1. What are the different fields in the Social Sciences? Enumerate at least 7 and
define each.
 Psychology – a branch of social science that studies the human mind
and behavior that uses both theories and experiments.
 Political Science – a significant field of study focusing on different
systems of governance as well as political ideas and discourse.
 History – is a study of the past that straddles into different territories of
time and explores it, tries to reconstruct the past for understanding of the
present through various resources available.
 Economics - Economics emphasizes on understanding the way people
spend and utilize their available resources to satisfy their increasing
demands.
 Geography - Geography is one of the fundamental branches of social
sciences as it studies lands, their salient features, crucial phenomena that
impact the earth along with the human population and the relationship
between the study of land and the human population.
 Archeology - Archaeology encompasses the study of the material culture,
i.e. the remains of past human life and associated activities from the
specific past by collecting its residual remains, found during the
excavation process and involves a subsequent analysis of these recent or
prehistoric materials.
 Anthropology - Anthropology encompasses the study of different aspects
of the human condition and delves deep into a societies’ cultural
moorings, and how over the years culture has shaped human behavior.

Studies such as Law and Economics imposes control, order and consumerism
that is a priority for human survival. The different branches of Social Science is
always researching and studying to keep up with the constant changes the
society has.

 Analytical Skills – Social Science teaches students to analyze different
sources of information and data including numerical data, written sources
and survey results then making a conclusion out of it.
 Research Skills – Social Science researches uses both qualitative and
quantitative research methods. Students need to learn reliable data
sources, answer a research question using different sources of
information and conduct research.
 Communication – Students in the social sciences learn to communicate
verbally and in writing.
 Problem Solving – Social Science students develop students’ problem-
solving skills. Students learn problem-definition, data-collection and
information evaluation to come to a conclusion.
 Critical Thinking- Critical Thinking synthesizes research, analytical and
evaluation skills. It requires identifying the best information and data
sources, questioning evidence and identifying trends and patterns.

Social Science works with experiential data, a data obtained from real-life
experiences like interviews and surveys. Applied Social Science on the other
hand, works with experimental data, data gathered from the process of
experimentation.
