This document summarizes a study that assessed the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus carriage in dogs and their owners in Hungary. Researchers collected samples from 84 dogs and their owners, and isolated S. aureus from 17 pairs of dogs and owners. Genome sequencing was performed on the co-carried isolates to identify differences between strains and their genetic information. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis of the co-carried isolates showed that some shared the same banding pattern, while multilocus sequence typing (MLST) characterized the relatedness of the isolates. The study helps understand transmission of S. aureus between dogs and their owners.
