In 2004, sustainability and technology industries were identified as critical to Arizona's future. A 2006 summit in northern Arizona brought together over 150 stakeholders from 70 organizations to discuss establishing a regional organization called SEDI to advance sustainable economic development. SEDI's goals are to achieve awareness and support for sustainable development, become a recognized center for sustainability policy and practice, establish a supportive regulatory environment, and integrate sustainability into business, education, and workforce development.

Riding the waves - strengthening organisational resilience
This document discusses organizational resilience in local councils and how to strengthen it. It defines resilience as having three capabilities: absorbative to adapt during shocks, adaptive to make incremental changes, and anticipatory to prepare for future disruptions. Six key characteristics of resilient councils are identified: strong leadership, engaged staff, learning and innovation, financial and performance intelligence, collaborative relationships, and resource flexibility. While councils are strong at responding to immediate shocks, many want to improve their adaptive and anticipatory capabilities. CTSO Advocacy: Oregon Success Story
During 2012-13 Oregon's Career Technical Student Organizations (e.g. DECA, FBLA, SkillsUSA, HOSA, FCCLA) partnered with industry and CTE community to champion the largest increase in state CTE and CTSO funding in history.
This overview presented at the DECA State Association Management Conference in Atlanta highlights the advocacy journey, approaches taken, lessons learned and key insights for all who champion important causes like CTE and CTSOs.

Empowering citizens towards transformative development in Malawi: addressing...
A critical look at the policy and practice trends over the past 50 years of an independent Malawi and 20 years of a democratic Malawi, it is clear that Malawi has lacked an effective developmental and democratic social contract between the state and citizens. This paper argues that at this moment and going forward there is an urgent need to find a ‘growth-enhancing’ and ‘democracy-deepening’ path to change that can stand the test of the frequent regime changes, which keeps Malawi on a vicious cycle of poverty and dependency. In order to find this path, there is need to cultivate the politics of taking responsibility, transparency, and accountability, drawing these from a continued renewal of societal values at all levels. These societal values would be developed within a construct of collective action with rules of the game that work for all actors regardless of their official labels or positions. Using evidence from research, the paper provides very practical ways of doing this. This for example includes how initiatives such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and the Farm Input Subsidy Programme (FISP), which are currently implemented mainly out of political correctness rather than transformative change, can be turned into opportunities to reconstruct state-citizen social contracts that are ‘growth enhancing’ and ‘democracy-deepening’ from the bottom up. Development is firstly political and then technical and not the other way round. Therefore, the tough questions that exit in how politics informs development and change need to be addressed for transformative change to take place.

Creating Partnerships for Collective Impact
I was really pleased to have been the final keynote speaker at the United Way Community Impact Summit held in Sydney on the 3rd of October. I talked about how we can meet the Post 2015 Agenda through sustained collective impact - or building partnerships between Cicvil Society, Business and Industry, Government and the Institutions. Cooperatives today
The cooperative sector in India plays a pivotal role in employment, poverty alleviation, and food security. It covers 100% of India's geographical area and was started 115 years ago to address agricultural debt issues. It has since expanded into many sectors. However, it faces challenges like a lack of democratic spirit, government interference, and outdated practices. It also faces opportunities through organizing new types of cooperatives, vertical and horizontal integration, and joint ventures. Cooperatives continue to be accepted due to their business model combined with social goals.
Embedding learning from cooperative projects
How can we collaborate with people to help them build their resilience? Get under the skin of the culture and the lives people live. Identify people’s feelings and experiences of community and understand what people think is shaped by different values and by the environment and infrastructure around them. The future of collaboration could bring many opportunities but people find it more difficult to live and act together than before. How can we help people…and communities build their resilience? Understand people’s different situations and capabilities to develop pathways that help them build resilient relationships. Help people experience and practice change together. Help people grow everyday practices into sustainable projects. Turn people’s everyday motivations into design principles. Support infrastructure that connects different cultures of collaboration. Build relationships with people designing in collaboration for the future…now.
Creating Partnerships for Collective Impact
I was really pleased to have been the final keynote speaker at the United Way Community Impact Summit held in Sydney on the 3rd of October. I talked about how we can meet the Post 2015 Agenda through sustained collective impact - or building partnerships between Cicvil Society, Business and Industry, Government and the Institutions. Sustainable Economic Development Initiative Overview
- 2. In 2004, the Battelle Memorial Institute identified sustainability and technology-based industries as critical to Arizona’s future. Gov. Napolitano’s “Moving Arizona Forward” economic strategy urged Arizonans to take immediate action to build this capacity.
- 3. A series of discussions among northern Arizona government, business and academic leaders revealed intense interest in taking action. In Sept 2006, more than 150 stakeholders representing over 70 organizations attended a one-day Summit to learn more about SEDI and to contribute to its development.
- 4. “ SEDI advances sustainable economic development in the region by providing enabling, facilitating, and collaborative support to businesses, educational and government entities, and other organizations that are working to increase social equity, economic prosperity, and ecological health. ”
