Horacio Quirog The Dead Man
Horacio Quiroga, the author of the short story, The Dead Man was considered to be the originator
of the style of writing called Criollismo in Latin America. This style of writing is often compared
to American literary regionalism, and was most used during the 19th and 20th century. Most of
Horacio s stories deal with the viciousness of the tropical nature in Latin America, which is a
common theme among the Criollismo style of writing ( Quiroga). The Dead Man is no exception,
as the story details a man clearing out his banana grove, ultimately falling onto his machete and
dying. This story is significant because the author describes a man s horrible death in a practical,
ironic way that portrays his death as insignificant. This short story takes place during the man s
final thirty minutes of life. Time in this story advances incredibly slow, as the phrases not even two
seconds have elapsed, the shadows have not advanced one millimeter, two minutes went by, are
used throughout. During these thirty minutes, the man is disconcerted to the... Show more content

He takes great pride in his work and possessions, but in the end, they kill him. Quiroga does not
glorify the man; as his banana grove becomes his final resting place. Human life and effort are
presented as little and ephemeral, and only the land achieves permanence and grandeur. The
insignificance of the man s work can be seen through the way the author writes the story as well.
As the man is dying, he looks to his surroundings at all the work he has done over the years. He
says in thought, Everything, everything exactly as always: the burning sun, the vibrant air, the
loneliness, the motionless banana trees, the wire fence with the tall, very thick posts that will soon
have to be replaced...Dead (6). The upsetting irony of this, is that everything the man has worked
for and is proud of, is what ended up killing

A Common Motif Of Mutual Death Essay
We are all the same, no one is better no one is less. We are all struggling to survive; be kind. That
s the rhetoric my parents so heavily ingrained in my mind. I was raised to take this passive
ideology and grow my life out of well intended passivism. Same became the degradation of
different; Struggles became insignificant and rooted in the pretense that everyone faces the same
challenges. So, I went through the motions stagnant and unmoved. Racismbecame unreal,
unfathomable and unlogical. I looked at St. Louis, my home, without truly seeing the deep
existence of division the deep truth of what it really holds. Like the Van Boucle painting, a
common motif of mutual death can be seen in the life of my home town. His strokes paint dead
turkeys all vaguely touching each other, as they are set up in different positions. Some are further
away from others, but all are at least a part of a pair. Like this image, the oil spills into blood and
death touches us all; linking our existence; linking the streets of St. Louis.
Separate is not equal Brown v. Board The legacy of slavery and Jim Crow was something I never
understood or clearly saw as a child and teenager. As a young child I lived in the areas now more
associated with the racist term ghetto . My parents tell me about the influence of gangs and crime
that overcame their older neighborhoods. Then the idea of black and these neighborhoods became
subconsciously and problematically synonymous. But my nomadic

Supervisory Influence In Greek Mythology
Projective Identification. It has long been known among residents of the schools of psychological
thought, that it is a common human tendency to project characteristics of one s self onto others or
even onto inanimate objects. An example being that one day a person walks through a park and
come across a formation of trash such that the trash resembles a smiley face. The reaction that they
would exhibit is that they would see another s face when looking at this pile of garbage is an
example of identification based on basic facial features. Similarly, humans do the same to gods,
Greek or Egyptian. Desires considered to be human, and emotions such as rage, lust, and grief are
common themes in myths surrounding these gods. In fact, such myths... Show more content on

Other areas of psychology suggest that humans believe God(s) exist(s) because they are simply
used to having an entity watch over them, and because personalities desire the security and growth
found from a supervisory relationship. Often in religion there are rules that shall not be disobeyed,
or punishment that one would wish to avoid. In the Bible, one should act righteously by the
commandments, lest they risk their eternal damnation in the pits of hell. In Greek mythology, cruel
and unethical behavior may lead to the fields of punishment. And Hinduism s cycle of rebirth and
karma dictates that if one acts unrighteously within this life, they shall surely be reborn as a being
whose very existence is viewed as unpleasant, such as a barnacle. Varying takes on punishment
aside, it is clear that religion and mythology have their own views on morality and the relative
consequence of one s actions. But the fact remains that such stories exist to remind society as a
whole that it should not behave in an immoral fashion. This being the case, it could be said that
the deciding forces, Karma, God, and gods exist to supervise people, much as a parent or teacher
would. Such myths and religious ideals exist to prevent conflict, and regardless of religious conflict
in the world today, ideas such as the Ten Commandments remind humanity as a whole that the true
aim of religion was truly to discourage conflict and encourage harmony. Have respect for life. The
commandment You shall not kill means an obligation for a culture of non violence. (Kässmann, M.

Enterprise is a commercial real estate developer. You recently joined Melon and your position

Pat tells you that Melon is thinking about leasing a parcel of land to build a shopping center.
Melon would own and operate the shopping center and generate revenue by renting space to
retailers. Pat would like you to do some work on the project. Specifically, she would like you to

Bob thought that the parcel of land would be large enough to build a shopping center with as
much as 60,000 square meters of retail space. He also thought that Melon should make a one time
upfront payment to lease the parcel of land for the expected 20 year life of the project.
Bob thought the amount retailers in the shopping center would be willing to pay per square
meter of floor space would be a decreasing function of the total size of the shopping center. Bob
did some initial work estimating the likely relationship between what tenants would be willing
to pay for retail space and the size of the shopping center. Specifically, he thought there was a
50% chance the true relationship would be: r = 60 0.001s and a 50% chance that the true
relationship would be r = 50 0.001s where r is the rental rate per square meter of floor space and s
is the total size of the shopping center in square meters. Furthermore, Bob was going to assume that
once the shopping center had been built, the realized relationship between r and s would remain
unchanged for the next 20 years.
Bob was planning to ignore discount rates and the time value of money in his initial evaluation of
the project. He was going to treat all of the project s costs and benefits equally no matter when they
occurred in the life of the project; that is, he was going to treat a $1 cost incurred (or

Death like life is an inevitable occurrence in the human...
Death like life is an inevitable occurrence in the human experience and according to Sigmund
Freud, Although we know that after such a loss the acute state of mourning will subside, we also
know we shall remain inconsolable and will never find a substitute . Hence, the management of the
effects of deathbecomes necessary to the healing of the human spirit as one tries to cope with the
extensive loss and pain associated with losing a loved one. Freud further stated that this gap
result in the only way of perpetuating love which we do not want to let go of. This gap ,
according to Freud, has a great impact on the psychological and spiritual well being of human
beings and as such the study of Sudden Death is essential to the modern... Show more content on

They breach the attachments of family, friendship, love, and community; shatter the construction of
the self that is formed and sustained in relation to others; undermine the belief systems that give
meaning to human experience; and violate the victim s faith in a natural or divine order and cast
the victim into a state of existential crisis (Herman, 1992, p.51).
Within this context, sudden deaths are more likely to involve domestic violence, accidents,
mutilation, stirring the worst imaginations in the bereaved. In some circumstances, the survivor
cannot see the body, thus adding to the problem of failing to accept the finality of the loss.
Losing a loved one suddenly in a tragic event is hard and hence there is no escaping one s sense of
pain and loss if a return to normal life is going to occur.
Following a sudden or violent death, other stressful and traumatic events may occur. These include
the sight of the injured or maimed body, the arrival of the police and/or medical personnel, efforts to
assist the injured, the grief reactions of other witnesses, and the survivor s separation from the love
one body. These secondary traumas are encoded as intrusive memories that interfere with the
survivor s ability to mourn, because the survivor cannot remember the parent without also

Challenges Of Life During The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was a period of time when thousands of people from all over the world
came to California for gold, some were lucky, most were not. California was owned by Mexico
1600 1846. Mexico soon allowed the U.S. to have California as it s own state, and that is when
they found the gold. The California Gold Rushwas a difficult time with the challenges people faced
traveling to California, the way the Forty Niners lived, and the way they used the gold. Thousands
of men and women would bunk on a boat for up to almost a year. When traveling to California,
the men and women on board had to live several months eating old and moldy food, this caused
many to die or become ill. The unhealthy voyage was also very dangerous, they had to go through
many storms, some could even lead to a ship sinking or a person getting thrown overboard. The
author stated The trip around Cape Horn was a dangerous as well as unpleasant. Ferocious rains
and freezing gales buffeted the vessels, pushing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

to the thieves, especially the Chinese. The Chinese were robbed and harassed the most. Most of
of thieves were other foreigners, mostly the Native Americans because they were mad at the
fact that they took their land. The California Gold Rush caused economic changes. A quote to
justify is Merchants charged higher prices for supplies as people began to stream into
California. Money was more available than food. Price increases affected everything from eggs
to software. (McGill, 1 2). Many during the California Gold Rush had to leave behind their
family behind so they could travel and get to California without a hassle. They would leave so
fast because they believed that the gold would be gone by the time they got there. The California
Gold Rush was not only dangerous but also risky for those who left their family

Brief Summary Of Rankin s House
After a pleasant spring trip to Toronto visiting friends, Mary with Hyacinthe returned home just
in time. The youngest member of the family, 2 year old Doris Thelma (b December 15, 1908)
developed a painful abscess on the neck in May 1910 and it had to be operated on quickly.
Luckily it all went well. However, less than two weeks later, 15 year old Beatrice had an
accident while going out to get the mail for her father s store when her horse, in wanting to run
away, threw her out of the wagon fracturing her leg. At her youthful age, it wasn t long before she
was back on her feet. Nineteen ten included the first of Philip and Mary s children to have a
wedding. Pearl at 22 was marrying James White, the celebration of which took place in the

With such success the family purchased, in the spring of 1921 their first car. Once Hyacinthe

Louise Erdrich s Tracks Essay example
Louise Erdrich s Tracks
In Louise Erdrich s Tracks ;, the readers discovers by the second chapter that there are two
narrators, Nanapush and Pauline Puyat. This method of having two narrators telling their stories
alternately could be at first confusing, especially if the readers hasn t been briefed about it or hasn
t read a synopsis of it. Traditionally, there is one narrator in the story, but Erdrichdoes an effective
and spectacular job in combining Nanapush and Pauline s stories. It is so well written that one
might question as he or she reads who is the principal character in this story? Being that there are
two narrators, is it Nanapush, the first narrator, him being a participant in the story, who tells his
story in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The unsuspecting lumbermen frightened by the mysterious falling of the trees around them while
Fleur smiles on knowing that she is the catalyst of the falling trees.
With the importance of Fleur throughout Tracks ;, she can be symbolized as being the nucleus
of an atom. Fleur, being the nucleus while the two narrators are like protons and electrons
orbiting around Fleur. Without the nucleus of an atom, there wouldn t be an atom; just as if there
were no Fleur, the two narrators wouldn t have someone to focus on. On the other hand, if the
atom were missing some electrons or protons, there would be an imbalance, but there would still
be some form of an atom. In other words, each narrator s story can be considered a separate entity.
It might not be as complete if the two stories were together, but because each story has a subject, a
motivation and a conclusion. It can survive on its own. But, because of Fleur s importance in both
stories, she cannot be excluded from either story without afflicting it detrimentally. If we relate this
to the novel and eliminate Pauline and her story, we still have Nanapush telling the history of Fleur
and the Chippewa s to Lulu. However, what is the significance of Nanapush telling Lulu about the
history of both her tribe and her mother?
The reasons are two fold. First, to reunite Lulu and her mother, Fleur. It seems that right from the
beginning, Nanapush tells Lulu, Fleur, the

Density Measurement Lab
Procedure In this lab, there was six specimens including three metals, steel, aluminum, brass, and
three polymers, PVC, Nylon and polyethylene. Each of these six specimens was going to be tested
its hardness and conductivity and measured its density.
Density Measurement
There was two methods to measure the density of materials. First method was to calculate the
volume of the specimens in mathematical way. First dividing the specimen into three parts as
shown in Figure 1.

Then using caliper to measure the length, width and height of those three rectangular parts. After

However, the natures between the two are quite different. Covalent bonds are formed by nonmetal
and nonmetal. Electrons in the covalent bond are shared and no atom wants to leave the other
adjacent atom because they all want to be stable. Thus, the covalent bond between atoms is very
strong. However, there is van der Waals bond between two molecules. Van der Waals bond is the
basis of chemical bonding and is weaker than all the primary bonds. Van der Waals bond has
weaken a material such as polymers because the attraction force between molecules is not strong.
However, for metallic bonding, metal ions are bonded with metal ions. The bonding connection
between the two is always to be metallic bond. Hence, when comparing materials containing
covalent and metallic bonds generally, it is easier to find out that materials which are made of
metal are relatively stronger than materials made of polymers. Furthermore, due to the
directionality of covalent bond, it restricts electrons to travel freely, so molecules of covalent bond
are not able to conduct electricity like metallic bond which has a travelled electric current.
The major differences of these two chemical bonds are shown obviously in the lab. Metals has
larger density values, higher hardness than polymers and able to conduct electricity while polymers
is not able to. To understand the distinction in atomic bonding, one can utilize the knowledge in his

David Brooks The Humanist Vocation Analysis
In an article entitled The Humanist Vocation , which appeared in the New York Times, David
Brooks, a well known columnist, and an op ed editor for the New York Times, claims that the
decline in numbers of humanities graduates is due to the humanists loss of interest and faith in
their mission, supporting his claims with lines from a note written by one of the history teachers
of the University of Chicago back when he himself was a freshman. Brooks is definitely right
when he tries to link this decrease in humanities majors, however, he does not fully succeed in
tackling the real issue behind the drastic change.
According to Brooks, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, the matter goes beyond that reason. Why would someone choose a major that only focuses
on conceptual ideas, and is not required in the job market unless it is for teaching the
humanities? It seems like a never ending loop. One person can give a lecture to a hundred
people, but not each one of them will be able to teach another hundred. While other majors that
are demanded in the market are more vast and broad. An engineer can work in a company, on
their own inventions, and even teach subjects related to their majors for instance. Brooks needed
to see the matter from a realistic point of view, since the reason is, after all, economic in the first
place. When he argues that a 19 years old freshman will see the humanities as a boring and useless
major, he forgets or misses to mention, that people go to universities to prepare themselves for the
job market. And there is no point of going to the market with a certificate that will lead them
nowhere. With that being said, Brooks also insists on quoting a history teacher, transmitting to the
reader his own perspective of the reason he thinks is causing the

Anger In King Lear
Anger is a common theme in literature that shapes and molds characters into who they are. The
extent and range of how far anger can be varies from story to story. In William Shakespeares King
Lear, anger goes to a far extent. This can be seen through Edmund s self pity and anger towards
Gloucester and Edgar. His angerresults him into manipulation and vengence. Goneril and Regan s
anger is violent and causes them to lash out at anyone who crosses them. King Lears anger causes
him to be hasty and excessively abrasive. In William Shakespeares King Lear, the excessive
amount and extent of anger is shown through Edmund s manipulation to his father and Edgar,
Goneril and Regans violence and King Lear s hastiness.

Goneril to be angry as the knights are quite rambunctious and harrass female servants. But,

man hath had good counsel. A hundred knights! Tis politic and safe to let him keep at point a

may enguard his dotage with their powers and hold our lives in mercy. Oswald, I say! (1.4.340

heartlessly throws out her father and his knights leaving them stranded. Their anger goes to an
even higher extreme when Regan and Cornwall torture and pluck Gloucesters eyeballs out for
helping King Lear. See t shalt thou never. Fellows, hold the chair. Upon these eyes of thine I ll set

Introduction
This experiment was about identifying the unknown microorganism given by the instructor. This
exercise is important to understand and apply all previous laboratory practices, as well as those
learned in our first unknown exercise, for identifying the given unknown organism. With the
knowledge and practice of performing biochemical and physiological identifying tests, I was able to
determine the unknown bacteria. For this experiment, I was given Unknown #12 and used a series
of tests to determine the specimen, further explained in this report.
Materials and Methods
For the Gram stain, I used a microscope slide, wash bottle of water, clothespin, and the reagents
crystal violet, Gram s iodine, ethyl alcohol, and safranin to observe whether the organism was
Gram negative or positve. The method was placing and heat fixing a loopful of the unknown
organism on the slide. The organisms were then stained with crystal violet for a minute, rinsed
off, flooded with iodine for a minute, rinsed off, decolorized with alcohol for 30 seconds, and
then finally stained with the counter stain, safranin, for a minute. I streaked the unknown onto a
TSA plate and incubated at 35 C. With a pure colony, we performed a second gram stain
procedure and inoculated it into a TSA slant. I used BCP Lactose broth and a loop to perform a
BCP Lactose test. The broth was inoculated with a loopful of the unknown and incubated

Responses To Sexual Rejection
There isn t a lot of research done on where the origins of sexual rejection stem form. Women are
not usually seen as the ones making the advances like men are. Responses to sexual rejection are
different for men and women. A sample of 67 men and 65 women completed a questionnaire filled
with hypothetical situations where sexual rejection occurs.
Purpose of Research:
The aim of the study was to discover if responses to sexual rejection varied by gender; how do
positive emotions to sexual rejection occur and how do they balance with negative emotions; how
are these responses explained? Understanding responses to sexual rejection can help stop them from
escalating into lasting negative states such as low self esteem, depression, uncontrolled ... Show

These guideline include defining: who s involved, planned behavior, and how to perceive and
inform others of what is expected. Violations of these guideline illicit many negative responses but
can also create positive ones. The sexual scripts that men and women have are not the same because
of how they attach meanings to different situations, this is why their responses to sexual rejection
vary.
Women were found to be more sensitive to sexual rejection than men. In 1992 three researchers
(Metts, Cupach, and Imahori) found that women felt more uncomfortable and would hold back
from future sexual advances because of sexual rejection. Then a year later, in 1993 a different team
of researchers (Baumeister, Wotman, and Stillwell), discovered that women tend to experience
unrequited love as more painful than men did. Women feel sexual rejection on a more emotional
level so it affects them later on when they want to make another sexual advance.
The nature between the persons involved also has an effect on the emotional reactions to rejection.
When there is mutual sexual interest the response to sexual rejection will be completely different
than that of someone you just met. Whether sexual intercourse previously took place complicates
how someone would react to sexual

Financial Crisis Across The World Since Currency Essay
There has been a financial crisis across the world since currency came about. It started with the
barter system which allowed people to trade goods and services, but this sometimes proved to be
more difficult than beneficial. Then around 600 B.C., coins and currency came about. Since then
currency went from being precious metals to paper money. With the development of currency,
came international trade. Banks and the ruling classes started buying currencies from other
nations and created the first currency market. The stability of a particular monarchy or
government affected the value of the country s currency and the ability for that country to trade
on an increasingly international market. The competition between countries often led to
currency wars, where competing countries would try to affect the value of the competitor s
currency by driving it up and making the enemy s goods too expensive, by driving it down and
reducing the enemy s buying power (and ability to pay for a war), or by eliminating the currency
completely (Beattie, 2007). Money gets its value by being a medium of exchange, a unit of
measurement and a storehouse for wealth. Money allows people to trade goods and services
indirectly and understand the price of goods. We can see the evidence of financial crisisthroughout
time with the credit crisis of 2007 2008 and the Russian Crisis of 1998 and its global impact.
Although Russia was experiencing economic growth in 1997 ...the country s fixed

Similarities Between Proctor And Gamble And Unilever
Proctor and Gamble vs. Unilever Over the past decades creating corporate social responsibility has
become very important to companies in order to compete in their industries. It has become obvious
to the public that corporations have so much power in society; so corporations efforts to improve
society has become a necessity to many consumers. Corporate social responsibilityis defined in our
textbook as, a business concern for society s welfare (Lamb, Hair, McDaniel 2017). When taking a
look at Proctor and Gamble and Unilever s goals to create stronger corporate social responsibilityin
society I have identified a few major similarities and differences. First we will talk about a few of
the similarities that have been identified in these company s plans. One similarityshared between
these company s plans is their focus on Gender inclusiveness. Unilever s goal is to empower 5
million women by 2020, while P G is also focusing on empowering women in many ways. One of
the ways is by promoting work for women within the firm, in India they claim to have 30% of
their plant workforce being women. Another similarity can be seen in their focus on enhancing
lives through out the world. A Forbes article about Unilever outlined that, the washing brand
Persil has helped 10m children get an education whilst cleaning bleach Domestos has helped 5m
people gain access to toilets (Feller 2016). P G has also shown is commitment to improving
lives by teaming up with Habitats for Humanity to provide shelter for low income families.
According to Habitats website, Nearly 2,000 P G employees have built, repaired or cleaned homes
with 12,000 families (Proctor and Gamble 2015). The last similarity that I have found is both
companies have set their goals for 2020 and have tracked their progress over the years. Unilever has
focused on its three main goals and have further divided these goals into 50 goals in order to track
their progress. P G has done a similar thing by creating sub goals within each of their four major
goals. Both company s track and reported yearly progress for each of these goals.
There are a few major differences between P G s and Unilever s plans. First off Unilever focus

In recent years, the Olympic Games have developed into one of the most significant mega
international sporting events (RocheпјЊ2000). More and more cities are bidding to host the
Olympics and increasingly money are invested in Olympic bids, which is due to the reason that the
government believe that they could get benefits from such an event. During the proceeding of the

Secondly, the staging of Olympics often contains build the new sporting facilities or restructure the
exiting ones. It is often claimed that those facilities have failed to produce a long term benefits to
the country; some of the sports venues often become unused after the Olympics is finished.
However, this ignores the fact that the whole society will get beneficial from infrastructural
investment and environmental improvement. The London 2012 Olympic Games have made a
dedicated plan for the usage of facilities before the facilities is built. For example, after the games,
the Olympics Village will become a new community housing. The new shopping centre, which is
separated from the Olympic Park, will become an employment centre of this area. Transportation
will get improved through the construct of new stations, line extensions and additional trains and a
largest urban park will build available for both local community and for elite athletes (Olympic
Delivery Authority, 2007).
The final reason why holding the Olympics Games have benefits for the host country is that it will
help to improve the host country s image. For the host country, it s not just a competition about
sports; it s a chance to improve their international prominence and a sense of national pride. Firstly,
it is contribute to transforming the image

Cloudstreet Character Analysis
Thrown together following two separate family tragedies, Tim Winton s Cloudstreet journeys
through the trials of the Pickles and Lamb families. In their misguided search for happiness, the
characters in Cloudstreet each engage in self destructive behavior. This fruitless search ultimately
becomes their greatest challenge. These catastrophic behaviors manifest uniquely in each character.
Whether through seeking independence, falling victim to addiction or deliberately separating
themselves from their families, Winton demonstrates how each character ultimately disconnects
themselves from their significant others in an effort to find contentment.
Cloudstreet becomes home to each of the family members, however, in a campaign for better things,

Think about the following two jokes:
1) Why aren t Jews concerned about the abortion controversy? Because they don t consider a fetus

2) Why is there no Mexican Olympics? Because everyone who can run, jump, or swim is already

The de centralization of electronic discovery (e discovery) rules (laws) brings challenges when
searching for evidence in Electronically Stored Information (ESI), both nationally and
internationally. If a litigation case covers more than one jurisdiction a lawyer will need to be
hired that knows each particular jurisdiction. The reason that a lawyer familiar with that particular
United States (US) district court, from herein referred to as districts; will need to be hired, is due
to the differences in the local rules throughout the districts. To summarize David Canfield (2012),
several states have adopted new civil procedures since the 2006 Amendments that may be
incorporated in the Federal rules for future amendments (Canfield, 2012, p.p. 1 2). District judges
play an active role in tailoring e discovery needs to individual cases (Allman, T., 2013) and the local
adoption of federal rules cause inconsistent rules throughout the country is the cause of these
differences (Allman, T., 2013). Regulations that

The Historical Context of The Bhagavad Gita and Its Relation to Indian Religious Doctrines
The Bhagavad Gita is perhaps the most famous, and definitely the most widely read, ethical text of
ancient India. As an episode in India s great epic, the Mahabharata, The Bhagavad Gita now ranks
as one of the three principal texts that define and capture the essence of Hinduism; the other two
being the Upanishads and the Brahma Sutras. Though this work contains much theology, its kernel
is ethical and its teaching is set in the context of an ethical problem. The teaching of The Bhagavad
Gita is summed up in the maxim your business is with the deed and not with the result. When

The conflict between the Pandavas and the Kauravas brewed gradually when the Kauravas
refused to return the kingdom to the Panadavas and honor the agreement after the fourteen year
exile, and escalated to a full scale war when the Kauravas refused to even grant Yudhisthir s
reduced demand for a few villages instead of the entire kingdom. As the battle is about to begin,
Arjuna, himself an acclaimed warrior, wonders how he could kill his own blood relatives with
whom he had grown up as a child. He puts the battle on hold and begins a conversation with Krishna
, one of the ten but most important incarnations of the Universal Hindu God, Vishnu. The
Bhagavad Gita begins here and ends with Krishna convincing Arjuna that in the grand scheme of
things, he is only a pawn. The best he could do is do his duty and not question God s will. It was
his duty to fight. In convincing Arjuna, the Lord Krishna provides a philosophy of life and restores
Arjuna s nerve to begin the battle a battle that had been stalled because the protagonist had lost his
nerve and needed time to reexamine his moral values.
Even though The Bhagavad Gita (hereafter referred to as the Gita) is one of the three principal
texts that define the essence of Hinduism, and since all over the world Hindus chant from the Gita
during most of their religious ceremonies, strictly speaking the Gita is not one of the Hindu
scriptures. In light

When done every day a person will learn to relax better. It can aid in controlling what a person
thinks as he sees a pattern to his thoughts and can stop negative ones.
Breathe deeply feeling the abdomen movement and concentrate on it and not the chest. Make sure
to breathe through the nose.
What is the Diaphragm?
It is a large muscle. It sits in a horizontal position crossing the bottom of the rib cage. It connects
to the front, back, and sides of the lower rib cage. It has an oval shape and turned over bowl look.

But the lower abdomen is still when someone breathes with the diaphragm. The chest breathing also
generates more stress and basically a cycle is started. This cause bodily tenseness and agitates the

The adherent to diaphragmatic breathing for deep meditation has to take the time to learn to breathe
from the diaphragm and keep the top of the chest and the bottom of the abdomen still.
Western medicine has found out that just as the yogis have known for a long time, breathing is
closely related to autonomic nervous system and a person s mind. Thus, some hospitals now teach
people deep breathing.
A person needs to be trained correctly and to practice it daily. He should practice it at least in the

One Hundred Victories by Linda Robinson
In the book, the author makes it clear that executing counterinsurgency in Afghanistan is a difficult
task for Special Forces operators. She explains that the commanding officers knew these
operations would be a challenging feat. For instance, the author details Major General Scott
Miller s efforts to expand the Afghan Local Police initiative to the rural areas of Afghanistan.
Major General Miller felt that the same approach that was taken in the cities would not work in the
rural areas. In other words, the Afghan local policemen by themselves were not sufficient to bring
peace to rural Afghanistan, and the country had to be stabilized from the village up (Robinson
2013, 26). In this instance, the book demonstrates the Generals knowledge and awareness of the
situation in the region. That is to say, the only capacities for dispute resolution and law enforcement
in much of the country consist of village or tribal councils and mullahs who administer a crude
interpretation of Sharia (Rubin 2007, 76). Both the author and the general realized the importance
villages have in securing peace in Afghanistan. These rural operations of the Afghan Local Police
are known as Village Stability Operations. These operations were not intended to be a quick fix,
rather a long term investment. The author asks the question, are the village stability operations a
success? Perhaps, the answer can be found in the results of the operations. Although stability in
Afghanistan has proved to be an

Epa s Field Measurement Results
EPA s field measurement results were similar in each of the sample locations. EPA evaluated the
MARN s sampling procedures and equipment available to perform in situ measurements. The
following observations were made: Samples collected by MARN inspectors were preserved with
ice. The refrigeration of samples is a requirement for most of the parameters, but it is the only
preservative required for total suspended solids, BOD5, and color. Other analyses require additional
preservatives (e.g., nitric acid, sulfuric acid, etc.). The MARN Sampling Operating Procedure stated
that they are using as reference the Standards Methods for the Examination of Water and
Wastewater document to collect and analyze the samples. The MARN sampling operating... Show

The meter measures pH, specific conductance, and temperature. MARN recently acquired a
dissolved oxygen probe to be used with the multi parameter meter. 4.1.1Health Safety Plan
MARN used nitrile gloves to prevent cross contamination of the samples and for personal
protection. MARN did not have a health and safety protocol in place. EPA strongly recommends
the development of a health and safety protocol for sampling procedures. 4.2Fish Kill Sampling
Evaluation The National Council for Protected Areas (CONAP) was the agency responsible for
the direction of the collection of fishes after the fish kill. It is EPA s understanding based on a
discussion with members of CONAP that there is no standard procedure for the investigation of
fish kills. The method CONAP adopted in crisis was a modification of a graduate student work
on the Pasion River studying the interactions between nutria and devilfish. It is believed that gill
nets were used to collect fish specimens from the Pasion River and specimens were preserved in
formalin and sent to the University of Florida for necropsy analyses. The methods utilized to
investigate the Pasion River kill are not sufficient to be able to produce an accurate estimate of the
number of fish killed nor determine the economic valuation of the kill. Furthermore, specimens that
have been preserved in formalin may not provide sufficient evidence of the cause of death.

The United States And The War On Terror
Over the course of United States History the country has engaged in several wars. Some of these
wars were for independence, national preservation, and national defense. Other wars were for more
dubious and obscure reasons such as stopping the spread of communism, protecting America s
interests , and the war on terror . Throughout the history of the United Statesforeign affairs another
pattern has emerged. Our propensity toward military action has also had the unintended
consequence of fostering an atmosphere of distrust, anger, and resentment that nurtures potential
enemies. This begs the question; does the United States create its own future enemies? If this is the
case, what can we do to stop this? From the ashes of World War

These proxy wars over time became highly unpopular when the American public became aware of
the great human cost of these proxy wars as well as a general distrust of the American government
s reasons for engaging in these wars. While the United States set to expand its influence globally
and participated in conflict, wars, and military interventions an unintended consequence came to the
fore, destabilization of the regions of conflict. After the 1989 collapse of the Soviet Union the
United States turned its attention toward the Middle East. The United States had previous dealing

the United States in the Middle East and bolstered Iran0, major military presence in the region

annexed Kuwait in 1990 the United States along with a coalition of nations engaged in war with
Iraq. Although the war resulted in defeat of the Iraqi army, public image of the United States in the
region continued to deteriorate. Due to the United States support of the formation of Israel and our

Theme Of Nihilism In The Stranger
Introduction:Albert Camus was a French novelist, essayist, dramatist regarded as one of the finest
philosophical writers of modern France. He earned a worldwide reputation as a novelist and
essayist and won the Nobel Prize for literature. He became the leading moral voice of his generation
during the 1950 s. One of the greatest modern writers, he expresses the moral concerns of 20th
century. His writings describe the contemporary feeling that life has no ultimate meaning beyond
immediate experience and explores the various philosophical schools of thought such as absurdism,
nihilismand existentialism. In this paper, we trace the evolution of the protagonist Meursault as a
nihilist in Albert CamusThe Stranger.

Moral nihilism, also known as ethical nihilism says that no action is necessarily preferable to
any other. A moral nihilist would say that killing someone for whatever reason is not inherently
wrong or right. Meursault has the same idea. He senselessly murders his friend s enemy and
when asked whether he regrets the action, he merely replies that he felt annoyed. He does not
find his action to be wrong instead he shows an attitude that people do not matter dead or alive
and that even a cold blooded murder is free from the shackles of wrong or right. In the possession
of his friends revolver, Meursault is suddenly afflicted by the physically unbearable weather. The
searing sun and bright sand cause a burning sweat in his eyes. At the moment of utmost vexation
the Arab reveals a knife whose glaring shine in Meursault s face prompts him to pull the trigger and
shatter the harmony of the day. With the Arab dead, Meursault indifferently fires four more rounds
at the motionless body, which he describes as knocking four quick times on the door of unhappiness

Rhetorical Analysis Of Once More To The Lake
In the text Once More to the Lake author E.B. White focuses on appealing to fathers or even
possibly parents in general. The text is eloquently written to ultimately reiterate that change is
constant and at some point in life all people will eventually die. His primary goal of this text is to
enjoy the moments in one s life before life is over. A nostalgic tone is used throughout when
comparing his childhood memories to the current memories he is making with his own son. White
is effective in illustrating his purpose by using techniques such as logos, ethos, pathos, and imagery
to encourage his audienceto be aware that their own lives are inevitably growing older each day. In
order to gain attention and credibility from the intended... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He refers multiple times to fishing terms that the general audience may not be knowledgeable of
such as spinner ( Once para. 1), hellgrammite ( Once para. 5), and bass ( Once para. 5). These
terms not only classify White as a fisherman but also suggest the importance or impact that fishing
and the lake have on his life. By using logos in his writing, he gains credibility with his intended
audience. Although ethos and logos are important modes as well, this text is most effective due
to White s continuous use of pathos. His thesis statement suggests the urge to return to his
childhood memories, ...this feeling got so strong I bought myself a couple of bass hooks and a
spinner and returned to the lake where we used to go, for a week s fishing and to re visit old
haunts ( Once para. 1).The audience is also evoked with anticipation to what will happen later. A
good example of this is I took along my son, who had never had any fresh water up his nose and
who had seen lily pads only from train windows ( Once para. 2). The audience is left asking how
the trip with his son will compare to his own memories. White goes on to describe in intricate
detail his memory of the lake, cabins, and scenery. He uses visual imagery to allow the audience to
place themselves in the setting he has described. White wants to emphasize the permanence of
some things, or at least the memory of some things, despite the continual change that happens in the

John F Kennedy s Assassination
On the tragic day of November 22nd, 1963, John Fitzgerald Kennedy s assassination, America

youngest president to this day of the United States was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, other
conspiracies say that the CIA, Lyndon B. Johnsonor the Mafia could have done it too.

Connecticut. In an election year in which Republicans gained control of both Houses of
Congress; Kennedy nevertheless won a narrow victory, giving him considerable clout within the
Democratic Party. According to one of his aides, the decisive factor in Kennedy s victory was his
personality. Shortly after his election, Kennedy met a beautiful young woman named Jacqueline
Bouvier at a dinner party and, in his own words, leaned across the asparagus and asked her for a
date. They were married on September 12, 1953. Jack and Jackie Kennedy had three children:
Caroline Kennedy, John F. KennedyJr. and Patrick Kennedy.
John Kennedy s Presidency
John Kennedy became the youngest man to be elected as the U.S president. On November 8,
1960, he narrowly beat Richard Nixon, who was the vice president to become the 35th U.S
president. John Kennedy chose Lyndon Johnson, who was the Senate majority leader as his running
mate, and later on to become the vice president. During his inauguration on January 20, 1961, John
Kennedy inspired Americans to become active citizen members by stating, Ask what not your

Analysis Of AinT No Rest For The Wicked
Ain t No Rest for the Wicked is a song by Cage the Elephant, and released as a single on June 16,
2008, but released in 2009 on the album Cage the Elephant . This song was written in the middle
of the Great Recession of 2007 2009 in the United States and is heavily influenced by the
economic issues during that time period. Matthew Schultz, a member of the band, told an
interviewer about how he came up with the song and what inspired him to write it. Schultz
explained how he was working in construction at the time he wrote the song, and how he asked a
drug dealer why he did not stop doing drugs and selling them, to which he replied, There ain t no
rest for the wicked ( Cage the Elephant ) and that he has to work without rest in order to earn
money, even if it meant that he could be arrested. Ain t No Rest for the Wicked is a first person
narrative and has a motif of events that reference Marxist criticism because it focuses on the
idea that society is greatly impacted by the state of the economy and that people are willing to
commit immoral acts to make a living. In the first verse of Ain t No Rest for the Wicked , a
scene is set where the narrator is walking down the street when he is confronted by a prostitute
who offers her services to him if he pay[s] the right price (Cage the Elephant, line 10). When asked
why she is selling her body to complete strangers, the prostitute explains how Money

This is the primary business segment of UPS. It has positioned itself to be the leader in U.S.
domestic operation of this segment. This segment of the industry is fairly concentrated in
global level as well as in the domestic level in the U.S. Top 3 large companies make over 43% of
global market share. This is mostly due to the competitive requirements such as large capital,
complex and integrated network, expertise, and technology. These factors are very difficult to
bring together in a short time horizon. This also creates entry and exit barrier into this industry.
The followings are some of the key players of this industry segment. UPS: In 2014, UPS had a
22% of global market share in Time Definite International Shipments , and 52% of market share in
U.S. domestic package delivery segment. FedEx: FedEx is the closest competitor of UPS in terms
of their similarity in operational style, service offerings (also include freight and logistics service),
target customers, and to some extent prices. FedEx also serves all 220 countries and territories that
UPS serves which intensify their rivalry for market share, first mover status, most profitable
customers, most suitable partners, and other arrangement with the country specific regulatory

The Importance Of Family Relationships In Rocket Boys
Family is the most important thing a person has which is why family relationships a number one
in keeping a family together and happy. To have a strong family you need to have respect, not
pick favorites, treat everyone the way you want to be treated. Family is all you have in the long
run and they will always be there when maybe you do not think they will but they always have
you back. Just like in Rocket Boys the dad was very tough and sometimes things were not always
perfect the the Hickman Family.
Homer Sr began to pick sides very early in the book because he was more proud of his son Jim
being an all star football player where as Homer Jr was a nerd who wanted to build a rocket.
Homer Sr would pay a lot more attention to Jim which made Jr very sad and upset and he started
disliking his father early on because of that. It started tearing the family about because he would
not like his dad because he would pick sides but he would also not like his brother because he was
getting all of the attention and Jr was very jealous about that.
To get out of here, you ve got to show your dad you re smarter than he thinks. I believe you can
build a rocket. He doesn t. I want you to show him I m right and he s wrong. Is that too much to
ask? This quote was a conversation between Homer Jr and his mother Elise and at the beginning of
the quote is talks about To get out of here which shows he wants to leave and go somewhere else
and a cause would be because a poor relationship with

The idea of repurchasing shares was no stranger to Bill Marriott by January 1980. Almost five
million shares of common stock had been repurchased on the open market by Marriott
Corporation during 1979 at a total cost of $74 million and an average price of $15.16 in the belief
that they were undervalued a belief that still was not fully reflected in the market price. At $19 5/8,
the stock was selling at only six times cash flow per share; and its price/earnings ratio of nine was a
far cry from historical multiples as high as fifty times as recently as 1973. Its low price seemed to

Gender Stereotypes In Australia
It can be argued that it is the students and academic teaching staff themselves who are forcing
females into female type jobs and males into male type jobs . Connell et al. (2013) discuss gender
cannot be argued against as being irrelevant to educational outcomes and student performance. A
significant factor in Australia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was the expansion of
education on a massive scale, with the result being a school conceiving social class (Connell et al.
2013, p.106).
Kimball (1995) relates working concepts of meritocracy are closely linked to science. Science is
believed to be true and objective, a more meritorious type of knowledge that has accurate ideas,
methodologies and people. Science automatically assumes that it is elevated above other forms of
knowledge, becoming apparent in scientists one way method of communication, with an attitude
that there is nothing to be gained by communicating with a non scientific person (Kimball, 1995,
p.141).

There is empirical evidence to show that males do not like females to be clever in areas considered
male. They think there is something strange about females who want to be scientists. (Fensham

to teacher interactions but due to the behaviour of the schoolchildren themselves. This then
reinforces the argument students themselves are forcing themselves into gender roles. Tobin (cited
in Kahle 2005) states there is hidden invisibility of masculinity and dominance in science, in the
masculine verbal bravado present and evident in science classrooms. By contrast, females lack

Analysis Of Michael Jackson s The Rock Band Nirvana s...
In 1992, Michael Jackson s Dangerous fell from the number one spot on the Billboard music
charts, replaced by grunge rock band Nirvana s sophomore album, Nevermind, bringing alternative
rock to mainstream and commercial success. Nirvana had started out in Seattle s underground
music scene and consisted of lead singer and songwriter Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and
drummer Dave Grohl. Their sound was a subgenre of alternative rockknown as grunge, a
combination of punk rock and heavy metal characterized by heavy feedback and nihilistic lyrics.
Their first album, Bleach, was released under independent label Sub pop and found moderate
success in the underground punk scene, but it was not until they were bought out by major label
DCG Records that Nirvanawas able to reach commercial success. This was significant for two
reasons; one, it introduced a completely different sound of music to the mainstream audience and
two, the songs were written by and represented Generation X. For these very reasons, Nevermind
was able to reach the top of the music charts. Before Nevermind, mainstream music was largely
controlled by old, baby boomer (those born after World War II to about 1965) music executives.
This resulted in music that Generation X (those that were born after the baby boomers) could not
relate to. Not only was Nevermind written by Generation Xers, it also perfectly captured the
feelings of Generation X: angry disillusionment with older generations. In addition,

  • 2. Horacio Quirog The Dead Man Horacio Quiroga, the author of the short story, The Dead Man was considered to be the originator of the style of writing called Criollismo in Latin America. This style of writing is often compared to American literary regionalism, and was most used during the 19th and 20th century. Most of Horacio s stories deal with the viciousness of the tropical nature in Latin America, which is a common theme among the Criollismo style of writing ( Quiroga). The Dead Man is no exception, as the story details a man clearing out his banana grove, ultimately falling onto his machete and dying. This story is significant because the author describes a man s horrible death in a practical, ironic way that portrays his death as insignificant. This short story takes place during the man s final thirty minutes of life. Time in this story advances incredibly slow, as the phrases not even two seconds have elapsed, the shadows have not advanced one millimeter, two minutes went by, are used throughout. During these thirty minutes, the man is disconcerted to the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He takes great pride in his work and possessions, but in the end, they kill him. Quiroga does not glorify the man; as his banana grove becomes his final resting place. Human life and effort are presented as little and ephemeral, and only the land achieves permanence and grandeur. The insignificance of the man s work can be seen through the way the author writes the story as well. As the man is dying, he looks to his surroundings at all the work he has done over the years. He says in thought, Everything, everything exactly as always: the burning sun, the vibrant air, the loneliness, the motionless banana trees, the wire fence with the tall, very thick posts that will soon have to be replaced...Dead (6). The upsetting irony of this, is that everything the man has worked for and is proud of, is what ended up killing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Common Motif Of Mutual Death Essay We are all the same, no one is better no one is less. We are all struggling to survive; be kind. That s the rhetoric my parents so heavily ingrained in my mind. I was raised to take this passive ideology and grow my life out of well intended passivism. Same became the degradation of different; Struggles became insignificant and rooted in the pretense that everyone faces the same challenges. So, I went through the motions stagnant and unmoved. Racismbecame unreal, unfathomable and unlogical. I looked at St. Louis, my home, without truly seeing the deep existence of division the deep truth of what it really holds. Like the Van Boucle painting, a common motif of mutual death can be seen in the life of my home town. His strokes paint dead turkeys all vaguely touching each other, as they are set up in different positions. Some are further away from others, but all are at least a part of a pair. Like this image, the oil spills into blood and death touches us all; linking our existence; linking the streets of St. Louis. Separate is not equal Brown v. Board The legacy of slavery and Jim Crow was something I never understood or clearly saw as a child and teenager. As a young child I lived in the areas now more associated with the racist term ghetto . My parents tell me about the influence of gangs and crime that overcame their older neighborhoods. Then the idea of black and these neighborhoods became subconsciously and problematically synonymous. But my nomadic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Supervisory Influence In Greek Mythology Projective Identification. It has long been known among residents of the schools of psychological thought, that it is a common human tendency to project characteristics of one s self onto others or even onto inanimate objects. An example being that one day a person walks through a park and come across a formation of trash such that the trash resembles a smiley face. The reaction that they would exhibit is that they would see another s face when looking at this pile of garbage is an example of identification based on basic facial features. Similarly, humans do the same to gods, Greek or Egyptian. Desires considered to be human, and emotions such as rage, lust, and grief are common themes in myths surrounding these gods. In fact, such myths... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other areas of psychology suggest that humans believe God(s) exist(s) because they are simply used to having an entity watch over them, and because personalities desire the security and growth found from a supervisory relationship. Often in religion there are rules that shall not be disobeyed, or punishment that one would wish to avoid. In the Bible, one should act righteously by the commandments, lest they risk their eternal damnation in the pits of hell. In Greek mythology, cruel and unethical behavior may lead to the fields of punishment. And Hinduism s cycle of rebirth and karma dictates that if one acts unrighteously within this life, they shall surely be reborn as a being whose very existence is viewed as unpleasant, such as a barnacle. Varying takes on punishment aside, it is clear that religion and mythology have their own views on morality and the relative consequence of one s actions. But the fact remains that such stories exist to remind society as a whole that it should not behave in an immoral fashion. This being the case, it could be said that the deciding forces, Karma, God, and gods exist to supervise people, much as a parent or teacher would. Such myths and religious ideals exist to prevent conflict, and regardless of religious conflict in the world today, ideas such as the Ten Commandments remind humanity as a whole that the true aim of religion was truly to discourage conflict and encourage harmony. Have respect for life. The commandment You shall not kill means an obligation for a culture of non violence. (KГ¤ssmann, M. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Eco Assignment – Melon Enterprise Essay ECO Assignment Melon Enterprise Click Link Below To Buy: http://hwaid.com/shop/eco assignment melon enterprise/ Melon Enterprise is a commercial real estate developer. You recently joined Melon and your position reports directly to Pat Smith, the CEO. When you meet Pat for the first time, she asks you to work on a project that has to be completed in about a week. Pat tells you that Melon is thinking about leasing a parcel of land to build a shopping center. Melon would own and operate the shopping center and generate revenue by renting space to retailers. Pat would like you to do some work on the project. Specifically, she would like you to complete the following tasks: 1. Determine the optimal size of the shopping center ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bob thought that the parcel of land would be large enough to build a shopping center with as much as 60,000 square meters of retail space. He also thought that Melon should make a one time upfront payment to lease the parcel of land for the expected 20 year life of the project. Bob thought the amount retailers in the shopping center would be willing to pay per square meter of floor space would be a decreasing function of the total size of the shopping center. Bob did some initial work estimating the likely relationship between what tenants would be willing to pay for retail space and the size of the shopping center. Specifically, he thought there was a 50% chance the true relationship would be: r = 60 0.001s and a 50% chance that the true relationship would be r = 50 0.001s where r is the rental rate per square meter of floor space and s is the total size of the shopping center in square meters. Furthermore, Bob was going to assume that once the shopping center had been built, the realized relationship between r and s would remain unchanged for the next 20 years. Bob was planning to ignore discount rates and the time value of money in his initial evaluation of the project. He was going to treat all of the project s costs and benefits equally no matter when they occurred in the life of the project; that is, he was going to treat a $1 cost incurred (or revenue ... Death like life is an inevitable occurrence in the human experience and according to Sigmund Freud, Although we know that after such a loss the acute state of mourning will subside, we also know we shall remain inconsolable and will never find a substitute . Hence, the management of the effects of deathbecomes necessary to the healing of the human spirit as one tries to cope with the extensive loss and pain associated with losing a loved one. Freud further stated that this gap result in the only way of perpetuating love which we do not want to let go of. They breach the attachments of family, friendship, love, and community; shatter the construction of the self that is formed and sustained in relation to others; undermine the belief systems that give meaning to human experience; and violate the victim s faith in a natural or divine order and cast the victim into a state of existential crisis (Herman, 1992, p.51). Within this context, sudden deaths are more likely to involve domestic violence, accidents, mutilation, stirring the worst imaginations in the bereaved. In some circumstances, the survivor cannot see the body, thus adding to the problem of failing to accept the finality of the loss. Losing a loved one suddenly in a tragic event is hard and hence there is no escaping one s sense of pain and loss if a return to normal life is going to occur. Following a sudden or violent death, other stressful and traumatic events may occur. These include the sight of the injured or maimed body, the arrival of the police and/or medical personnel, efforts to assist the injured, the grief reactions of other witnesses, and the survivor s separation from the love one body. These secondary traumas are encoded as intrusive memories that interfere with the survivor s ability to mourn, because the survivor cannot remember the parent without also remembering and ... Challenges Of Life During The California Gold Rush The California Gold Rush was a period of time when thousands of people from all over the world came to California for gold, some were lucky, most were not. California was owned by Mexico 1600 1846. Mexico soon allowed the U.S. to have California as it s own state, and that is when they found the gold. The California Gold Rushwas a difficult time with the challenges people faced traveling to California, the way the Forty Niners lived, and the way they used the gold. Thousands of men and women would bunk on a boat for up to almost a year. When traveling to California, the men and women on board had to live several months eating old and moldy food, this caused many to die or become ill. The unhealthy voyage was also very dangerous, they had to go through many storms, some could even lead to a ship sinking or a person getting thrown overboard. A quote to justify is Merchants charged higher prices for supplies as people began to stream into California. Money was more available than food. The youngest member of the family, 2 year old Doris Thelma (b December 15, 1908) developed a painful abscess on the neck in May 1910 and it had to be operated on quickly. Luckily it all went well. However, less than two weeks later, 15 year old Beatrice had an accident while going out to get the mail for her father s store when her horse, in wanting to run away, threw her out of the wagon fracturing her leg. Louise Erdrich s Tracks Essay example Louise Erdrich s Tracks In Louise Erdrich s Tracks ;, the readers discovers by the second chapter that there are two narrators, Nanapush and Pauline Puyat. This method of having two narrators telling their stories alternately could be at first confusing, especially if the readers hasn t been briefed about it or hasn t read a synopsis of it. Traditionally, there is one narrator in the story, but Erdrichdoes an effective and spectacular job in combining Nanapush and Pauline s stories. It is so well written that one might question as he or she reads who is the principal character in this story? Without the nucleus of an atom, there wouldn t be an atom; just as if there were no Fleur, the two narrators wouldn t have someone to focus on. On the other hand, if the atom were missing some electrons or protons, there would be an imbalance, but there would still be some form of an atom. In other words, each narrator s story can be considered a separate entity. It might not be as complete if the two stories were together, but because each story has a subject, a motivation and a conclusion. It can survive on its own. But, because of Fleur s importance in both stories, she cannot be excluded from either story without afflicting it detrimentally. If we relate this to the novel and eliminate Pauline and her story, we still have Nanapush telling the history of Fleur and the Chippewa s to Lulu. Each of these six specimens was going to be tested its hardness and conductivity and measured its density. Density Measurement There was two methods to measure the density of materials. First method was to calculate the volume of the specimens in mathematical way. First dividing the specimen into three parts as shown in Figure 1. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the natures between the two are quite different. Covalent bonds are formed by nonmetal and nonmetal. Electrons in the covalent bond are shared and no atom wants to leave the other adjacent atom because they all want to be stable. Thus, the covalent bond between atoms is very strong. However, there is van der Waals bond between two molecules. Van der Waals bond is the basis of chemical bonding and is weaker than all the primary bonds. Van der Waals bond has weaken a material such as polymers because the attraction force between molecules is not strong. However, for metallic bonding, metal ions are bonded with metal ions. The bonding connection between the two is always to be metallic bond. Hence, when comparing materials containing covalent and metallic bonds generally, it is easier to find out that materials which are made of metal are relatively stronger than materials made of polymers. Furthermore, due to the directionality of covalent bond, it restricts electrons to travel freely, so molecules of covalent bond are not able to conduct electricity like metallic bond which has a travelled electric current. David Brooks The Humanist Vocation Analysis In an article entitled The Humanist Vocation , which appeared in the New York Times, David Brooks, a well known columnist, and an op ed editor for the New York Times, claims that the decline in numbers of humanities graduates is due to the humanists loss of interest and faith in their mission, supporting his claims with lines from a note written by one of the history teachers of the University of Chicago back when he himself was a freshman. Brooks is definitely right when he tries to link this decrease in humanities majors, however, he does not fully succeed in tackling the real issue behind the drastic change. According to Brooks, ... Why would someone choose a major that only focuses on conceptual ideas, and is not required in the job market unless it is for teaching the humanities? It seems like a never ending loop. One person can give a lecture to a hundred people, but not each one of them will be able to teach another hundred. While other majors that are demanded in the market are more vast and broad. An engineer can work in a company, on their own inventions, and even teach subjects related to their majors for instance. Brooks needed to see the matter from a realistic point of view, since the reason is, after all, economic in the first place. When he argues that a 19 years old freshman will see the humanities as a boring and useless major, he forgets or misses to mention, that people go to universities to prepare themselves for the job market. And there is no point of going to the market with a certificate that will lead them nowhere. This exercise is important to understand and apply all previous laboratory practices, as well as those learned in our first unknown exercise, for identifying the given unknown organism. With the knowledge and practice of performing biochemical and physiological identifying tests, I was able to determine the unknown bacteria. For this experiment, I was given Unknown #12 and used a series of tests to determine the specimen, further explained in this report. Materials and Methods For the Gram stain, I used a microscope slide, wash bottle of water, clothespin, and the reagents crystal violet, Gram s iodine, ethyl alcohol, and safranin to observe whether the organism was Gram negative or positve. The method was placing and heat fixing a loopful of the unknown organism on the slide. The organisms were then stained with crystal violet for a minute, rinsed off, flooded with iodine for a minute, rinsed off, decolorized with alcohol for 30 seconds, and then finally stained with the counter stain, safranin, for a minute. I streaked the unknown onto a TSA plate and incubated at 35 C. With a pure colony, we performed a second gram stain procedure and inoculated it into a TSA slant. Women were found to be more sensitive to sexual rejection than men. In 1992 three researchers (Metts, Cupach, and Imahori) found that women felt more uncomfortable and would hold back from future sexual advances because of sexual rejection. Then a year later, in 1993 a different team of researchers (Baumeister, Wotman, and Stillwell), discovered that women tend to experience unrequited love as more painful than men did. Women feel sexual rejection on a more emotional level so it affects them later on when they want to make another sexual advance. • 23. Financial Crisis Across The World Since Currency Essay There has been a financial crisis across the world since currency came about. It started with the barter system which allowed people to trade goods and services, but this sometimes proved to be more difficult than beneficial. Then around 600 B.C., coins and currency came about. Since then currency went from being precious metals to paper money. With the development of currency, came international trade. Banks and the ruling classes started buying currencies from other nations and created the first currency market. The stability of a particular monarchy or government affected the value of the country s currency and the ability for that country to trade on an increasingly international market. The competition between countries often led to currency wars, where competing countries would try to affect the value of the competitor s currency by driving it up and making the enemy s goods too expensive, by driving it down and reducing the enemy s buying power (and ability to pay for a war), or by eliminating the currency completely (Beattie, 2007). Money gets its value by being a medium of exchange, a unit of measurement and a storehouse for wealth. Money allows people to trade goods and services indirectly and understand the price of goods. Similarities Between Proctor And Gamble And Unilever Proctor and Gamble vs. Unilever Over the past decades creating corporate social responsibility has become very important to companies in order to compete in their industries. It has become obvious to the public that corporations have so much power in society; so corporations efforts to improve society has become a necessity to many consumers. Corporate social responsibilityis defined in our textbook as, a business concern for society s welfare (Lamb, Hair, McDaniel 2017). When taking a look at Proctor and Gamble and Unilever s goals to create stronger corporate social responsibilityin society I have identified a few major similarities and differences. First we will talk about a few of the similarities that have been identified in these company s plans. One similarityshared between these company s plans is their focus on Gender inclusiveness. Unilever s goal is to empower 5 million women by 2020, while P G is also focusing on empowering women in many ways. One of the ways is by promoting work for women within the firm, in India they claim to have 30% of their plant workforce being women. Another similarity can be seen in their focus on enhancing lives through out the world. A Forbes article about Unilever outlined that, the washing brand Persil has helped 10m children get an education whilst cleaning bleach Domestos has helped 5m people gain access to toilets (Feller 2016). P G has also shown is commitment to improving lives by teaming up with Habitats for Humanity to provide shelter for low income families. According to Habitats website, Nearly 2,000 P G employees have built, repaired or cleaned homes with 12,000 families (Proctor and Gamble 2015). The last similarity that I have found is both companies have set their goals for 2020 and have tracked their progress over the years. Unilever has focused on its three main goals and have further divided these goals into 50 goals in order to track their progress. P G has done a similar thing by creating sub goals within each of their four major goals. Both company s track and reported yearly progress for each of these goals. If a litigation case covers more than one jurisdiction a lawyer will need to be hired that knows each particular jurisdiction. The reason that a lawyer familiar with that particular United States (US) district court, from herein referred to as districts; will need to be hired, is due to the differences in the local rules throughout the districts. To summarize David Canfield (2012), several states have adopted new civil procedures since the 2006 Amendments that may be incorporated in the Federal rules for future amendments (Canfield, 2012, p.p. 1 2). District judges play an active role in tailoring e discovery needs to individual cases (Allman, T., 2013) and the local adoption of federal rules cause inconsistent rules throughout the country is the cause of these differences (Allman, T., 2013). The Historical Context of The Bhagavad Gita and Its Relation to Indian Religious Doctrines The Bhagavad Gita is perhaps the most famous, and definitely the most widely read, ethical text of ancient India. As an episode in India s great epic, the Mahabharata, The Bhagavad Gita now ranks as one of the three principal texts that define and capture the essence of Hinduism; the other two being the Upanishads and the Brahma Sutras. Though this work contains much theology, its kernel is ethical and its teaching is set in the context of an ethical problem. The teaching of The Bhagavad Gita is summed up in the maxim your business is with the deed and not with the result. When Arjuna, the third son of king Pandu (dynasty name: Pandavas) is ... As the battle is about to begin, Arjuna, himself an acclaimed warrior, wonders how he could kill his own blood relatives with whom he had grown up as a child. He puts the battle on hold and begins a conversation with Krishna , one of the ten but most important incarnations of the Universal Hindu God, Vishnu. The Bhagavad Gita begins here and ends with Krishna convincing Arjuna that in the grand scheme of things, he is only a pawn. The best he could do is do his duty and not question God s will. It was his duty to fight. In convincing Arjuna, the Lord Krishna provides a philosophy of life and restores Arjuna s nerve to begin the battle a battle that had been stalled because the protagonist had lost his nerve and needed time to reexamine his moral values. Even though The Bhagavad Gita (hereafter referred to as the Gita) is one of the three principal texts that define the essence of Hinduism, and since all over the world Hindus chant from the Gita during most of their religious ceremonies, strictly speaking the Gita is not one of the Hindu scriptures. • 40. One Hundred Victories by Linda Robinson In the book, the author makes it clear that executing counterinsurgency in Afghanistan is a difficult task for Special Forces operators. She explains that the commanding officers knew these operations would be a challenging feat. For instance, the author details Major General Scott Miller s efforts to expand the Afghan Local Police initiative to the rural areas of Afghanistan. Major General Miller felt that the same approach that was taken in the cities would not work in the rural areas. In other words, the Afghan local policemen by themselves were not sufficient to bring peace to rural Afghanistan, and the country had to be stabilized from the village up (Robinson 2013, 26). In this instance, the book demonstrates the Generals knowledge and awareness of the situation in the region. That is to say, the only capacities for dispute resolution and law enforcement in much of the country consist of village or tribal councils and mullahs who administer a crude interpretation of Sharia (Rubin 2007, 76). Both the author and the general realized the importance villages have in securing peace in Afghanistan. These rural operations of the Afghan Local Police are known as Village Stability Operations. These operations were not intended to be a quick fix, rather a long term investment. The author asks the question, are the village stability operations a success? Perhaps, the answer can be found in the results of the operations. Although stability in Afghanistan has proved to be an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
