Seborrheic keratosis is a common, non-cancerous skin growth that usually appears as waxy, scaly, flat or elevated lesions in sun-exposed areas in older individuals. The cause is unclear but genetics and UV light exposure may play a role. While usually harmless, treatment may be considered for irritated, uncomfortable or disfiguring growths using methods like liquid nitrogen freezing, scraping, or electrocautery.
