The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 but did not establish schools in the new territory until 1877. The first high school, Sheldon Jackson College, was founded in 1878, and the first university, dedicated to science and engineering, was established in 1935. Over time, more schools, high schools, and universities were added across Alaska, including the Aquarian Charter School, a primary school founded in 2010 that offers a stress-free environment with a focus on subjects like art and music. The University of Alaska Fairbanks, founded in 1917, is 99 years old and has over 11,000 students and 800 faculty members.
