1. Typed Script for: Chatham House A Student’s Perspective
Chatham House is a school situated in Ramsgate, Kent. Chatham House was
founded in 1797 by Dr William Humble but at the time of its founding it was
known as Humbles Boy’s School. Chatham House was originally a boys-only
grammar school with the girls situated at the Clarendon school site, however in
2011 the schools decided to join and instead had different years at each site,
rather than the separation of the girls from the boys. During the extensive
lifetime of the school, it has undergone many changes since its original creation,
though it is said that the actual buildings we use as the school existed before the
decision to make them into a school, what its original intended use was, is to this
day unknown. When Ramsgate was bombed in the Second World War a bomb
actually hit what is now the school library, originally a chapel but miraculously
did not detonate, tied to this is the network of tunnels that reside beneath the
school which were used during WW2 as shelters from air raids, the entrances are
now sealed due to safety issues, but one entrance is still visible on the lower
playground and has been used by the local fire-department for training
procedures.
My time at Chatham was very enjoyable, I met lots of new friends despite moving
schools halfway through secondary school and soon settled into school with the
help of the teachers and Headteacher at the time: Mr Smart. I was also given a lot
of support when I needed it, allowing me to save my education. Chatham House
has greatly improved my life on many levels, in making me a more confident
person through its encouragement of public speaking and its focus on sporting
and academic achievement, allowing me to participate in the rugby tours and
greatly developing me as a person.
In all honesty I didn’t have the best time at Chatham house for a few years, but
this opinion was soon corrected once changes were made. I did in fact like the
new mix as opposed to being part of a completely single sex school, and I love it
here in the new sixth form centre. A few years ago the sixth form had nothing
like we do and I’m quite grateful.
Whilst these changes were being made to the schools and the mixture of boys
and girls, A new sixth form centre was made where the sixth form students could
use the new common room whenever they want full of new Apple Macs and
sofas, with a cafeteria serving fresh food.
The new changes to the common room are amazing, because the new setup
allows students with free periods to come into here and study, using the Macs
and sofas to create a place for us to study in relative peace but as with the
multitude of students in the common room at any given time, noise can
sometimes interrupt study and so if you’re looking. For a quieter place to study,
either site’s library would be a better choice to study in.
I spend loads of my time here in the common room, you can always find your
friends in there to socialise with, you can get to something to eat, you can study,
2. you can just be about do anything you’ll need to do when at school. Also the
majority of my lessons are in the building so it’s really easily accessible for me.
Chatham house now consists of three different schools. These are the junior
school, containing years seven, eight and nine, the senior school at Clarendon
containing years ten and eleven, and then the sixth form school located her.
Although these are the allocated schools, some lessons for all pupils are located
at different schools so there can a relative amount of travelling between sites for
some pupils. The head of sixth form here is Mr Moody, along with Mr Lowis.
Mr Moody improvisation interview:
Talk about your time here as head of sixth form, can be whatever you want it to
be in terms of how the school runs, support for students and what you have
enjoyed the most during your time here.
Mr Haywood improvisation interview:
Talk about your time here as a teacher, you can talk about whatever you want
but mainly focus on the enjoyable things you have experienced.
Follow us as we look at the daily ins and outs of this school and its respective
sixth form over the next few weeks.
