Beckie Francis is the vice president and secretary of Selfspiration, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping survivors of child sexual abuse. Selfspiration organizes day camps that allow victims to connect with peers and mentors who can provide support and perspective. Their most recent camp brought together five girls and nine volunteers for a fun-filled day including a limo ride, visiting animals, mini makeovers, and photos. The camps are offered at no cost to support victims of abuse.

There are examples of people being allies throughout society, including in popular culture. Examples include Lady Gaga as well as Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (featuring Mary Lambert) and their song "Same Love." Choosing to speak out against the hate and discrimination that has been focused on a particular group, even though you are not a member of that group, is an example of being an ally. Think about your own examples of being an ally in your life. Have you witnessed others standing up for those who have experienced bias and prejudice?

Working With Survivors of Human Trafficking: The Case of Veronica
Veronica is a 13-year-old, heterosexual, Hispanic female. She attends high school and is in the ninth grade. She currently lives in an apartment with her biological mother and her sister, age 9. She came to this country 7 months ago from Guatemala. Veronica is a sex trafficking survivor and was referred to me for individual therapy by a human trafficking agency in the United States.
Veronica’s biological mother and father separated when Veronica was 3 years old. She lived with her maternal aunt and biological mother until she was 6 years old, and her mother left Guatemala to come to the United States. At that time, Veronica stayed in the care of her maternal aunt and kept in touch with her biological mother via phone and through the visits that her mother made to Guatemala. Veronica would visit with her father, who lived nearby, on occasion, although she stated they did not have much of a connection. When Veronica was 12 years old, her maternal aunt forced her into prostitution, using the money from the sex acts as her main source of income. Veronica reported that her maternal aunt began treating her “like a slave” and would make her smoke an unknown substance before obligating her to perform sexual acts on countless men for money. Selfspiration - Giving Support to Child Sexual Abuse Survivors
Beckie Francis is an advocate for protecting children from sexual abuse who supports nonprofits like Selfspiration that operate camps encouraging healing for child sexual abuse survivors. Selfspiration was founded by Jolene Loetscher in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and holds discussion camps for victims. In 2013, Beckie Francis joined with Jolene Loetscher to help pass legislation creating a task force to study child abuse issues.

This year expands the conversations to the broader community through libraries and employee discussions. Grand Valley State University will engage students through ads, counseling services and residence halls to discuss forgiveness. Beckie Francis has also been a strong advocate for the passage of Erin’s Law, one of the most significant child advocacy laws in the US’ recent history.
Erin’s Law Helps Educators Recognize the Signs of Child Sexual Abuse
Beckie Francis, an award-winning basketball coach and speaker, assisted in efforts to pass Erin’s Law in Michigan. The law, signed by Michigan’s governor in early 2013, is designed to provide education to children and teachers regarding child sexual abuse. As an advocate for the victims of child abuse, Beckie Francis celebrated the passing of the law that originated in Illinois. It has since been passed in 26 states and is pending in 17 more.
Erin’s Law
Erin's Law was established in 2011 in Illinois requiring schools to educate students and staff about child sexual abuse prevention. The law was championed by Erin Merryn, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, who began advocating for legislation in 2010. Erin's Law aims to teach children how to identify and report abuse to trusted adults, as statistics show that child sexual abuse is severely underreported. Since 2011, Erin's Law has been passed in 25 additional states and is under consideration in the remaining 24 states.

Selfspiration Empowers Abuse Victims
- 2. An undergraduate of Colgate University and a graduate of Niagara University with a master of science in counseling, Beckie Francis is passionate about advocating for victims of abuse. Beckie Francis currently serves as vice president and secretary of Selfspiration, a nonprofit dedicated to helping survivors of child sexual abuse through legislation and the creation of a day camp.
- 3. Selfspiration recognizes that 25% of girls will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18, and 90% of those victims will know their abuser. The organization’s day camps allow attendees to connect with peers who have been through the same difficult experience, as well as with adult volunteers who can provide inspiration and perspective. The most recent event, held in October 2013, brought together five girls and nine volunteers. The fun-filled day included a ride in a stretch Dodge Charger limo and a trip to the Sioux Falls Humane Society to play with the animals.
