4.1 Climate services in support of NAPs   This event will bring together experts involved in the provision of climate services and testimony from countries of how climate services are being used to support decision-making and effective adaptation. The event will start with brief statements, and will be followed by a panel discussion, where participants from the floor will have the opportunity to engage the panelists with questions or comments. The panel will demonstrate the practical benefits of climate services in support of climate risk management and adaptation to climate variability and change. It will also provide lessons learned through various activities being implemented at regional and national level.

PROGRAMME
Description: In the current changing climate, countries are having difficulties in coping adequately with the
increasing effects of hydrometeorological hazards, whether through a growth in the number of severe events,
increased exposure, heightened vulnerabilities or all the three. Implementation strategies, one of the four key
elements that need to be undertaken in the NAP process involve decisions related to climate risk
management, which have to be based on reliable, relevant, usable and timely climate information. In addition,
a number of activities in the different elements of the NAP process also require effective and timely climate
services consisting of the collection of climate data; generation and provision of a wide range of information
on past, present and future climate; development of products that help improve the understanding of climate
and its impacts on natural and human systems; and the application of these data, information and products
for decision-making in all walks of life and at all levels of society.
Climate services contribute analysis of the current and future climate change scenarios, assessment of
climate vulnerabilities that are the basis for the identification of adaptation options, enhancement of capacity
for planning and implementation of adaptation strategies.
