The objective of the FAST Danube project is to propose navigation improvement solutions on the Romanian-Bulgarian common sector of the River Danube. The proposed technical solutions would ensure that the required navigation parameters (navigation channel width, depth and bend radius) are achieved at the specified lowest navigation water levels. This would enable safe navigation and transport activities on the Romanian-Bulgarian common sector of the River Danube throughout the entire year.
MIKE 21 FM hydrodynamic and sediment transport models have been developed to help understand the behaviour of the river and the reasons for the changes in river morphology, which result in constraints to navigation at the critical locations. The MIKE 21 FM models are required to support the selection of solution options by providing a first assessment of the relative performance of navigation improvement solutions in maintaining the required navigation fairway parameters. In addition, the MIKE 21 FM models will also provide outputs to support the assessment of the potential impacts of the solutions on navigation conditions and on the river environment. Furthermore, the models will also be used as tools in future management of the river in the project area.
This presentation will focus on the numerical modelling conducted with the MIKE 21 FM model within the FAST Danube project, and how the MIKE 21 FM models are used in the development of navigation improvement solutions and options appraisal process.

This project essentially looked at the stability of a deepened approach channel and examined the impact of the dredging and disposal for the scheme in support of a public planning hearing. The modelling used coupled MIKE 21 FM HD-SW-ST models as well as well as MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 FM HD and MT models.
DESIGN OF A MODEL HAULAGE TECHNIQUE FOR WATER FLOODING CAISSON ASSEMBLY.Emeka Ngwobia
Presented in this study is the engineering solution to the movement of a 63m, 45tons Caisson from a fabrication yard to a field location in the Gulf of guinea. This was achieved by dividing the whole process into three stages; firstly by using excel sheets with relevant design formulas to design the spreader bar configuration to lift the caisson from the quayside to a crane barge conveniently, showing the necessary lifting sequence employed to complete this process, also designing the lifting accessories needed which includes pad eyes, shackles, wire rope and spreader bars according to relevant codes and standards The first spreader Is an I beam of length of 25m and section with dimension 533mm by 229mm weighing 129kg/m, the second beam and the third beam are designed similarly as an I beam of length 9m and section 533mm by 229mm weighing 129kg/m. The choice of pad eye to be welded on the spreader beam was based on the working limit of the pad eye, which was analytically designed using spread sheet, performing necessary checks to make sure it will not break off during the lifting operations. It is reinforced with cheek plates at the pin hole to reduce the stresses at the pin hole. The total pad eye used for this operation is 16. The choice of shackle attached to each of the pad eye was based on the total self weight of all the lifting materials(55tons), according to the Crosby group catalogue it is an S2130 bow shackle of Nominal size 50.8mm, Stock no 1019659 and weight 23.7002kg, also the wire rope configuration chosen to based on the safe working load limit according to the Bethlehem wire rope general purpose catalogue ASME B30.5- 1995 the wire rope has nominal strength of 53.1tons, sling class 19x7 IWRC(Purple or extra improved ploy (EIP Steel).
. Secondly, by providing solutions to sea fastening for the caisson on the deck of the crane barge, which was modeled using STAADPRO, which involved support designs and loss of support designs, so as to accommodate for the hydrodynamic effect while the caisson is being transported by the crane barge, having in mind that the crane barge chosen will adequately accommodate the caisson because of the deck space required to fit the 63m long caisson, from the analysis the Caisson is supported by steel beams spaced at 10 m interval which is fastened with the aid of a clamp as seen in the detailed drawings, this caisson and beam supports are modeled with staadpro software and support reactions obtained. These supports are now spaced at 20 m intervals and analyzed to simulate a situation where there is a loss of support reaction during transportation of the caisson. A saddle clamp is to joined to a H beam for support to hold it to the deck at varying length and at the starting point a pivot made from a pad eye joined with a pin to connect the saddle clamp to allow for easy lifting of the caisson when it is at 25m to the FPSO.

I - Overview of Study:
The scope of the project methodology analyzed three sites for a
potential Cruise Terminal capable of handling in range of 2,700
passengers and docking/berthing station. . The scope of this
study evaluated environmental impacts, navigational
challenges, and compatibility with the Georgia Ports Authority
(GPA) vessel operations on the Savannah River, technical
investigations, utility/traffic coordination, site challenges,
docking requirements and identification of potential
challenges with each site. The Phase I report has taken into
consideration and evaluated the waterside / marine conditions
and general infrastructure existing at each of the three sites
and provided a tabulation of ranking ranging from Most
Desirable to Least Desirable.

Navigation & Hydrographic Information
Issues Applicable To All Sites-
Ships greater than 800 ft turning to occur upriver at King’s Landing
For maneuvering Pilots request additional 100 ft mooring area each end of ship
Seasonality effects passage, such as in the spring when fog is common, limit
vessel operations in the river. Other ports like Tampa and New Orleans have
similar fog from time to time.
Military Outload Division (MOD) use of the Ocean Terminal facilities and the
Naval Vessel Protection Zone (NVPZ) in place and enforced by the US Coast
Guard (CG) during the course of MOD operations (100 yard intercept zone / 500
yard escort zone).
US Coast Guard (CG) reports that the regulations concerning LNG vessels could
cause cruise ship delay in transit due to one of these LNG vessels transiting the
area. Such operational coordination requirements common at most major ports

this site currently or in the future.

District and Georgia SHPO, was signed in January 2007 detailing the required
cultural resource studies for the Riverwalk project at this site

modification may trigger revisions)

• This site is directly across Ocean Terminal site. Should this site be used for a
cruise terminal, cruise ships calling at this facility; while the Military Outload
Division (MOD) is in operation at Ocean Terminal, are subject to berthing
restrictions associated with the NVPZ 100 yard “intercept zone” restriction.

• Direct access for all bus and truck traffic may be achieved by routing such
traffic to a roadway running north to south along the east boundary of the
property to access President Street as well as Truman Parkway.
•Cruise vessels refueling at this site may accommodate the bunker barge
without extending into the federal channel. This site currently has more
linear distance from the existing wharf to the federal channel; final facility
design will ultimately dictate these distances.
•Should this site be used for a cruise terminal, cruise ships will use the
King’s Landing turning basin. While the MOD is in operation at Ocean
Terminal, cruise ships sailing upstream to access the King’s Landing turning
basin may be subject to transiting through the NVPZ 100 yard intercept and
500 yard escort zone restrictions.

Conclusions and Recommendations
• Study identifies that each of three sites have issues and concerns
that need to be addressed should it be chosen as
the preferred site by the City of Savannah to move forward to the
next pre-development/permitting stage.
• None of the three sites identified a highly significant negative
factor that the team considered as a “fatal flaw” which would
would eliminate it from further consideration.
• Analysis was limited to the critical factors identified and studied for
the alternative sites.
• Site rankings were presented in a score card format for presentation
purposes. Using the method for comparing the three sites, the ranking
of the sites are:
