This document discusses port competitiveness and infrastructure challenges in Indonesia. It finds that Indonesia's port competitiveness ranking is far behind other ASEAN countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. The main weaknesses of Indonesian ports are poor quality infrastructure and superstructure, low productivity, and delays in document clearance. Several major Indonesian ports need dredging to deepen their channels and basins to accommodate larger vessels. Ports also struggle with congestion issues and lack of equipment. Improving road connections and toll roads is part of addressing hinterland challenges to enhance port access and traffic. The Palaran Container Terminal project in Samarinda aims to boost that port's throughput capacity.
