Retention can be particularly problematic as women try to strike a balance between familial responsibilities and succeeding in the workplace. Schwalje asked the panel to reflect on five key challenges: overcoming social perceptions about occupations traditionally dominated by males, implementing female-friendly workplace policies, enabling work-life balance, developing family-friendly facilities, and articulating clear career trajectories for women.

In 2021, the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) – together with Curated Connectors, a Singapore based start-up – hosted a webinar series to discuss how innovation, start-up creation, and entrepreneurship at large are contributing to shape the post-pandemic recovery. The discussions in each episode of the webinar series brought in innovators, ‘start-uppers’, and entrepreneurs from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its Dialogue Partners as well as experts from international organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), foundations, and policymakers. This report summarises the key messages and trends that arose from the first half of the webinar series.

people in SSA will live in cities,
compared with 40 percent in 2010.
This means 800 million more people
will live in urban environments.
• By 2012, over 50 percent of all
Africans—or more than 500 million
people—will own a mobile phone.
By 2014, this portion is expected to
increase to 56 percent (more than 600
million people), giving Africa one of
the world’s highest mobile usage rates.
The 28th African Union Summit declared “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through investments in youth” as its theme, which connects the “Agenda 2063” that offers a comprehensive development vision for Africa. Regardless, African youth faces numerous challenges and opportunities in the fields of skills training, technology, entrepreneurship, agribusiness, advocacy, and political involvement. Hopes that Africa’s dramatic population bulge may create prosperity seem to have been overdone. It is time for development economists to look beyond the stylized facts to the dire realities of Africa’s frustrated youth and burgeoning informal economies. Although development economists talk about a demographic dividend for the continent of Africa, however, what the continent has now is not a ‘dividend’ but a youth population ‘bulge’.

Cities have never been more important for human well-beingand economic prosperity. Half of the world’s population livesin urban areas, while about 80 per cent of the world’s outputis produced in cities. And it is expected that the vast majorityof all new jobs will be urban. These will provide incomes tobillions and raise hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.South Africa’s situation is similar, with economic growthbeing disproportionately generated in the biggest cities, and agrowing proportion of people living in urban areas. However,only 60 per cent of the country is currently urbanised,suggesting more urbanisation is to come. If the next waveof city growth is managed well, it can accelerate economicgrowth and job creation, and improve people’s quality of life.This is what well-managed cities do: they raise incomes bymaking people more productive and creating opportunitiesthat cannot exist anywhere else. Historically, urbanisationhas been linked with industrialisation, which has bothfacilitated cities’ growth and depended on it. Cities have alsomade possible the efficient delivery of all kinds of services —energy, water, health, education, finance, logistics, media,transport, etc.
Africa will have about 500 million young people by 2030. 157 of the world’s 310 mobile money services in 2021 were in Sub-Saharan Africa. Africa had a US$495bn share of the US$767bn handled by mobile money worldwide. Mobile
phones account for about 75% of all online traffic in Africa. Africa has potential to unlock more than $3 trillion in consumer spending. In the five largest consumer markets alone—Nigeria Egypt, South Africa, Morocco,
and Algeria—the African Development Bank estimates that there will be 56 million middle-class households with disposable incomes of nearly $680 billion.
Analysis Group estimates that the Metaverse could contribute $40 billion to Sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP by 2031.
Digital Jobs Africa is an initiative that seeks to impact the lives of 1 million people in six countries in Africa by catalyzing sustainable Information and Communications Technology enabled employment opportunities for African youth who would not otherwise have an opportunity for sustainable employment.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates.
