Jesus performs a sign by feeding over 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. The people seek him out, but Jesus says they follow him because of the free food rather than because of the spiritual significance of his signs. Jesus tells them not to work for perishable food but for eternal life through believing in him, the bread of life sent from God. When questioned further, Jesus says that to do God's work is to believe in him, and that he is the true bread from heaven, not the manna the Israelites ate in the wilderness. He says that unless people eat his flesh and drink his blood, they have no life, and promises eternal life to all who do so.
