The 1995
Election
• This was an exciting and interesting election
because there were 79 candidates who are
challenging for the 25 seats in the Legislative
Assembly.
• 2 new political party were formed , the
People’s Action Party and the Labor Front
Singapore Progressive Party
• The Singapore Progressive Party was formed
in 1947
• Lead by Tan Chye Cheng, John Laycock and
Nazir Ahmad Mallal
• They got their support from the English-
speaking upper class professionals.
• They also support gradual self-government
• They won 4 seats in the election
People’s Action Party
• The People’s Action Party was formed in
November 1954.
• The founder was Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Keng
Swee, Toh Chin Chye, S.Rajaratnam and
K.M.Bryne
• They aimed to win the support from the
workers, the trade unions and the Chinese
school students
• They also aimed for immediate independence
Labor Front
• The Labor Front was formed in July 1954.
• It was lead by David Marshall, Lim Yew Hock
and Francis Thomas.
• This group mostly consisted low-income
people and English-educated trade union
leader
• They aim to get immediate independence
• They also want to support more equality for
the Singaporeans in the civil service
• The 1955 election gained more interest from
the local people than the previous one
because it promised a greater grade of self-
government
• There is also an increase in the amount of
Political Party. This made the people have a
better choice of voting
• There is also an increase in the number of
voters eligible in the voting
• The political Parties emphasis on anti-
colonialism to get more interest in the public
in the 1955 election. Each of the party also
increase their supporters by organizing
rallies, distributing newspaper and pamphlets,
making house-to-house visit and by holding
public speeches
Results of the 1955 election
• There were 160000 voters voting for the
election.
• The biggest winner is the Labor Front,
winning 10 out of 25 seats. This caused David
Marshall to be the Singapore’s first Chief
Minister. This was because most of the
Singaporeans were amazed by the strong anti-
colonial view and David Marshall was a
captivating leader
• The People’s Action Party won 3 out of 25
seats, they are Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Chew Cha
and Lim Chin Siong
• The British government was unexpected to see
the results of the election as they expected
that the Singapore Progressive Party would
win. This served an implication to the British
government that the local people voted for the
political Parties that hold strong opposition to
the British
• Most of the Chinese working-class had
expressed out a big discontentment with the
British rule. This made them vote for those
not pro-British and traditional
