1. Lab On A Chip
by Jesús Velázquez and Ivonne Ferrer
In the seminar given by Jesús Velázquez and Ivonne Ferrer they talked about the advantages and creation of nanotechnology. With nanotechnology they are able to control the properties of an object by manipulating the small materials that compose it. These two researchers are working on a microchip that will be use to identify cancerous cells in a small sample of a patient’s blood. The chip is made using a silicon base. Next they melt some metal, in this case iron, to create bubbles on top of the base. Then it is exposed to oxygen crating mold on the metal bubbles. This mold has a fiber like structure which they cover with a polymer, vanadium oxide (V2O5) and finally the iron is dissolved with a specific acid creating nanotubes on the chip. Inside they place an electro kinetic pump that creates a flow of the fluid they want to analyze inside of the chip.
