“The show gives an insight into the
somewhat secluded ‘second-life’ of our
children and the personas they have
amongst their peers”
The school lives of our children are somewhat of a mystery to most parents, with many
choosing not to give their parents daily accounts of what they have learnt or just the
general day’s events, perhaps due to the seemingly ‘uncool’ view of parents within our
society or perhaps to provide a façade through which the child can act differently around
his or hers friends to that of their parents. But, this is se to change with the release of a new
series of documentaries, focused on the internal happenings of sixth forms up and down
the country, with the first episode being set in the seaside town of Ramsgate at the CCVI
Sixth form centre. The show gives an insight into the somewhat secluded ‘second-life’ of our
children and the personas they have amongst their peers allowing all to see what really
happens within the sixth form environment at the school. Critics describe the show as a
plunge into the realms of the real reality of school life and not a form of biased
advertisement of the school as a perfect place designed to draw the seemingly less sharp
who would believe so. The first episode of ‘Common Rooms Revealed’ airs on Friday on
Channel 4 at 9 Pm, be sure to tune in and get yourself an education in reality.

“We (The UK) currently
report to having a 1 in 4
obesity rate within
adults with this set to
rise over the next few
years on a global scale”
The subject of obesity and unhealthy living in general is a hotly contested area of debate
within society, do we have the right to eat and live how we want, just as we can with our
freedom of speech? Or is it something that needs to be regulated? The world’s level of
obesity is increasing at an alarming rate and something must be done about it. We (The UK)
currently report to having a 1 in 4 obesity rate within adults with this set to rise over the
next few years on a global scale, is obesity something we can just allow to happen?
Page 2
The show also touches on a national and global problem being faced by society: how is
junk food affecting our children? The head of sixth form Mr Moody (pictured below)
discusses this problem within some detail, especially due to the sixth form’s location to
the town centre and therefore the multiple retailers selling the unhealthy option to our
children.
Mr Moody then goes on to describe how the business
created for the outlets by the students does provide
them with a good source of sales revenue but by the
same token, the money put into the businesses will
ultimately become costs for the medical services
needed as a result of the high levels of obesity within
the country.
This documentary has helped to raise awareness to the question:
The larger proportion of obesity in adults could be
argued was due to the unknown long term effects
that would arise as a result of increased junk food
intake, but as the statistics show, almost 1 in 4
children within the UK is a sufferer of obesity as
well if nothing is done about this, the health of our
nation is at stake. But is obesity a choice? Or an
unpleasant reaction to some form of external
factor unique to each person? This editor believes
that people will not be swayed by new facts or
figures due to being too set in their ways and as a
result, the obesity levels within the country will
not decrease until people want to change.
