Last-mile technology is any telecommunications technology that carries signals from the broad telecommunication backbone along the relatively short distance (hence, the "last mile") to and from the home or business. Or to put it another way: the infrastructure at the neighborhood level.
In many communities, last-mile technology represents a major remaining challenge because the cost of providing high-speed, high-bandwidth services to individual subscribers in remote areas can be higher than the service provider would like. Laying wire and fiber optic cables is an expensive undertaking that can be environmentally demanding and require high maintenance. Experts hope that broadband wireless networks will eventually provide the solution and meet everyone's needs.(techtarget.com)
What is “Last Mile Access”
It is the final leg of delivering connectivity from a communications provider to a customer. Usually referred to by the telecommunications and cable television industries. It is typically scene as an expensive challenge because “fanning out” wires and cables is a considerable physical undertaking.” (from Wikipedia)
Designing Digital Change, Synopsis Hong Kong, April 2016:
In this session Mr. Nigel Green shares his experience of preparing organisations for the Digital World. He introduces key concepts that will help open-up the discussion of the implications, risks, and opportunities, of a digital strategy. Whilst the popular definition of “Going Digital” is often focused on digital channels for Marketing purposes, Mr. Green explains why it also impacts many areas of the organisation, and explains why it is not simply the CMO’s, CDO’s, or CIO’s challenge alone. He will also share tools and techniques used in the design & execution of the transformation to a digitally enabled business. In addition, he will discuss pragmatic next steps to take, and share ideas on how to contribute to a business-wide discussion on the subject.
This session should be of interest to anyone trying to get to grips with what “Going Digital” means to their organization, and how to start planning the change:
- The components of a digitally-enabled Business Model
- The implications & risks of adopting “Bi-modal IT”
- How to design for the protection of existing core business systems whilst embracing the new
- Dealing with an unknown future, and adaptive long-range planning
- The dangers of “Big Design Up Front”, and perhaps paradoxically, why “Adaptive Design” is ever more crucial
- The business and technology architecture implications - including a perspective on the applicability of a pattern adopted by the “born digitals” (e.g. Netflix, Google, and Amazon)
- Suggested subject matter experts to track, follow-up research material, and next steps to take.

Wireless communication involves the transmission of information over a distance without the help of wires, cables or any other forms of electrical conductors.
Wireless communication is a broad term that incorporates all procedures and forms of connecting and communicating between two or more devices using a wireless signal through wireless communication technologies and devices.
Features of Wireless Communication
The evolution of wireless technology has brought many advancements with its effective features.
The transmitted distance can be anywhere between a few meters (for example, a television's remote control) and thousands of kilometers (for example, radio communication).
Wireless communication can be used for cellular telephony, wireless access to the internet, wireless home networking, and so on.

2. “No one ever thought that G.fast can work up to 500 meters. What we
demonstrated in several tests and trials, British Telecom mentioned that as
well, we showed the technology can reach quite longer distances than what
they thought would occur and when people talked about 200 meters, we
showed them 500 meters is actually realistic.”
3. “We solved a big problem internally in our chip, which is vectoring. Vectoring in such
a powerful modem is quite a challenge and what we did, we developed a new way to
approach it called distributed vectoring. This means that our chipset is already
handling the vectoring – we don’t need any external vectoring engine like in VDSL
and we did it in a much faster way than anything that was implemented before.”
4. “By not running the fiber all the way, you can save hundreds of dollars or
even more per every customer.”
6. “We are already talking about doubling the bandwidth and we are talking
about higher power, longer reach, many of the features that guys like British
Telecom are promoting today will be implemented in the coming year.”
7. “There is enough capacity out there. Those copper lines will not die in the next
10-15 years. It’s just a question of when are we going to use this capacity.
There isn’t a question of if we are going to use it because we can see that
anyway it will be worthwhile to use it and to squeeze more out of it.”
8. “We realized that by providing a solution that will commoditize the toughest
problems in the whole equation - by providing a complete solution of vectoring,
providing a complete solution of management. So, we also built a software that
can support SDN and cloud management. We created a solution that can be
implemented by any company.”
9. “Today that’s the main reason we have over 30 customers. Many of them didn’t
have any business in this area and now, a company that wants to develop G.fast
can come to us and get the whole package and offer something that will be
similar to the big guys in this market – without building up a new team, a huge
team and having to invest a huge investment in this area.”
10. “I see a long life for copper and it will keep on going and fiber will gradually
get closer and closer to the customers until finally it will find its way to the
home. But this will not happen in one day.”
