5. Difference Run On and Fragment
3. What is a Sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It contains a subject and
a predicate. A sentence can be as short as two words, but it can also be long . A sentence can
be categorized into several types depending on their structure.
4. Simple Sentence
A sentence that contains a single independent clause
Ex:
He ate rice.
The boy ran fast.
Hayder did not go to school on Wednesday.
5. Complex Sentence
A complex sentence contains at least one independent clause and one dependent
clause. If a sentence begins with a dependent clause, provide the comma after
this clause. If it starts with an independent clause, there is not a comma
separating two clauses.
Although he is rich, he is honest.
I learned English perfectly because I studied very hard.
While her parents were sleeping, Nitu left the house.
( As, if, though, although, because ,so that, till, until, when, why, who, while,
after, before)
6. Compound Sentence
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses. These two clauses
can be connected with a comma and a coordinating conjunction.
Read or you will fail.
He is rich, but he is honest.
The boys sang and the girls danced.
(and ,but ,or, yet, therefore, so )
7. What is a Fragment?
A fragment or a sentence fragment is a group of words which is used as a sentence, but it does
not express a complete thought. Although we frequently use fragments in spoken language, they
are frowned upon in written language. In written language, fragments are considered to be an
error.
A sentence fragment is another name for an incomplete sentence. In fact, this is not actually a
sentence, but only a string of words. This is because a sentence fragment cannot convey a
complete thought as a necessary component of the sentence is missing.
Since I saw her at the library.
The boy sitting on the floor, wearing a blue t-shirt.
And told me to go.
Students very busy at the end of the semester.
8. Difference Between Fragment and Sentence
Fragment does not convey a complete thought but sentence conveys a complete thought.
Fragment may not contain a subject but sentence always contains a subject.
Fragment may not contain a verb but sentence always contains a verb.
Fragment may not contain an independent clause but sentence always contains at least one
independent clause.
9. What is a Run On?
A run on sentence or a fused sentence is a sentence that is missing
right punctuation to make the sentence flow properly. In other words,
we make run on sentences when we put two or more complete
sentences together in one sentence without separating them properly.
For example,
She was in an accident her left leg was injured.
I went there meet at her place she was not happy.
10. What is the Difference Between Sentence
Fragment and Run On?
Language errors we all should try to avoid
A sentence fragment is a string of words that cannot convey a complete
thought while a run on sentence is a sentence that occurs when two or
more independent clauses are connected improperly. Therefore, this is
the key difference between sentence fragment and run on.
For Example,
Fragment: while he is eating.
Run On: He eats pizza his sister eats burger.
