semiology. This is the study of signs and their
meanings. This links to connotation and denotation.
3. • Denotation is what you can see. It is the literal meaning
of the text
• Connotation is the deeper meaning of the text
An example of this would be a
Ferrari. The denotation of this
would be that it is a red car.
However, the connotations would
be that it represents wealth. The
colour red represents passion and
love.
4. • A sign can take many different forms, such as a sound,
words, odour, flavour, or an image.
• A sign only becomes a sign when we place a meaning on
to it
• Saussure said that a sign is composed of a signifier, the
form of the sign, and the signified, the representation of
it.
