Text Snippets to Corroborate Medical Relations: An Unsupervised Approach usin...
Knowledge graphs have been shown to significantly improve search results. Usually populated by subject matter experts, relations therein need to keep up to date with medical literature in order for search to remain relevant. Dynamically identifying text snippets in literature that confirm or deny knowledge graph triples is increasingly becoming the differentiator between trusted and untrusted medical decision support systems. This work describes our approach to mapping triples to medical text. A medical knowledge graph is used as a source of triples that are used to find matching sentences in reference text. Our unsupervised approach uses phrase embeddings and cosine similarity measures, and boosts candidate text snippets when certain key concepts exist. Using this approach, we can accurately map semantic relations within the medical knowledge graph to text snippets with a precision of 61.4% and recall of 86.3%. This method will be used to develop a novel application in the future to retrieve medical relations and corroborating snippets from medical text given a user query.

American Heart Association - Funding Vital New Heart
The American Heart Association (AHA) funds critical cardiovascular health research as a foundational mission. Since 1949, the organization has invested more than $5.7 billion into new research, with ongoing AHA-funded projects numbering 1,700 and representing $479 million in allocated capital. In 2022-23 alone, the organization provided $178 million in funding toward 868 new projects.
Throughout its history, AHA has assisted in launching numerous careers in brain and cardiovascular research, including 15 scientists who achieved the Nobel prize. Over the past five years, the funding landscape has changed dramatically, with funding for scientists from underrepresented ethnic and racial groups more than doubling.
The impact of such funding in legitimizing research can be substantial, with each $1 of AHA early-career faculty development awards generating, on average, 7.8 dollars in additional funding. The volunteer resources required to arrange such financing levels are immense. In 2022-23, 2,234 peer review volunteers evaluated 3,775 funding proposals. Of these, 1,996 applications, representing $535 million in requested funds, did not receive support.
One of the major funding events each year centers on selecting three Merit Award winners, who receive $1 million each toward researching heart disease causes and treatments. Announced in January, the winners for 2024 spanned researchers in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and California.
A Stanford University School of Medicine professor, Dr. Philip S. Tsao, is researching the impact of vaping on abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) risks. AAA involves a weakening of a major artery in the abdomen, with its rupture often resulting in death. As the researcher describes it, around 90 percent of people who suffer from AAA have a tobacco history of use. Yet, this relationship has been little studied, and there is almost no data tracking e-cigarettes and vaping and the prevalence of such aneurysms.
Associated with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Dr. Daniel J. Rader studies large-scale human genetics as a pathway of altered lipid metabolism, which can result in heart disease. A focus is on new genes expressed in the liver, which modulate the blood lipids implicated in many forms of heart disease. The research aims to unlock core cellular and biological mechanisms contributing to cardiovascular disease risk.
Finally, Harvard Medical School professor Dr. Joseph Loscalzo is working on uncovering links between heart disease and naturally occurring chemicals in foods (or the foods themselves). Employing high-speed computers and algorithmic modeling, he has identified 135,000 such chemicals. A key focus is understanding how food chemicals interact with cellular proteins and which chemicals help protect the heart. This potentially lays a framework for developing new heart-protective drugs.

The role of genetic factors in Hypertension among Iraqi citizens
In this study, 140 patients were collected, and they were divided into two groups (120 patients and 30 control groups). The average age in this study ranged from 25 to 65 years. This paper aims to know the role of genetic factors in hypertension among Iraqi citizens and. This study was designed through cooperation with the hospital for the purpose of withdrawing the information found in the electronic record to patients, which includes primary information from demographic data (age - gender - body mass index - blood samples - smoking - alcohol - clinical history - genetic history and blood pressure. The data and demographic information related to the patients were analysed by relying on the statistical analysis program IBM soft SPSS 22. The results that were found were a collection of 140 patients (no positive result for 30 patients) (and 120 patients with a positive result), and the statistical value and the mean for the age of the patients was 45.2±15.3 as was done. Proportion of Family History with Hypertension patients and patient distribution (parents for 90 patients with 64.2% - siblings for 28 patients with 20% - offspring for 32 patients with 22.8%. Through the statistical analysis, a statistically significant relationship was found between genetic factors and their effect on arterial hypertension, with a p-value of 0.001.

What Are the Causes of Actinic Keratosis?

Actinic keratosis is caused by prolonged, unprotected exposure to UV radiation, which is why AK is often formed in sun-exposed regions of the skin. Recovering From Mohs Surgery

Although Mohs surgery, or Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), is a long procedure due to the microscopic analysis it requires, healing from the procedure is relatively simple and uneventful.
Immediately following the procedure, patients feel tired. During this time, it’s advised that they rest as much as possible and avoid any strenuous activity, like bending. At the same time, they must pay attention to the bandage placed at the surgical site.
Most physicians ask that the bandage is left on for 24 to 48 hours. After that time, patients remove the bandage and use whatever wound care their physician recommends. Since the surgical site is either stitched closed, left alone, or has a skin flap or graft placed over it after surgery, the specific wound care requirements vary.
Most patients do not experience pain when healing from Mohs surgery. However, those that do have minor discomfort or light bleeding must manage the issue with over-the-counter medications before the pain becomes unbearable. Physicians rarely prescribe pain medication for MMS, but they may prescribe antibiotics.
Stitches are removed four to 14 days following the surgery, if they were used when closing the surgical site. Patients are then free to return to normal activities, unless their physician advises that they wait longer. Full recovery may take a few weeks.

Em consonância com os ODS – Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável e a Estratégia Global para a Saúde das Mulheres, Crianças e Adolescentes, e aplicando uma abordagem baseada nos direitos humanos, os esforços de cuidados pós-natais devem expandir-se para além da cobertura e da simples sobrevivência, de modo a incluir cuidados de qualidade.
Estas diretrizes visam melhorar a qualidade dos cuidados pós-natais essenciais e de rotina prestados às mulheres e aos recém-nascidos, com o objetivo final de melhorar a saúde e o bem-estar materno e neonatal.
Uma “experiência pós-natal positiva” é um resultado importante para todas as mulheres que dão à luz e para os seus recém-nascidos, estabelecendo as bases para a melhoria da saúde e do bem-estar a curto e longo prazo. Uma experiência pós-natal positiva é definida como aquela em que as mulheres, pessoas que gestam, os recém-nascidos, os casais, os pais, os cuidadores e as famílias recebem informação consistente, garantia e apoio de profissionais de saúde motivados; e onde um sistema de saúde flexível e com recursos reconheça as necessidades das mulheres e dos bebês e respeite o seu contexto cultural.
Estas diretrizes consolidadas apresentam algumas recomendações novas e já bem fundamentadas sobre cuidados pós-natais de rotina para mulheres e neonatos que recebem cuidados no pós-parto em unidades de saúde ou na comunidade, independentemente dos recursos disponíveis.
É fornecido um conjunto abrangente de recomendações para cuidados durante o período puerperal, com ênfase nos cuidados essenciais que todas as mulheres e recém-nascidos devem receber, e com a devida atenção à qualidade dos cuidados; isto é, a entrega e a experiência do cuidado recebido. Estas diretrizes atualizam e ampliam as recomendações da OMS de 2014 sobre cuidados pós-natais da mãe e do recém-nascido e complementam as atuais diretrizes da OMS sobre a gestão de complicações pós-natais.

RESULTS: Overall life span (LS) was 2252.1±1742.5 days and cumulative 5-year survival (5YS) reached 73.2%, 10 years – 64.8%, 20 years – 42.5%. 513 LCP lived more than 5 years (LS=3124.6±1525.6 days), 148 LCP – more than 10 years (LS=5054.4±1504.1 days).199 LCP died because of LC (LS=562.7±374.5 days). 5YS of LCP after bi/lobectomies was significantly superior in comparison with LCP after pneumonectomies (78.1% vs.63.7%, P=0.00001 by log-rank test). AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: phase transition (PT) early-invasive LC in terms of synergetics, PT N0—N12, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells- CC and blood cells subpopulations), G1-3, histology, glucose, AT, blood cell circuit, prothrombin index, heparin tolerance, recalcification time (P=0.000-0.038). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.

Scientists Develop Polygenic Test for Coronary Artery Disease Risk
- 2. Introduction An accomplished cardiologist, Dr. Rajan Bhatt cares for patients at Spectrum Dermatology & Vein Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. Dr. Rajan Bhatt is also a respected clinical researcher and has published peer-reviewed papers on studies he has conducted on coronary artery disease and related conditions. In January of 2018, the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Genetics published an article on the development of a polygenic risk test for coronary artery disease. Researchers at Laval University, McMaster University, and the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) in Canada created the metric, based on their review of the genotypes of more than 111,000 subjects in the UK Biobank.
- 3. Coronary Artery Disease Risk From this information, the team identified 182 genetic variants linked to coronary artery disease. Using the resultant polygenic risk score, known as GRS182, the team found that higher numbers correlated with the development of early-onset coronary artery disease (EOCAD). The association proved comparable to, yet independent from, other risk factors, which indicated that polygenic testing can be a clinically useful tool for risk evaluation. Researchers suggest that when combined with currently available genetic testing, polygenic testing can contribute to a 500 percent increase in identified cases of EOCAD.
