Sentence patterns
-refer to the way words are arranged in a sentence, especially focusing on the order of the subject
(S), verb (V), object (O), complement (C), and adverbials (A). Recognizing sentence patterns helps
students understand how sentences are formed and how meaning is conveyed.
1. S + V (Subject + Verb)
This is the simplest sentence pattern. It expresses a complete thought with just a subject and a verb.
Example:
Birds fly.
She sleeps.
Use: Describes an action or state without needing an object.
2. S + V + DO (Subject + Verb + Direct Object)
The verb is followed by a direct object, which receives the action.
Example:
He eats an apple.
They play football.
Use: Common for action verbs that need something or someone to complete the idea.
3. S + V + C (Subject + Verb + Complement)
The complement gives more information about the subject (Subject Complement).
Example:
She is a teacher.
The soup tastes good.
Use: Often used with linking verbs like is, are, seems, becomes, tastes.
4. S + V + IO + DO (Subject + Verb + Indirect Object +
Direct Object)
This pattern includes two objects:
the indirect object (IO) (who/what receives something)
the direct object (DO) (what is given or acted on)
Example:
She gave me (IO) a gift (DO).
They sent John (IO) a letter (DO).
