Background information about School of Ambition

  1. 1. Doon Academy <ul><li>Doon Academy is a small rural school situated in the village of Dalmellington in East Ayrshire. </li></ul><ul><li>The school was one of the initial 20 schools involved in the Schools of Ambition (SoA) initiative. </li></ul>
  2. 2. The beginning <ul><li>East Ayrshire Council (EAC) – learning partnership focus. </li></ul><ul><li>HT clear vision for the school. </li></ul><ul><li>Staff encouraged to “think outside the box”. </li></ul><ul><li>All staff were given the opportunity to put forward ideas. </li></ul>

SoA working group <ul><li>SoA working group established – primary colleagues, inter-agency working and school-college links. </li></ul><ul><li>Key strands were identified. </li></ul><ul><li>Individual members of the working group developing these key strands since the initiative started. </li></ul>

Six Strands <ul><li>ICT – primary colleagues. </li></ul><ul><li>Curriculum enrichment – P.E. </li></ul><ul><li>Mental health and emotional well-being – School nurse for mental health & emotional well-being. </li></ul><ul><li>Vocational education – College staff. </li></ul><ul><li>Leadership – DHT. </li></ul><ul><li>Teaching and learning FLaT – Maths, Arts Across the Curriculum (AAC) – Science . </li></ul>

Vocational Education College courses taught in school <ul><li>Motor vehicle and welding, college care. </li></ul><ul><li>Positive aspects – disengaged boys engrossed in course, curriculum more suited to their needs, additional staffing. </li></ul><ul><li>Negative aspects – tensions between college and school staff. </li></ul><ul><li>Short term issues – timetabling (start times, college staff not ready to start courses in Aug.) </li></ul><ul><li>Long term issues – less funding, less staff, dynamics of depts changing – large tech dept, small French dept. </li></ul>

Teaching and Learning Arts Across the Curriculum – Science Department <ul><li>Close links with dance, drama and animation specialists. </li></ul><ul><li>Positive aspects – builds confidence, disenchanted pupils involved, creates good team work. </li></ul><ul><li>Negative aspects – difficult to manage with more challenging classes, time to set up (50 min period). </li></ul><ul><li>Challenges – staff training, keeping the project rolling. </li></ul>

  8. 8. Moving forward In-school Research Co-ordinator <ul><li>School based research coordinator was identified early on (September 2006). </li></ul><ul><li>Remit:- organise in-school SoA working group meetings, provide support and advice for colleagues. </li></ul>

Going further In-school Research group <ul><li>Researchers were identified for each of the strands. </li></ul><ul><li>Initial research plans discussed at school level. </li></ul><ul><li>Draft plans (early 2007) forwarded to Research Team for comment. </li></ul><ul><li>Final plans added to the VRE (Virtual Research Environment). </li></ul>
