The nervous system is divided into two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. It serves as the main processing center. The PNS connects the CNS to the rest of the body and is divided into the somatic and autonomic nervous systems. The basic unit of the nervous system is the neuron, which contains a cell body, dendrites, and an axon. Nerve impulses travel along neurons through electrical and chemical signals. The senses detect stimuli in the environment and send messages to the brain to elicit responses.
