This document provides guidelines for scoring SAT essay responses. Essays are scored on a scale of 1 to 6 by trained readers based on how well they develop a point of view, use evidence and reasoning, and follow standard written English conventions. Higher scores are given to essays that establish and defend a clear thesis using well-developed examples and coherent organization. Lower scores are given to essays that are poorly organized, lack a clear thesis, or contain significant grammatical errors. Readers are instructed to consider an essay's overall quality rather than focusing on isolated issues.
