
gaga over the hundreds of shops to choose from.

can enjoy Indie music. Musicians active in
this area are naturally seen as being “from
Hongdae,” and are for the most part highlyindividual artists offering an alternative to
the mainstream. Many are also independent
songwriters who perform their own songs.
Visitors to Hongdae can at any time enjoy
high-quality live performances along with
impassioned fans brimming with excitement.

Su Noraebang
This unique karaoke bar (noraebang) has
often been featured in international media.
The entire façade of the building is glass,
allowing passersby to take a sneak peek at
those inside, who sing and dance vigorously
as if they were on stage. For this reason, Su
Noraebang has since become a significant
tourist attraction. There are five branches of
Su Noraebang just in Hongdae alone.

Hongdae is not only worth a visit during the daytime. If you are up for
some good parties, delicious drinks or just a cool night out, you should
definitely consider Hongdae as a great choice. Even more fascinating
is the artistic vibe you will experience while staying at the Hongdae
children’s playground, where young singers, bands and dancers try to
entertain the crowd with their talent. You can just forget about your
worries and enjoy the contagious enthusiasm with friendly strangers,
who, perchance, buy you some food or drink and become new friends.

Itaewon is home to much of Seoul’s international community as it houses the United

the city. There are also various international
restaurants and shops selling all kinds of
foods and wares. It is ideal for night owls,

Expect to find more foreign clientele at Itaewon’s clubs than elsewhere. Revelers tend
to be mostly in their late 20s or above, and
clubs adopt a freer dress code and manner
compared to those in Gangnam. Halloween
is an especially-recommended time to visit
as most establishments will cater to the
occasion, with clubbers costuming up in
suitable attire, from brain-dead zombies to
Korean-style monsters, and creating a
festive mood across the district.

Seoul, My Story
Itaewon’s character can be crazy, noisy and pricey, but it is also festive,
international, fun, and of course, touristy. And tonight, during our
discovery, it was all that! In Itaewon, everyone is welcome.
This place doesn’t choose or discriminate against you, no matter what
language you speak, no matter what the color of your skin is, or no
matter what country you are from. Itaewon doesn’t try to define you.
It’s up to you to define Itaewon.

Nightlife for
Trendsetters

The famous Gangnam region of Seoul consists
of locally well-known districts Apgujeong-dong,
Cheongdam-dong, and Sinsa-dong, where can
be found high-class restaurants and luxury
fashion brand shops, cafes and clubs frequented by local celebrities. Of course, it was
PSY who really put Gangnam on the map, and
thanks to Gangnam Style , it is now Seoul’s
most popular tourist area. Stop by Garosu-gil
in Sinsa-dong for brunch or dessert during the
day and then drop by one of the local clubs and
spend the night as if you were Beyonce, Lady
Gaga, or any major celebrity.

Gangnam’s classy clubs are the destination
of choice for fashion-lovers and trendsetters
– not to mention local famous figures - so
style and sophistication is a must. If you
are wearing sweatpants or flip flops, you
may not be allowed to enter. Admission is
generally higher here than clubs elsewhere in
Seoul, however these are the places to go to
truly experience ‘Gangnam style’.

Gangnam’s most successful bars all have
four basic things in common: refined interior

Seoul, My Story
The first time I visited Gangnam, it was immediately obvious that this
place is where it all happens. You could spend a whole day just walking
around Coex Mall, nevermind the tree-lined shops and galleries of
Garosu-gil, the department stores of Apgujeong, or the boutiques of
Cheongdam. Of course night time is when it really comes to life – when
there’s a restaurant and bar for every taste and a hundred new people to
meet each night. They say ‘Gangnam’ means ‘south of the river’, but it’s
definitely the center of the action for me!

If you are up for some good parties, delicious drinks or just a cool night out, you should definitely consider Hongdae as a great choice. Even more fascinating is the artistic vibe you will experience while staying at the Hongdae children’s playground, where young singers, bands and dancers try to entertain the crowd with their talent. You can just forget about your worries and enjoy the contagious enthusiasm with friendly strangers, who, perchance, buy you some food or drink and become new friends. JULIA MASCHE From Germany 21

Yongsan Yongsan must do Itaewon Vibrant, Multicultural Fun for Night Owls Itaewon is home to much of Seoul’s international community as it houses the United States Army Garrison, many overseas ambassadorial quarters, and the Seoul Central Mosque, the only Muslim temple in the city. There are also various international restaurants and shops selling all kinds of foods and wares. It is ideal for night owls, offering a variety of options available till late at night through its many high-quality restaurants, bars, and clubs. Clubbing in Itaewon Recommended Course inner at an exotic restaurant D Strut your stuff at a night club or be cool at a jazz bar Relax at a jjimjilbang (Korean spa), or Korean sauna Expect to find more foreign clientele at Itaewon’s clubs than elsewhere. Revelers tend to be mostly in their late 20s or above, and clubs adopt a freer dress code and manner compared to those in Gangnam. Halloween is an especially-recommended time to visit as most establishments will cater to the occasion, with clubbers costuming up in suitable attire, from brain-dead zombies to Korean-style monsters, and creating a festive mood across the district. Gangnam Gangnam must do Apgujeong-dong, Cheongdam-dong, Sinsa-dong, Seocho Gangnam Style Nightlife for Trendsetters The famous Gangnam region of Seoul consists of locally well-known districts Apgujeong-dong, Cheongdam-dong, and Sinsa-dong, where can be found high-class restaurants and luxury fashion brand shops, cafes and clubs frequented by local celebrities. Of course, it was PSY who really put Gangnam on the map, and thanks to Gangnam Style , it is now Seoul’s most popular tourist area. Stop by Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong for brunch or dessert during the day and then drop by one of the local clubs and spend the night as if you were Beyonce, Lady Gaga, or any major celebrity. Recommended Course Going to a Club in Gangnam Gangnam’s classy clubs are the destination of choice for fashion-lovers and trendsetters – not to mention local famous figures - so style and sophistication is a must. If you are wearing sweatpants or flip flops, you may not be allowed to enter. You could spend a whole day just walking around Coex Mall, nevermind the tree-lined shops and galleries of Garosu-gil, the department stores of Apgujeong, or the boutiques of Cheongdam. Of course night time is when it really comes to life – when there’s a restaurant and bar for every taste and a hundred new people to meet each night.
