3. THE BACKGROUND
I started with a background
colour and erased the
edges to give it a ‘rock’
edge
Next, I added a
gradient to give
the background a
light to dark effect.
I think this looks
more professional
and emphasizes
aspects hence
doing it. Finally, I added a texture to the background to give it a darker, rock
atmosphere. I did this by using different brushes to create darker and
lighter tones, then putting the layer into overlay so it’s placed over
the background and turning down the opacity so only parts come
through.
4. Main image
Given the quality of
photography, there was
little I had to do to the
main image. The only
thing I did was brush over
with the spot healing
brush, to remove some of
his facial deformities.
5. Masthead
The font for the masthead
was given a texture to make
it appropriate for the target
audience, through this, it
adds to the atmosphere of
rock. Simply, this was
created by using erasers,
carefully, scratching in the
lines. The burn tool was also
used to give it dark tones to
achieve an aged effect.
6. Plugs
This is a sticker I made to
promote and emphasize
the purpose of the
magazine. As it has the
name just, I ran with the
idea it could apply to a
number of genre’s and
thus, my magazine was
talking from a rock angle
and hence ‘’rock
edition’’.
The next plug created was to promote features within the magazine
or simply, a review of guitar playing equipment. To create this, I first
got the two images of guitar pedals, cut them out and added a stroke
layer to them to make them stand out. Then, I created a box for the
text to go on. This was simple a box, with a 3d layer to make it stand
out and some red air brush paint to add an aged effect. I then cut it
through the middle, simply, to make it look interesting on the page.
Finally, I added a colorful layer underneath the word ‘pedal’. To
achieve this, I experimented with paint and duplicated layers, erased
them and experimenting with layer order and ‘overlay’ to get my
final product.
7. More Plugs
This plug, again, was to promote things within
the magazine. Firstly, I created the poster look
like to contain the words. The poster was
simple, to some extent, it was just a white box
that I erased on the edges to give it a torn
effect. The black lines and text are self
explanatory. Then, the picture was used as a
sample of the ‘posters’ inside. The photograph
was taken by myself and I wanted to make it
look like a polaroid so thus, added a white
background box to the back of the photo.
Then, I erased parts of the photo and box for
the same effect and brushed in bits of orange
to add age to the effect.
8. Text Boxes
Another features was the text boxes
seen around the page. Simple, this
was a rectangle shape using the
shape tool with an added 3D /
shadow layer, in black.
9.
10. Contents Masthead
The masthead for the contents page was similar to
that of the front cover. Simply, I used the same font
and applied the eraser to scratch in the marks.
11. Text Boxes Around The Page
The text boxes seen around
the page, similar to the front
cover, were again created and
then given a scratchy aged
effect to compliment the
genre of the magazine.
Simply, all that was required
was to scratch into the boxes
with the eraser tool, using
different forms of the tool to
give different marks or
scratches as seen in the
boxes. Also, a variety of fonts
were used.
12. Plugs
More simply, with this
one I just placed the
picture in place and like
the contents masthead,
scratched into it with the
eraser to give that worn
rock tone. Also, I wanted
to create what looked
like duct tape on the
sides and with this, I did
exactly the same but with
a shape rather than a
picture.
In the exact same
way I created the
plug for the front
cover, this guitar
pedal as part of the
article was created
by cutting out a
picture of a guitar
pedal and, simply,
cutting around it and
adding a stroke layer
to make it stand out.

14. DPS Masthead
With the masthead for the double page
spread I wanted to express a different kind
of mood, one more personal to the
character in the interview. Given the
character’s instability, I wanted to express
this in the title thus the blur and waves of
the text. The process of creating this was
relatively simple. Firstly, I gathered my font
and size. Then, I duplicated the font layer
and placed it over the original layer. From
there, I added a motion blur filter to the
duplicated text layer. Through this, it
blurred that layer but left the original layer,
making the font seem blurred. Through the
motion blur, I turned the degree up to 90
and the fill quite high to give a believable
blur.
15. Cover line/ Plug
The purpose of the following plug/cover
line was to give the reader further insight
into the stories history and, obviously, to
look interesting. With absolute similarity
to other aspects, it was created by getting
a shape, turning its opacity down so it
doesn’t stand out too much, and
scratching into it with an eraser for similar
reasons. Then, the photo’s and tape
looking shape were placed upon the
shape. Again, the tape was created by
scratching into a shape to make it look like
duct tape.
