This document discusses the urgent need to address climate change and save the planet. It provides quotes from climate scientists warning that tipping points have been passed and the Arctic could be ice-free by 2012 without rapid action. It also includes a quote from Supreme Master Ching Hai emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change and the risks of greenhouse gases being released from melting ice. The document advocates adopting a plant-based diet and renewable energy to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slow climate change.
The document discusses several topics related to sustainability including:
1) Global warming and the potential costs and impacts of it being true or not being true.
2) The triple bottom line concept of evaluating impacts on the environment, society, and economy.
3) Key aspects of climate change such as the scientific consensus that recent warming is extremely unlikely to be due to natural causes alone and its impacts on areas like health, agriculture, and wildlife.
4) Greenhouse gases and their role in energy generation and strategies like becoming carbon neutral.
5) The differences between indoor environmental quality and indoor air quality, and factors beyond airborne contaminants that affect IEQ.
6) The concept of
Is change always good? Eight of the ten warmest years on record have occurred since 2001. Extreme weather conditions have become more common with climate change. Today, buildings in the USA consume approximately 65% of the nation’s electricity and account for 40% of the total energy use. Accelerated burning of fossil fuels to quench the ever growing thirst of the global energy demands is having an unprecedented impact on the environment while contributing to higher energy costs and reduced reserves. However, many opportunities exist to minimize the footprint left behind from the construction, renovation and operation of buildings. This presentation explores the evidence in support of climate change, the contributions of the US Green Building Council to help solve this problem and why this information should be important to you. Your journey along the pathway of sustainability should continue from here…now! The earth’s children are depending on you!

The document discusses different types of atmospheric disturbances including air masses, fronts, midlatitude cyclones, and hurricanes. It provides definitions and key characteristics of each type of disturbance. Air masses are large bodies of air that have uniform properties and are classified based on their source region and temperature/humidity. Fronts are zones where air mass properties change rapidly and include warm, cold, stationary, and occluded fronts. Midlatitude cyclones are large low pressure systems that move with westerly winds and bring precipitation to populated regions. Hurricanes are intense tropical cyclones that form over warm ocean waters and have damaging winds and heavy rain.
This document discusses wildfires that are burning across Nevada and their impacts. It provides:
1) Perspectives from an ecologist that wildfires are a natural process that preserves wildlands, but that a history of fire suppression and invasive grasses have altered some plant communities and increased fire risks.
2) Details about recent large wildfires in Nevada, including the 2005 Southern Nevada Complex Fire that burned 700,000 acres, as well as recovery efforts like those of the Burned Area Emergency Response team.

The Arctic sea ice extent has dramatically decreased between 1989 and 2007, with 15% less sea ice area in 2007 compared to 1989. The age of Arctic sea ice has also decreased over this period, with ice in 2007 being on average 5 years younger than in 1989. Some experts project that the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free in summer as early as 2012, earlier than previous projections, due to rapid sea ice loss exceeding model expectations. Loss of sea ice and warming permafrost soils release greenhouse gases that further increase global temperature in a reinforcing feedback loop.
This document summarizes a trip to Antarctica organized by Quark Expeditions. It discusses sights seen on the trip like icebergs, penguins, and glaciers. The document summarizes several dictators throughout history who abused their power:
1) Adolf Hitler ruled Germany from 1933-1945 and was responsible for the Holocaust that killed over 6 million Jews. He started World War II and committed suicide when facing defeat.
2) Saddam Hussein ruled Iraq from 1979-2003, invading neighboring countries, imprisoning and killing countless people. He was captured and executed after the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.
3) Idi Amin ruled Uganda from 1971-1979, initially welcomed but later harassed and killed ethnic minorities and as many as half a million people total. He ruined Uganda.
4) Hosni Mubarak ruled Egypt from 1981-
The document summarizes the human impact on melting ice caps. It discusses how satellite images from the 1970s show the receding ice cap around the North Pole. The melting ice caps are raising sea levels and threatening coastal cities by 2100. This will displace many people from their homes. The melting is also harming animal populations that depend on the ice like polar bears, penguins, and seals. Cutting fossil fuel use can help reduce global warming and slow the ice cap melting.
Before, the Redwood National Forest was green and healthy with undisturbed trees. The Polar Ice Caps had large chunks of ice that rarely melted. Canaan Lake was a place where people could swim and skate.
After, changes from global warming caused increases in temperature that impacted plants, trees, and animals in the Redwood Forest. The Polar Ice Caps lost much of their ice, melting faster and causing sea levels to rise. Canaan Lake is now almost a swamp, too warm for swimming or skating, overgrown with weeds and pollution where only ducks and swans live. Global warming negatively changed these three environments.
Global warming poses a serious threat to both the environment and many animal species. The rapid burning of fossil fuels over the past century has caused polar ice to melt and sea levels to rise. This melting ice has negatively impacted polar bears, forcing them to swim longer distances, become exhausted, and drown. Population densities of polar bears have declined by 22% in some areas, and remaining bears are thinner on average. If warming continues unabated, many animals could face extinction as their habitats disappear. While some disagree about the threat, most surveys show people believe global warming endangers the environment and wildlife. Immediate action is needed to curb emissions and limit global temperature rise.
This document discusses how various natural forces shape the Earth's surface through erosion and deposition over long periods of time. It provides examples of how wind erodes rock formations into unique shapes over hundreds of thousands of years. Waves similarly erode cliffs by carrying away tiny pieces. The Grand Canyon was formed by different erosion processes over millions of years. Glaciers can also reshape landscapes by pushing material as they advance and withdraw, leaving gouges that become features like the Great Lakes. The Appalachian Mountains have eroded from their original height due to weathering over extremely long timescales.
Prof Alan Rodger - The Latest Evidence on Climate Change, Beyond IPCCShane Mitchell
This document discusses the impacts of climate change beyond what is captured by the IPCC reports. It summarizes findings from ice core research showing atmospheric CO2 levels are now higher than the past 650,000 years. Sea level rise and temperature rise are accelerating due to human emissions. Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense. Uncertainties remain around future climate impacts due to natural variability and incomplete models. Non-linear effects could lead to unexpected changes.
Roughly one billion of the world’s human population is estimated to be vegetarian, or virtually vegetarian, so their very existence offers proof enough that meat is not necessary for human survival.
This document lists 73 Loving Hut vegan restaurants located around the world. It provides the country, city, store name, address, and telephone number for each location. The restaurants are spread across Asia Pacific, North America, Central America, Europe, Mongolia, Taiwan, and Formosa.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

26. About Supreme Master Ching Hai
Supreme Master Ching Hai attained full
enlightenment in the Himalayas. In 1985,
she began to share her message of Truth
by giving public lectures and initiating
sincere students into the Quan Yin Method
of meditation on the Light and Sound within.
This is the most ancient spiritual practice
recorded in the scriptures of all the world’s
religions and the most direct way to contact God.
Besides being a spiritual teacher, Supreme Master Ching Hai is also an accomplished
artist, poet and designer. The revenue from her artistic creations helps finance
her lecture tours and supports charitable causes across all continents worldwide.
In recognition of her devotion to world peace and the spiritual elevation of
humankind, the United Nations has invited her on three occasions to lecture at
its New York and Geneva headquarters.
As a gesture of appreciation towards her humanitarian efforts, the government of
the United States has awarded the ‘World Spiritual Leadership Award’ and the ‘World
Peace Award’ in 1993 and 1994 respectively, as well as ‘Honorary U.S. Citizenship’. Discover more of Supreme Master Ching Hai
