Selfie disorder
1. Selfie Disorder
“Selfits is a genuine mental condition and
people who feel compelled to continually post
pictures of themselves on social media may
need help of psychologists.”
The term was first coined in 2014 to describe
Obsessive selfie taking in a spoof new story
which suggested the American Psychiatric
Association was considering classifying it as a
disorder.
Following on from the hoax researches of
Nottingham Trent University and Thiagarjar
school of management in India decided to
investigate whether there was truth in the
phenomenon.
The findings published on the International
Journal of Mental Health and Addiction
confirmed that there are three levels of selfits:
2. They have even developed a Selfits Behavior
scale “Levels of selfits”.
Borderline scale: taking photos of one’s
self at least 3 times a day but not posting it
on social media.
Acute scale: taking photos of one’s self at
least 3 times a day and posting each one on
social media.
Chronic scale: uncontrollable urge to take
photos of one’s self round the clock and
posting the photos on social media more
than 6 times a day.
It was scale tested using a survey of 400
participate participants were based in India
because the country has the most users on
facebook as well as the highest number of
deaths as a result of trying to take selfies in
dangerous locations.
Researchers found that typical selfits sufferer
were attention seekers, often lacking in self
3. confidence, who were hoping to boast their
social standing and feel part of a group by
constantly posting images of themselves.
Why people take more selfies?

better enjoy my environment.
Sharing my selfies create healthy with
my friends and colleagues.
I am able to reduce my stress level by
taking selfies,
I feel confident when I take selfies.
Taking different selfies poses helps
increase my social status.
I feel more popular when I post my
selfies on social media.
I become a strong member of peer group
through selfie posting.
4. Taking selfies provide better memories
about occasion and experience.
When I don’t take selfis I feel detach
from my peer group.
Taking selfies modify my mood.
Now the existence of condition appears to
have been confirmed.
It is hoped that future research will be
carried out to understand more about how
and why people develop this potentially
oppressive behavior and what can be done to
help people who are most affected.
Other technology related mental health
disorders which have been identified in
recent years include Nomophobia the fear
of not being near a mobile phone.
