Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November to give thanks for food and blessings. The tradition began in 1620 when Pilgrims from England traveled on the Mayflower to start a new life with religious freedom in America. During their first winter, many Pilgrims died due to the harsh conditions. The following spring, Wampanoag Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn, hunt, and fish. After harvesting a good crop that fall, the Pilgrims and Native Americans held a celebration that came to be known as the first Thanksgiving. Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated with traditional foods that are similar to what was eaten at the first Thanksgiving.
