Server Virtualization Allows multiple operating instances to run concurrently. Creating multiple logical server OS instances on one physical piece of hardware
Need Consolidation. Redundancy. Migration.
Consolidation Combination of several machines into one single server. Fig: Consolidation
Redundancy It refers to running same application on multiple server Fig: Redundancy
Migration Migration refers to moving a server environment from one place to another. Fig: Migration
Types Full virtualization Para virtualization OS-level virtualization
Full Virtualization It uses special kind of software called HYPERVISOR. It runs multiple applications simultaneously. Fig: Full virtualization
Para Virtualization every guest is aware of other guests server’s. Fig: Para virtualization
OS level Virtualization No hypervisor used here. Has a homogeneous environment. Fig: Os level virtualization
Applications Virtual Private Server. Parallel OS environments.
Virtual Private Server. Running different guest on the same physical server. Cost Effective Less expensive Fig: Virtual private server
Parallel OS environments. Can run different OS services independent of the server used. Single Physical Server Linux Server Windows Server Parallel OS Environments SharePoint Server
Limitations Not suitable for application requiring high processing power Not suitable for limited disk space hard drives Migration is another problem for different processors

Conclusion Server virtualization is a strategic direction for managing servers.  It reduces the cost of hosting and managing servers  Managing a pool of identical servers simplifies operating procedures.
